Book Synopsis Too Pretty to Live by : Dennis Brooks
Download or read book Too Pretty to Live written by Dennis Brooks and published by Diversion Books. This book was released on 2016-02-09 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Murder begins with the click of a button in this true crime story of Facebook, catfishing and deadly jealousy—as seen on Investigation Discovery. Chris was a CIA agent worried for the safety of Jenelle Potter. Contacting her parents and boyfriend, Chris warned them that Billy Payne and Billie Jean Hayworth were bullying Jenelle online and posed an imminent, physical threat. Something needed to be done, Chris said. And he’d have their backs if they took action to protect Jenelle. And so they did. Jenelle’s father and boyfriend murdered Payne and Hayworth in their own home—mercifully leaving the couple’s infant unharmed. But when they told their story to the police, they discovered a devastating truth: there was no Chris. It had been Jenelle the entire time, catfishing them to exact revenge over a Facebook feud. Using forensic linguistics and diving through the brambles that Jenelle laid to cover her tracks, police were able to put together a chilling portrait of a sociopath who set a double murder in motion from the shadows of the internet. Dennis Brooks, the lead prosecutor in this strange and tragic case, examines the crime and trial from all angles in Too Pretty to Live. What the police investigation turned up, though, made this crime all the more terrifying. Jenelle had been Chris the entire time, catfishing her family and her boyfriend to act in vengeance on her behalf. Using forensic linguistics and diving through the brambles that Jenelle laid to cover her tracks, police were able to put together a chilling portrait of a sociopath, made all the more ruthless by the anonymity of her online life. Bizarre and unforgettable, Dennis Brooks examines the crime and trial from all angles, bringing his expertise as the lead prosecutor in the strange and disturbing case.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What's it like to have the legal sanction to shoot and kill? This compelling and often startling book answers this, and many other questions about the oft-times violent world inhabited by our nation's police officers. Written by a cop-turned university professor who interviewed scores of officers who have shot people in the course of their duties, Into the Kill Zone presents firsthand accounts of the role that deadly force plays in American police work. This brilliantly written book tells how novice officers are trained to think about and use the power they have over life and death, explains how cops live with the awesome responsibility that comes from the barrels of their guns, reports how officers often hold their fire when they clearly could have shot, presents hair-raising accounts of what it's like to be involved in shoot-outs, and details how shooting someone affects officers who pull the trigger. From academy training to post-shooting reactions, this book tells the compelling story of the role that extreme violence plays in the lives of America's cops.

Book excerpt: Grabbing Debbys head in his two hands, he turned her so she could see the opening and he motioned for her to go in. she looked first at David and then at the new hiding place. Knowing what he was going to do, she shook her head and wrapping her arms around his waist she mouthed the word no over and over. Never before in his life, had he been rough with Debby. And after today it would never happen again, but right now he had no time to argue. Roughly pulling her arms from around his waist, holding her by her arms, he thrust her from him, then wagging his finger in front of her eyes much the same way she did when reprimanding Wolf, then pointing to the new hiding place, he mouthed the word, go! The frown he wore on his face was all the emphasis he needed to get her to move. She turned and scurried between the two rocks. His first intention had been to make a break for the sled and his rifle, but now looking everything over he could see he was trapped. The only way out, was the way they came in and the bear was in the way. Wolf was giving the bear a bad time and David knew it was only a matter of time before one of those giant paws put an end to the dog. He turned around to see if Debby was safe and when he did the flare gun bumped a rock. The noise it made attracted the attention of the bear and he seeing David, took a swipe at him with a huge paw. He couldnt reach him but the momentum of that swing carried him into the smaller of those two rocks behind which David was trying to hide. This was one mad bear now and having been pestered by Wolf for so long; he wanted to vent his anger somewhere and here was a candidate he could almost reach. David took the cord to the flare gun from around his neck and backing up against the rock that hid Debby he cocked it and holding it in his hand, waited for the inevitable.
Download or read book Kill the Messenger written by Tami Hoag and published by Bantam. This book was released on 2006-02-28 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this new thriller, The New York Times bestselling author Tami Hoag delivers her own message to suspense fans everywhere: Don't turn off the lights, and keep reading if you dare. From the gritty streets of Los Angeles to its most protected enclaves of prestige and power to the ruthless glamour of Hollywood, a killer stalks his prey. A killer so merciless no one in his way is safe—not even the innocent. At the end of a long day battling street traffic, bike messenger Jace Damon has one last drop to make. But en route to delivering a package for one of L.A.'s sleaziest defense attorneys, he's nearly run down by a car, chased through back alleys, and shot at. Only the instincts acquired while growing up on the streets of L.A. allow him to escape with his life—and with the package someone wants badly enough to kill for. Jace returns to Lenny Lowell's office only to find the cops there, the lawyer dead, and Jace himself considered the prime suspect in the savage murder. Suddenly he's on the run from both the cops and a killer, and the key to saving himself and his ten-year-old brother is the envelope he still has—which holds a message no one wants delivered: the truth. In a city fueled by money, celebrity, and sensationalism, the murder of a bottom-feeding mouthpiece like Lenny Lowell won't make the headlines. So when detectives from the LAPD's elite robbery/homicide division show up, homicide detective Kev Parker wants to know why. Parker is on the downhill slide of a once-promising career, and he doesn't want to be reminded that he used to be one of the hotshots, working cases that made instant celebrities of everyone involved. Like the case of fading retty-boy actor Rob Cole, accused of the brutal murder of his wife, Tricia Crowne-Cole, daughter of one of the most powerful men in the city, L.A.'s latest "crime of the century." Robbery/Homicide has no reason to be looking at a dead small-time scumbag lawyer or chasing a bike messenger...unless there's something in it for them. Maybe Lenny Lowell had a connection to something big enough to be killed for. Parker begins a search for answers that will lead him to a killer—or the end of his career. Because if there's one lesson he's learned over the years, it's that in a town built on fantasy and fame, delivering the truth can be deadly.
