'The Adventures of Tom Sawyer' follows the mischievous young boy Tom Sawyer as he navigates the challenges of boyhood in the antebellum South, showcasing Twain's skillful use of satire and humor. In contrast, 'The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn' delves into deeper themes of morality and freedom as Huck Finn and the runaway slave Jim embark on a journey down the Mississippi River, tackling issues of racism and society. Twain's distinctive literary style is characterized by his keen observations of human nature and his ability to convey complex ideas in a straightforward manner. Mark Twain, a pseudonym for Samuel Clemens, drew inspiration for his novels from his own experiences growing up in Missouri and working as a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River. His wit and keen observations of society allowed him to critique the societal norms of his time, making his work both entertaining and thought-provoking. I recommend Twain's 'The Adventures of Tom Sawyer' and 'The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn' to readers who appreciate timeless coming-of-age stories with social commentary. Twain's masterful storytelling and engaging characters continue to captivate audiences today, making these novels essential reads for anyone interested in American literature.

This book contains two novels by Mark Twain : I - The Adventures of Tom Sawyer II - The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is about a young boy growing up along the Mississippi River. Tom Sawyer accompanies Huckleberry Finn to the graveyard at night, where they witness a trio of body snatchers getting into a fight. When one of the men is killed, they overhear the murderer's plans to bury a box of treasure. What follows is a an adventure of a lifetime, as Tom and Huck search for the hidden treasure. Huckleberry Finn runs away from the abuse of his alcoholic father. He immediately befriends a runaway slave named Jim, who is escaping the abuse of his owners. The two set out on a journey that involves theft, murder, and revenge. Along the way, Huckleberry Finn encounters Tom Sawyer, and the two hatch a plan to save Jim from a lifetime of slavery. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain is an 1876 novel about a young boy growing up along the Mississippi River. The story is set in the fictional town of St. Petersburg, inspired by Hannibal, Missouri, where Twain lived. Tom Sawyer lives with his Aunt Polly and his half-brother Sid. Tom dirties his clothes in a fight and is made to whitewash the fence the next day as punishment. He cleverly persuades his friends to trade him small treasures for the privilege of doing his work. He then trades the treasures for Sunday School tickets which one normally receives for memorizing verses, redeeming them for a Bible, much to the surprise and bewilderment of the superintendent who thought "it was simply preposterous that this boy had warehoused two thousand sheaves of Scriptural wisdom on his premises - a dozen would strain his capacity, without a doubt." Tom falls in love with Becky Thatcher, a new girl in town, and persuades her to get "engaged" by kissing him. But their romance collapses when she learns Tom has been "engaged" previously to Amy Lawrence. Shortly after Becky shuns him, he accompanies Huckleberry Finn to the graveyard at night, where they witness the murder of Dr. Robinson.

Book excerpt: EXCEPTIONAL UNABRIDGED EDITION TWO NOVELS IN A SINGLE BOOK Read two of the greatest masterpieces of all time in a beautiful edition. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, first published in 1876, features one of the best-loved characters in American fiction. The novel is redolent of life in the Mississippi River towns in which Mark Twain spent his own youth. A sombre undercurrent flows through the high humour and unabashed nostalgia of the novel, however, for beneath the innocence of childhood lie the inequities of adult reality - base emotions and superstitions, murder and revenge, starvation and slavery. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885) is the direct sequel to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Intended at first as a simple story of a boy's adventures in the Mississippi Valley, the book grew and matured under Twain's hand into a work of immeasurable richness and complexity. Both novels are commonly named among the Great American novels. Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835-1910) was trained as a steamboat pilot on the Mississippi river - 'Mark Twain', phrase used on riverboats to indicate that the water is two fathoms deep and therefore safe, became the pen name by which he was best known. Book excerpt: Book One: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain is an 1876 novel about a young boy growing up along the Mississippi River. It is set in the fictional town of St. Petersburg, inspired by Hannibal, Missouri, where Twain lived. Tom Sawyer lives with his Aunt Polly and his half-brother Sid. He skips school to swim and is made to whitewash the fence the next day as punishment. He cleverly persuades his friends to trade him small treasures for the privilege of doing his work. He then trades the treasures for Sunday School tickets which one normally receives for memorizing verses consistently, redeeming them for a Bible, much to the surprise and bewilderment of the superintendent who thought "it was simply preposterous that this boy had warehoused two thousand sheaves of Scriptural wisdom on his premises-a dozen would strain his capacity, without a doubt." Book Two: Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (or, in more recent editions, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn) is a novel by Mark Twain, first published in the United Kingdom in December 1884 and in the United States in February 1885. Commonly named among the Great American Novels, the work is among the first in major American literature to be written throughout in vernacular English, characterized by local color regionalism. It is told in the first person by Huckleberry "Huck" Finn, a friend of Tom Sawyer and narrator of two other Twain novels (Tom Sawyer Abroad and Tom Sawyer, Detective). It is a direct sequel to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Tom Sawyer Abroad is a novel by Mark Twain published in 1894. It features Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn in a parody of adventure stories like those of Jules Verne. In the story, Tom, Huck, and Jim set sail to Africa in a futuristic hot air balloon, where they survive encounters with lions, robbers, and fleas to see some of the world's greatest wonders, including the Pyramids and the Sphinx. Like Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer, Detective, the story is told using the first-person narrative voice of Huck Finn. It is a sequel, set in the time following the title story of the Tom Sawyer series. Book Four: Tom Sawyer, Detective Is an 1896 novel by Mark Twain. It is a sequel to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), and a prequel to Tom Sawyer Abroad (1894). Tom Sawyer attempts to solve a mysterious murder in this burlesque of the immensely popular detective novels of the time. Like Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the story is told using the first-person narrative voice of Huck Finn.

