In the past, numerous methods have been used to measure the coefficient of friction but the results of these methods seldom agree or yield the requisite accuracy necessary for a detailed analysis of vehicle dynamics. Tire traction is a complex process which has many variables. The method of using a portable accelerometer and a microcomputerized data acquisition and storage device was chosen as the best way to measure the coefficient of friction because it permits a test procedure which closely approximates the event being analyzed. Book excerpt: Three different tire/road coefficient of friction measuring methods are investigated and compared for their use in the field of vehicular accident reconstruction. Locked-wheel skid tests, considered to be the most accurate method, were performed with an instrumented test vehicle to establish base values that could be compared to values measured using a tow cable method and a portable drag sled method. A set of high performance radial tires and a set of standard production radial tires were each tested on two different surfaces to broaden the range of friction values measured. In a series of tow cable tests, the test vehicle was pulled, with wheels locked, over each surface at low speeds. The tow cable coefficient of friction decreased with increasing sliding speed. Portable drag sleds were constructed from a tire in each tire set. Weights were added to each drag sled to study the effect of increasing load on the coefficient of friction. Tests were performed with drag sleds weighing 26 pounds, 51 pounds, and 76 pounds. The drag sled coefficient of friction was independent of sliding speed. The investigation showed a correlation did not exist between the coefficient of friction values determined by the drag sled and tow cable methods when compared to the values determined by the locked-wheel skid test method. Depending on the tire/surface combination tested, the tow cable tests overestimated the skid test coefficient of friction by 28 to 81.4 percent. Similarly, the drag sleds overestimated the skid test coefficient of friction by 31.4 percent to as much as 114.5 percent

Book excerpt: This project concentrates on the development of real- time tire-road friction coefficient estimation systems for snowplows that can reliably estimate different road surface friction levels and quickly detect abrupt changes in friction coefficient. Two types of systems are developed - a vehicle-based system and a wheel-based system. The vehiclebased friction measurement system utilizes vehicle motion measurements from differential GPS and other on-board vehicle sensors. The wheel-based friction measurement system utilizes a redundant wheel that is mounted at a small angle to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle. Complete technical details on the vehicle-based friction measurement system are presented in this report. Compared to previously published results in literature, the advantage of the vehicle-based system developed here is that it is applicable during both vehicle acceleration and braking and works reliably for a wide range of slip ratios, including high slip conditions. The system can be utilized on front/rear-wheel drive as well as all- wheel drive vehicles. Extensive results are presented from experimental results conducted on various surfaces with a winter maintenance vehicle called the "SAFEPLOW." The experimental results show that the system performs reliably and quickly in estimating friction coefficient on different road surfaces during various vehicle maneuvers.
