Book excerpt: A Latin text Titi Lvcreti Cari De Rervm Natvra Liber Tertivs Titus Lucretius Carus (15 October 99 BC - c. 55 BC) was a Roman poet and philosopher. His only known work is the philosophical poem De rerum natura, a didactic work about the tenets and philosophy of Epicureanism, and which is usually translated into English as On the Nature of Things. Lucretius has been credited with originating the concept of the three-age system which was formalised from 1834 by C. J. Thomsen. Very little is known about Lucretius's life; the only certain fact is that he was either a friend or client of Gaius Memmius, to whom the poem was addressed and dedicated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third book of Lucretius' great poem on the workings of the universe is devoted entirely to expounding the implications of Epicurus' dictum that death does not matter, 'is nothing to us'. The soul is not immortal: it no more exists after the dissolution of the body than it had done before its birth. Only if this fact is accepted can men rid themselves of irrational fears and achieve the state of ataraxia, freedom from mental disturbance, on which the Epicurean definition of pleasure was based. To present this case Lucretius deploys the full range of poetic and rhetorical registers, soberly prohibitive, artfully decorative or passionately emotive as best suits his argument, reinforcing it with vivid and compelling imagery. This new edition has been completely revised, with a considerably enlarged Commentary and a new supplementary introduction taking account of the great amount of new scholarship of the last forty years.

Book excerpt: Six hundred years after Poggio’s retrieval of the De rerum natura, and with the recent surge of interest in Lucretius and his influence, there has never been a better time to fully assess and recognize the shaping force of his thought and poetry over European culture from antiquity to modern times. This volume offers a multidisciplinary and updated overview of Lucretius as philosopher and as poet, with special attention to how these two aspects interact. The volume includes 18 contributions by established as well as early career scholars working on Lucretius’ philosophical and poetic work, and his reception both in ancient and early modern times. All the chapters present new and original research. Section I explores core issues of Epicurean-Lucretian epistemology and ethics. Section II expounds much new material on ancient response to and reception of Lucretius. Section III presents new material and analysis on the immediate, fraught early modern reception of the poem. Section IV offers a wide collection of new and original papers on Lucretius’ fortunes in the period from Machiavelli up to Victorian times. Section V explores little known aspects of the iconographical and biographical motifs related to the De rerum natura.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alleged incompatibility of Epicurus’ philosophy with rhetoric has led modern scholars to isolate rhetorical procedures in Lucretius’ De rerum natura and regard them as non-Epicurean, accessory features. This study of Lucretius’ rhetorical procedures is based on a wider understanding of the term rhetoric, not limited to the genre of oratory. In a fresh discussion of the questions of provenance and the role of the most important formal procedures of exposition in De rerum natura the author argues that instead of injecting rhetorical strategies from non-Epicurean sources, Lucretius in fact intensified rhetorical elements already present in the work of Epicurus. These elements are used for the purpose of explanation, and function as cognitive and mnemonic aids for the reader.
Download or read book Lucretius III written by Thomas Nail and published by EUP. This book was released on 2022-02-28 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Lucretius, history means something surprisingly different than we ordinarily think. Instead of thinking of history in terms of time, Lucretius interprets it in terms of motion. The implications of this shift are enormous. It means time does not go on forever - the world was born and will die. These are strange and radical ways of thinking about history way ahead of their time. They prefigure, and even exceed in certain ways, the insights of thermodynamics and quantum physics. In this final volume of his trilogy on De Rerum Natura, Thomas Nail argues that Lucretius has a brilliant theory of history that was well ahead of its time and that we can benefit from today. This is especially true in the present time of crisis and pandemics due in part to global climate change. Nail shows that it's not too late to change our understanding of history and overcome our current crises. The time is ripe to reconsider the materiality and movement of history. The time is ripe to re-read one of the first and most radical theorists of history. We still have a lot to learn about history and there is no better guidebook than De Rerum Natura.