Book excerpt: o Includes the authoritative texts for eleven pieces written between 1868 and 1902 o Publishes, for the first time, the complete text of "Villagers of 1840-3," Mark Twain's astounding feat of memory o Features a biographical directory and notes that reflect extensive new research on Mark Twain's early life in Missouri Throughout his career, Mark Twain frequently turned for inspiration to memories of his youth in the Mississippi River town of Hannibal, Missouri. What has come to be known as the Matter of Hannibal inspired two of his most famous books, Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, and provided the basis for the eleven pieces reprinted here. Most of these selections (eight of them fiction and three of them autobiographical) were never completed, and all were left unpublished. Written between 1868 and 1902, they include a diverse assortment of adventures, satires, and reminiscences in which the characters of his own childhood and of his best-loved fiction, particularly Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer, come alive again. The autobiographical recollections culminate in an astounding feat of memory titled "Villagers of 1840-3" in which the author, writing for himself alone at the age of sixty-one, recalls with humor and pathos the characters of some one hundred and fifty people from his childhood. Accompanied by notes that reflect extensive new research on Mark Twain's early life in Missouri, the selections in this volume offer a revealing view of Mark Twain's varied and repeated attempts to give literary expression to the Matter of Hannibal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn contains four complete novels written by Mark Twain. THE ADVENTURES OF TOM SAWYER ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN (Tom Sawyer's Comrade) TOM SAWYER ABROAD TOM SAWYER, DETECTIVE THE ADVENTURES OF TOM SAWYER This edition has the original text from 1884 Tom Sawyer, an orphan, lives with his Aunt Polly and his half-brother Sid in the fictional town of St. Petersburg, Missouri sometime in the 1840s. A fun-loving boy, Tom skips school to go swimming and is made to whitewash his aunt's fence for the entirety of the next day, Saturday, as punishment. ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN (Tom Sawyer's Comrade) 1884 edition with the original text. The story begins in fictional St. Petersburg, Missouri (based on the actual town of Hannibal, Missouri), on the shore of the Mississippi River "forty to fifty years ago" (the novel having been published in 1884). Huckleberry "Huck" Finn (the protagonist and first-person narrator) and his friend, Thomas "Tom" Sawyer, have each come into a considerable sum of money as a result of their earlier adventures (detailed in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer). Huck explains how he is placed under the guardianship of the Widow Douglas, who, together with her stringent sister, Miss Watson, are attempting to "sivilize" him and teach him religion. Finding civilized life confining, his spirits are raised somewhat when Tom Sawyer helps him to escape one night past Miss Watson's slave Jim, to meet up with Tom's gang of self-proclaimed "robbers". Just as the gang's activities begin to bore Huck, he is suddenly interrupted by the reappearance of his shiftless father, "Pap", an abusive alcoholic. Knowing that Pap would only spend the money on alcohol, Huck is successful in preventing Pap from acquiring his fortune; however, Pap kidnaps Huck and leaves town with him. EXPLANATORY IN this book a number of dialects are used, to wit: the Missouri negro dialect; the extremest form of the backwoods Southwestern dialect; the ordinary "Pike County" dialect; and four modified varieties of this last. The shadings have not been done in a haphazard fashion, or by guesswork; but painstakingly, and with the trustworthy guidance and support of personal familiarity with these several forms of speech. I make this explanation for the reason that without it many readers would suppose that all these characters were trying to talk alike and not succeeding. THE AUTHOR. TOM SAWYER ABROAD Tom, Huck, and Jim travel to Africa in a futuristic hot air balloon, where they survive encounters with lions, robbers, and fleas to see some of the world's greatest wonders, including the Pyramids and the Sphinx. TOM SAWYER, DETECTIVE Tom Sawyer attempts to solve a mysterious murder in this burlesque of the immensely popular detective novels of the time. Why does this book cost more than other versions on Amazon? This edition is printed using a 12 pt. font and is designed to be more readable than other cheaper knock-offs. Make sure you "Look Inside" this book so you can see the difference.
