Book excerpt: In this hard-boiled mystery, a Brooklyn bodyguard-turned-P.I. investigates a case involving funk, R&B, and his grandfather’s murder. Ex-bodyguard D Hunter heads to the City of Angels on a very dark mission when his grandfather, businessman Daniel “Big Danny” Hunter, is shot dead in a drive-by. Why would someone execute a grocery store owner? D soon finds there was more to Big Danny’s life than selling loaves of bread. The old man was deeply involved with Dr. Funk, a legendary musical innovator who has become a mysterious recluse. To Funk and Die in L.A. is set largely in the Los Angeles neighborhoods of Crenshaw, Koreatown, and Pico-Union—areas where Black, Asian, and Latino cultures intersect away from the glamour of Hollywood—and echoes of the 1992 riots play a significant role in D’s investigation. In the tradition of Raymond Chandler and Walter Mosley, D Hunter rides through the mean streets of Los Angeles seeking truth and not always finding justice. Praise for To Funk and Die in L.A. “A supercharged spin through the dynamic, ever-changing neighborhoods of urban LA. Nelson George’s new book is full of music, secrets, heart, and more than a little heartbreak.” —Nina Revoyr, author of A Student of History “Inventive and well-written . . . I really enjoyed To Funk and Die in LA.” —Don Winslow, New York Times–bestselling author of City on Fire “George explores funk in his fine fourth novel featuring D Hunter, New York bodyguard and, by virtue of his jobs and interests, music historian . . . . As usual, George writes with knowledge and passion about the evolution of Black music.” —Publishers Weekly “Critic and journalist George knows the streets and his work has a gritty feel that will hold readers’ attention. Name-dropping of 1970s and 1980s performers such as the Dazz Band, Shalamar, and Chaka Khan adds spice to this well-crafted mystery.” —Library Journal

Book excerpt: A P.I.-turned-talent manger’s new client leads him into dangerous territory in this hard-boiled novel by the author of To Funk and Die in L.A. Former bodyguard D Hunter has moved to Los Angeles to become a talent manager, and business is good. He has signed a hot Atlanta rapper named Lil Daye and negotiated a lucrative endorsement with a liquor band. However, the liquor CEO’s unsavory sexual habits and reactionary political views lead D to wonder if he’s sold his soul. Back in Brooklyn, a body has been found in the waters near the Canarsie Pier. It connects D and retired hit man Ice to incidents from back in The Plot Against Hip Hop, the second book in the series. Now, an FBI agent wants to speak to D, which makes Ice nervous. And Ice is not a man you want worrying about you. Meanwhile Serene Powers, a vigilante and D’s sometime collaborator, breaks up a human trafficking ring in London. When she returns to the States, D asks her for assistance with a sensitive and volatile matter in Atlanta involving Lil Daye, his wife, his mistress, and a thug on his payroll named Ant . . . The Darkest Hearts reflects the challenges of being a Black businessperson in an era when the rules of entrepreneurship are constantly shifting beneath an increasingly polarized political environment. Praise for The Darkest Hearts “Once again, my brother Nelson George comes through in the clutch like he’s batting clean-up. I’ve known Nelson over thirty years and he has been our cultural storyteller for that length of time. Keep telling. Keep writing our stories. I know I will keep reading them too.” —Spike Lee, filmmaker “George’s passion for, and encyclopedic knowledge of, hip-hop suffuses every word of this smart, stylish novel. Although the author deftly deals with issues of predatory capitalism, government corruption, and the senseless murder of Black men by America’s cops, it’s his handling of the tale’s sex trafficking and #MeToo subplots that deserves special acclaim.” —Mystery Scene Magazine “Smart . . . This action-packed crime novel both educates and entertains.” —Publishers Weekly “We’re big fans of music mysteries here at CrimeReads, so I'm psyched for the new Nelson George . . . A complex mystery that should serve as the perfect quarantine distraction.” —CrimeReads, One of CrimeReads’ 10 Novels You Should Read This August and One of the Most Anticipated Crime Books of 2020 “This dark, rollicking mystery is the fifth in George's D Hunter series . . . D’s point of view, his self-confessed vulnerability, and his deep appreciation for music, from R&B on, make this thoroughly satisfying reading.” —Booklist

