Book excerpt: Classic stories of science fiction featuring powered armor: Tales from the Golden Age through the current era featuring military, police, and civilians utilizing powered armor. Stories by Joe Haldeman, Christopher Ruocchio, Jason Cordova, and more! MEN, MACHINES, AND TOMORROW’S BATTLEFIELDS War is planned violence . . . or, at least, it starts out that way. And even if plans go awry, the violence is indispensable. Today’s soldiers have far more firepower on a per-man basis than the doughboys of a century ago, and there is no reason to believe that this trend will not extend into the future. Imagine a revival of suits of armor, but with structural strength undreamed of by medieval knights, and powered by built-in motors, giving each soldier the invulnerability of a tank, but even more mobility, and mechanical muscle strong enough to carry light artillery, rocket launchers, laser cannon, and weapons not even on the drawing boards yet. Add on the ability to fly, or at least jump for a kilometer at a time, using rocket boosters, or even powerful leg motors, or a combination of both. The stuff that superheroes are made of, hanging in every fighting man or woman’s closet, ready to wear. If it’s possible, history teaches us, it will be done. But don’t expect a nation or planet possessing such battalions of super-powered soldiers to not worry about attack by an enemy . . . there’s no reason why the enemy won’t have its own armored infantry. Keep the midnight oil burning and the R&D rolling. In the meantime, here’s a sneak peek by expert dreamers putting the battle-hardened reader at the sharp end of tomorrow. At the publisher’s request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management). Praise for anthologies edited by Hank Davis and David Afsharirad: “This intriguing anthology explores the human race’s violent potential [but] also bends toward exploration and the triumph of the human spirit, with brave tales [that] take the reader on a fascinating, thoughtprovoking, enjoyable journey . . . ” —Publishers Weekly on The Year’s Best Military SF and Space Opera, starred review

Book excerpt: A miniatures wargame of gritty futuristic combat, Tomorrow's War projects the tactics and technology of today's military conflicts hundred's of years into the future. While robot drones, anti-gravity vehicles, and advanced battle-suit technology have changed the face of warfare, the essentials of combined-arms tactics have remained constant. Using the popular Force on Force rules as a basis, Ambush Alley Games has created the most realistic and tactically challenging science fiction wargame on the market. The rulebook includes a detailed optional 'future history' and a campaign system so that individual battles can be linked into an ongoing storyline.

Just when he thinks he has convinced her they belong together, a bolt of lightning tears her away. Or was it Joker Jake McEuen, seeking revenge? Can Zach live long enough to search until he finds her? Can she get back to tomorrow in time to save him from McEuen’s murderous rage?

Book excerpt: Thoreau once surmised that most of us lead lives of quiet desperation. Reading these stories brings Thoreau's words to mind. The characters are found in settings in the Deep South in the days of Huey Long in Louisiana; in present day New York City with its current economic hardships and other difficult goings on; and in several Mississippi locales.. The characters exist in quiet desperation. Isolated within Themselves all face crisis and loss. And yet somehow they struggle to cope with the hope they will prevail. In the title story a Cajun bartender struggles against fate and the two sons who have "stolen" his farm. A farmer turned bartender, Joe Lee LeBlanc sues his boys to recover the farm. His story circulates. He has his few minutes of fame as interest in his case grows. People stop ignoring the khakis-clad bartender. They ask about progress in his cause. Of course free beer and tomorrow never arrive. The old bartender never gets his day in court. Chekhov's story, The Lament, is recalled as one reads FBT, set in Opelousas, Louisiana, during the Yambilee Festival. The shadow world of cockfighting with its unlawfulness and potential for violence is the environment where one youngster is coming of age. The Cockfighters, reminiscent of Sherwood Anderson's I Want To Know Why, and Ernest Hemingway's My Old Man, also has a Louisiana locale where the law and the Church (ironically in the Parish of St. Landry) turn a blind eye to the blood "sport" in which fighting cocks usually duel to the death. An unknown assailant kills the boy's father after a highly wagered cockfight. The Lad, freed from the sport, is urged to get an education by his guardian, a former prostitute and the mistress of the dead father. At the end of the story, the father's murder remains unsolved. And a sable rooster with a fighting spirit, a bird the family pinned its hopes on, is killed in a cockpit battle it was supposed to win. We are left to ponder what part the little cock had to do with the death of the father after the little bird is found nailed to a post outside the cockfighting arena. The question of the boy's true understanding of his father's profession remains unresolved. The boy is last seen studying hard in school, reading Hemingway and thinking about horseracing as a career. In The Picaninny, an African American child is forced to leave the South after innocently kissing a white boy. Later she finds fame as a singer in the North. She returns to her "roots" in Mississippi. She finds change and understanding after talking to a crippled white man from her past. She leaves Mississippi a second time but without " baggage". The protagonist in To Kill A Kingfish races against time to stop his cousin from killing Louisiana's former governor (U.S. Senator Huey Long in the story). The tale unfolds as the protagonist's grandson attempts to unravel a relative's ties to the assassination plot. In the end the grandson "scruples" and decides to let the story remain unrecorded. The WWII pilot hero of Beau Chandler's Wonderful Bedroom returns from the Battle and settles in New York City. He finds the perfect one bedroom that eventually becomes the prize in a battle of another sort. Chandler, a gentile, and Kahan, a Jew who manages the building, are both obsessed with the apartment but for different reasons. Both men are oblivious to some of the reasons the war was fought. There is no brotherly love in the story. In the end the old pilot, an alcoholic, dies in a fall down a stairwell. Was he pushed over the railing by Kahan? Does the old man simply give up the fight? In the end the thought lingers: how easily man is motivated to kill.

Book excerpt: Motivated by potentially turning Flushing Meadows, literally a land of refuse, into his greatest public park, Robert Moses—New York's "Master Builder"—brought the World's Fair to the Big Apple for 1964 and '65. Though considered a financial failure, the 1964-65 World' s Fair was a Sixties flashpoint in areas from politics to pop culture, technology to urban planning, and civil rights to violent crime. In an epic narrative, the New York Times bestseller Tomorrow-Land shows the astonishing pivots taken by New York City, America, and the world during the Fair. It fetched Disney's empire from California and Michelangelo's La Pieta from Europe; and displayed flickers of innovation from Ford, GM, and NASA—from undersea and outerspace colonies to personal computers. It housed the controversial work of Warhol (until Governor Rockefeller had it removed); and lured Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters. Meanwhile, the Fair—and its house band, Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians—sat in the musical shadows of the Beatles and Bob Dylan, who changed rock-and-roll right there in Queens. And as Southern civil rights efforts turned deadly, and violent protests also occurred in and around the Fair, Harlem-based Malcolm X predicted a frightening future of inner-city racial conflict. World's Fairs have always been collisions of eras, cultures, nations, technologies, ideas, and art. But the trippy, turbulent, Technicolor, Disney, corporate, and often misguided 1964-65 Fair was truly exceptional.

Book excerpt: Until Tomorrow is an action/suspense novel with a definite Christian content. Reverend Greg Post battles spiritual and secular evil forces in his church. Greg arrives in Arcadia, a small town in southern Ohio, very self-satisfied. But he encounters unforeseen troubles: anger, resentment, greed and bedfellows who are evil to the core. Those conditions can rot any community from within. Psalms 12:8 says “The wicked walk on every side when the vilest men are exalted.” KJV Greg will see it happen in Arcadia. He finds both danger and romance, unaware that he has heavenly help.
