Book excerpt: Three magical sisters. A raja with claws. A labyrinth of deceit. Darkness wakens in Jalapashu. In this kingdom, silks are soaked in blood, and bones bend like boughs. To survive, my witch sisters and I must buckle up and learn fast. The seer is gone. Her parrot warns that we must find her before time runs out. We unravel the raja’s tangled web of corruption, discovering how many people he has wronged. None more so than the enigmatic general, whose terrible curse means he can’t shift into his true form. I take refuge in his soft kisses, but our deepening chemistry is just another secret to keep. With black magic closing in, the raja’s wrath is one misstep away. I captivate him, but he is suspicious. He and his courtiers–including my grandfather–aren’t afraid to fight dirty. But a woman in midlife stalks her own path. Will I rescue my friends from the raja’s clutches before he wises up to our treachery, or will he ensnare me, too? To Curse a Rival is the second book in a Paranormal Women’s Fiction series. If you’re a fan of stories about the strength of sisterhood, the allure of forbidden love and the resilience of women in their midlife, you’ll find yourself spellbound until the final page. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the discovery of abundant oil resources in the 1920s, Venezuela has had an economically privileged position among the nations of Latin America, which has led to its being treated by economic and political analysts as an exceptional case. In her well-known study of Venezuela’s political economy, The Paradox of Plenty (1997), Stanford political scientist Terry Karl argued that this oil wealth induced extraordinary corruption, rent-seeking, and centralized intervention that resulted in restricting productivity and growth. What this and other studies of Venezuela’s economy fail to explain, however, is how such conditions have accompanied both growth and stagnation at different periods of Venezuela’s history and why countries experiencing similar levels of corruption and rent-seeking produce divergent developmental outcomes. By investigating the record of economic development in Venezuela from 1920 to the present, Jonathan Di John shows that the key to explaining why the economy performed much better between 1920 and 1980 than in the post-1980 period is to understand how political strategies interacted with economic strategies—specifically, how politics determined state capacity at any given time and how the stage of development and development strategies affected the nature of political conflicts. In emphasizing the importance of an approach that looks at the political economy, not just at the economy alone, Di John advances the field methodologically while he contributes to a long-needed history of Venezuela’s economic performance in the twentieth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Innovation-making is a classic theme in anthropology that reveals how people fine-tune their ontologies, live in the world and conceive of it as they do. This ethnographic study is an entrance into the world of Buryat Mongol divination, where a group of cursed shamans undertake the 'race against time' to produce innovative remedies that will improve their fallen fortunes at an unconventional pace. Drawing on parallels between social anthropology and chaos theory, the author gives an in-depth account of how Buryat shamans and their notion of fortune operate as 'strange attractors' who propagate the ongoing process of innovation-making. With its view into this long-term 'cursing war' between two shamanic factions in a rural Mongolian district, and the comparative findings on cursing in rural China, this book is a needed resource for anyone with an interest in the anthropology of religion, shamanism, witchcraft and genealogical change. Katherine Swancutt is a Research Fellow in Social Anthropology at the University of Oxford. She has carried out fieldwork on shamanic religion across Inner Asia, working among Buryats in northeast Mongolia and China since 1999, and among the Nuosu of Southwest China since 2007.