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How gangsta rap shocked America, made millions, and pulled back the curtain on an urban crisis. How is it that gangsta rap—so dystopian that it struck aspiring Brooklyn rapper and future superstar Jay-Z as “over the top”—was born in Los Angeles, the home of Hollywood, surf, and sun? In the Reagan era, hip-hop was understood to be the music of the inner city and, with rare exception, of New York. Rap was considered the poetry of the street, and it was thought to breed in close quarters, the product of dilapidated tenements, crime-infested housing projects, and graffiti-covered subway cars. To many in the industry, LA was certainly not hard-edged and urban enough to generate authentic hip-hop; a new brand of black rebel music could never come from La-La Land. But it did. In To Live and Defy in LA, Felicia Viator tells the story of the young black men who built gangsta rap and changed LA and the world. She takes readers into South Central, Compton, Long Beach, and Watts two decades after the long hot summer of 1965. This was the world of crack cocaine, street gangs, and Daryl Gates, and it was the environment in which rappers such as Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, and Eazy-E came of age. By the end of the 1980s, these self-styled “ghetto reporters” had fought their way onto the nation’s radio and TV stations and thus into America’s consciousness, mocking law-and-order crusaders, exposing police brutality, outraging both feminists and traditionalists with their often retrograde treatment of sex and gender, and demanding that America confront an urban crisis too often ignored.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “wickedly entertaining” crime thriller from a renowned chronicler of the world of rap music (Kirkus Reviews). Finalist for the NAACP Image Award in Literature The stabbing murder of esteemed music critic Dwayne Robinson in a Soho office building has been dismissed by the NYPD as a gang initiation. But his old friend, bodyguard and security expert D Hunter, suspects there are larger forces at work. D Hunter’s investigation into his mentor’s murder leads into a parallel history of hip hop, a place where renegade government agents, behind-the-scenes power brokers, and paranoid journalists know a truth that only a few hardcore fans suspect. This rewrite of hip hop history mixes real-life figures with characters pulled from the culture’s hidden world, including Jay-Z, Kanye West, and Russell Simmons. “This hard-boiled tale is jazzed up with authentic street slang and name-dropping (Biggie, Mary J. Blige, Lil Wayne, and Chuck D) . . . George’s tightly packaged mystery pivots on a believable conspiracy . . . and his street cred shines in his descriptions of Harlem and Brownsville’s mean streets.” —Library Journal “George is a well-known, respected hip-hop chronicler . . . Now he adds crime fiction to his resume with a carefully plotted crime novel peopled by believable characters and real-life hip-hop personalities.” —Booklist “Reads almost like Thomas Pynchon's Inherent Vice, but in the world of rap music . . . If you love crime fiction and you love hip hop, this book is a must read.” —BookRiot “Part procedural murder mystery, part conspiracy-theory manifesto . . . .The writing is as New York as ‘Empire State of Mind,’ and D is a detective compelling enough to anchor a series.” —Time Out New York

Book excerpt: Nominated for the Brooklyn Public Library's Brooklyn Eagles Literary Prize for Fiction "This is a fine mystery and [protagonist] D Hunter is as world weary, yet steadfast, as Philip Marloew, Spenser, Dave Robicheaux, or Easy Rawlins. A definite yes to purchase for both mystery and African American collections." --Library Journal (Starred Review, Pick of the Month) "George covers a lot of ground with style: the rhythm-and-blues music scene past and present, the sometimes startling evolution of Brooklyn and its environs, and the multitude of hangers-on, wannabes, and grifters who want a piece of the action." --Publishers Weekly "Real relationships and real talk frame the mashup of mysteries in George's street-framed series." --Kirkus Reviews "The wonderful sing-song street slang dialogue and esoteric industry knowledge make The Lost Treasures of R&B a richly entertaining addition to George's evolving series." --Shelf Awareness "George uses The Lost Treasures of R&B to tackle the hot-button issue of the gentrification of Brooklyn (and elsewhere) as protagonist D struggles to come to terms with the ghosts of his childhood in 'old Brooklyn.'" --Philadelphia Tribune "Written in the spirit of authors such as Walter Mosley and Donald Goines...The book blends music from the past with thug appeal of the present to appeal to young and old alike." --Baltimore Times "George is a historian of his culture." --The Stranger "Hunter is back in Brooklyn solving a mystery that has a backdrop firmly on the R&B scene." --NBCBLK, 14 Books to Read This Black History Month "Like its predecessor this installment of D's story fuses music, history, and crime on the streets of New York." --Flavorpill NYC "Nelson George delivers an entertaining and hard-boiled look at the music scene, and raises the question of proprietary rights and black culture." --MysteryPeople, One of Three Picks for February "As a huge R&B fan, when I ran across the title, The Lost Treasures of R&B, I just had to read it...and I'm glad I did." --Underrated Reads Professional bodyguard D Hunter takes a gig protecting rapper Asya Roc at an underground fight club in poverty-stricken Brownsville, Brooklyn. Unknown to D, the rapper has arranged to purchase illegal guns at the event. An acquaintance of D from the streets (and from the novel The Plot Against Hip Hop) named Ice turns out to be the courier. During the exchange a robbery is attempted. Ice is wounded. D gets Asya Roc to safety but is then chased by two gunmen because he has the bag containing the guns. This lethal chase ends under the elevated subway where D and the two gunmen run into a corrupt detective named Rivera. A bloody shootout ensues. D, who has just moved back to Brooklyn after decades in Manhattan, finds himself involved in multiple mysteries. Who were the gunmen? Why were they after the guns? Who was being set up--Asya Roc or Ice? Meanwhile, he gets a much-needed paying assignment to track down the rarest soul music single ever recorded. With gentrifying Brooklyn as the backdrop, D works to unravel various mysteries--both criminal and musical--while coming to terms with the failure of his security company and the ghosts of his childhood in "old Brooklyn." Like its predecessors The Accidental Hunter and The Plot Against Hip Hop, The Lost Treasures of R&B uses pop music as the backdrop for a noir-flavored big-city tale.

