Book Synopsis Too High, Too Far, Too Soon by : Simon Mason
Download or read book Too High, Too Far, Too Soon written by Simon Mason and published by Random House. This book was released on 2013-06-06 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Too High, Too Far, Too Soon is the humorous, tragic and searingly honest memoir of a man who survived childhood tragedy, Catholic boarding school and chronic drug addiction. Simon Mason graphically details his experience of teenage angst in a tatty seaside town before he ran away to London and then onwards to the crack-infested streets of LA. He recounts his numerous decadent adventures at Glastonbury Festival and the notoriety that came during his stint as personal chemist to the biggest bands of the '90s, before he himself descended into a helpless period of heroin addiction. After several incidents of petty crime stemming from his drug problem, Simon launched numerous failed attempts to become a bona fide rock 'n' roll star and even more failed attempts to get clean, finally being ‘rescued’ by Banksy from a stolen camper van, covered in blood in the Spanish countryside. Too High, Too Far, Too Soon is a rock 'n' roll memoir with a difference, written by a man who lived the life and attained the drug habits of the most extreme rock stars, yet whose attempts to break through to the big time always eluded him.

Download or read book Messy Connections written by Cathy Sloan and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-04-25 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines performance practices that involve people in recovery from addiction, theorising such practices as recovery-engaged. Focusing on examples of practice from a growing movement of UK-based recovery arts practitioners and performers, it highlights a unique approach to performance that infuses an understanding of lived experiences of addiction and recovery with creative practice. It offers a philosophy of being in recovery that understands lived experience, and performance practice, as a dynamic system of interrelations with the human and nonhuman elements that make up the societal settings in which recovery communities struggle to exist. It thereby frames the process of recovery, and recovery-engaged performance, as an affective ecology – a system of messy connections. Building upon ideas from posthumanist research on addiction, cultural theory on identity and new materialist interpretations of performance practice, it considers how such contemporary theory might offer additional ways of thinking and doing arts practice with people affected by addiction. The discussion highlights the distinct aesthetics, ethics and politics of this area of performance practice. This study will be of great interest to students and scholars in Applied Theatre and Critical Arts and Mental Health studies.
Book Synopsis First Days of the Year by : Hélène Cixous
Download or read book First Days of the Year written by Hélène Cixous and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An inner journey across space and time linking the "author" to other poets, this lyrical essay-poem continues Helene Cixous's rewriting of notions of boundary, self, other, and author. Cixous here interrogates the status of the author, connecting distant instances of herself with other writers who traverse genders, generations, and national boundaries. First Days of the Year is a celebration of beginnings and future possibilities, based on necessity and hope, constantly mediating writing and living, life and death. Like all of Cixous's profoundly original works, it seductively leads the reader into a new way of thinking by disrupting fixed ideas of psychic identity, subjectivity, and language.

Download or read book Stigmata written by Hélène Cixous and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-01-31 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hèléne Cixous -- author, playwright and French feminist theorist -- is a key figure in twentieth-century literary theory. Stigmata brings together her most recent essays for the first time. Acclaimed for her intricate and challenging writing style, Cixous presents a collection of texts that get away -- escaping the reader, the writers, the book. Cixous's writing pursues authors such as Stendhal, Joyce, Derrida, and Rembrandt, da Vinci, Picasso -- works that share an elusive movement in spite of striking differences. Along the way these essays explore a broad range of poetico-philosophical questions that have become characteristic of Cixous' work: * love's labours lost and found * feminine hours * autobiographies of writing * the prehistory of the work of art Stigmata goes beyond theory, becoming an extraordinary writer's testimony to our lives and times.

Book Synopsis The Distinction of Human Being by : Thomas Kruger Caplan
Download or read book The Distinction of Human Being written by Thomas Kruger Caplan and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2016-03-28 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps we are never done with thought, nor should be. If this is indeed the case, then Kant may have been right after all in supposing that folks will never lose interest in metaphysics, in thought thinking thought. But what of academics? Where would we find these days a comprehensive treatment of pure reason, of the epochs of its origins and accomplishments, that is not just another collection of interpretations of source texts in translation? This study introduces philosophy students and professionals to the logotectonic method of conception as developed by Heribert Boeder, a pupil of Martin Heidegger, which is broadly structuralist in its approach but endeavors to make evident how the principles of rationality governing the Occidental tradition of ó (logos) even those dictated by the animus of our post/modern world of thought in opposition to it are, in fact, founded upon the nature of pure reason itself, the intellect, the discipline, and the art of which can be understood as constituting a unique language containing a vocabulary of distinguished terms, a syntax that determines their ratios, and rules of inference with which these terms of principle, insight, and issue are built into trains of thought about thought, every thought. As a result, the wisdom of the Muses (Homer, Hesiod, Solon), of the Holy Spirit (the Synoptic Narratives of Mark, Luke, and Matthew, the Apostolic Letters of Paul, the Gospel of John), and of Humanity (Rousseau, Schiller, Hölderlin) can be seen to have thrice articulated, in their own terms, a moving vision of our experience with the distinction of human being, inspiring critical reflection to consider the ó as a destiny with regards to which even we, as the thinkers, the doers, and the builders of today, are still learning what it means to make a difference. The Distinction of Human Being offers contemporary thinkers, beginners as well as professionals, a comprehensive reading of the origin and the tradition of metaphysics encompassing the life and times of pure reason as it unfolds across its theoretical, practical, and poetic endeavor the last of which suggests what a philological philosophy might entail and demand of a new generation of friends of wisdom. ** About the Author Thomas Kruger Caplan (born 1961 in Manhattan) has lived for the past 30 years in Europe, for the most part in Germany. He studied literature theory in Paris, philosophy in Osnabrück (Germany) with Heribert Boeder ( 4 December 2013), a pupil of Martin Heidegger, attended experimental theater workshops at the Brunswick University of Fine Arts (Germany), and is currently teaching business English, philosophy, cultural history, and rhetoric at the Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences (Salzgitter, Germany).