For starters, they are all pop stars that have enjoyed the experience of having their songs reach the Number One position on the American music charts. They are also among the 140 artists who responded to writer Randolph Michael's call to be questioned for this book, Flashbacks to Happiness, which is a survey of hit songs of the 1980's and what it took to make them. Readers who are interested in popular music, and the '80's decade in particular, will find the interviews included within these pages to be fascinating testaments of how the music industry has changed to such a drastic extent in the last 20 years. It also details how artists have managed to keep their careers alive despite today's increasingly unstable marketplace and often-fickle music buying public.

The contributors, who represent a range of international perspectives, analyse how hip-hop is employed to express dissatisfaction and dissent relating to such issues as immigration, racism, stereotypes and post-colonialism. Utilising a range of methodological approaches, they shed light on diverse hip-hop cultures and practices around the world, highlighting issues of relevance in the different countries from which their research originates. Together, the authors expand on current global understandings of hip-hop, language and culture, and underline its immense power as a form of popular culture through which the disenfranchised and oppressed can gain and maintain a voice. This thought-provoking edited collection is a must-read for scholars and students of linguistics, race studies and political activism, and for anyone with an interest in hip-hop.

Despite an epic reputation for exhibitionism, drug taking and debauchery, through it all the Chili Peppers have continued to produce records that shock, challenge and intrigue their fans. Author Jeff Apter has interviewed dozens of people - many speaking openly for the first time - who have moved in and out of the Chili Peppers' circle over the past three decades. He has spoken with former Chili Peppers, life-long friends, classmates, family members, album producers and music business insiders, as he plots the band's rise from Hollywood 'latchkey kids', willing to test-drive any drug or woman they could score, to the camomile-tea sipping superstars of today, whose only true family is this band.

Book excerpt: This series of HANDBOOKS OF LINGUISTICS AND COMMUNICATION SCIENCE is designed to illuminate a field which not only includes general linguistics and the study of linguistics as applied to specific languages, but also covers those more recent areas which have developed from the increasing body of research into the manifold forms of communicative action and interaction. For "classic" linguistics there appears to be a need for a review of the state of the art which will provide a reference base for the rapid advances in research undertaken from a variety of theoretical standpoints, while in the more recent branches of communication science the handbooks will give researchers both an verview and orientation. To attain these objectives, the series will aim for a standard comparable to that of the leading handbooks in other disciplines, and to this end will strive for comprehensiveness, theoretical explicitness, reliable documentation of data and findings, and up-to-date methodology. The editors, both of the series and of the individual volumes, and the individual contributors, are committed to this aim. The languages of publication are English, German, and French. The main aim of the series is to provide an appropriate account of the state of the art in the various areas of linguistics and communication science covered by each of the various handbooks; however no inflexible pre-set limits will be imposed on the scope of each volume. The series is open-ended, and can thus take account of further developments in the field. This conception, coupled with the necessity of allowing adequate time for each volume to be prepared with the necessary care, means that there is no set time-table for the publication of the whole series. Each volume will be a self-contained work, complete in itself. The order in which the handbooks are published does not imply any rank ordering, but is determined by the way in which the series is organized; the editor of the whole series enlist a competent editor for each individual volume. Once the principal editor for a volume has been found, he or she then has a completely free hand in the choice of co-editors and contributors. The editors plan each volume independently of the others, being governed only by general formal principles. The series editor only intervene where questions of delineation between individual volumes are concerned. It is felt that this (modus operandi) is best suited to achieving the objectives of the series, namely to give a competent account of the present state of knowledge and of the perception of the problems in the area covered by each volume.
