This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprehensive and up-to-dateThe first contemporary publication to go beyond examining broad themes and trends in the field, this timely volume looks closely at specific authors and texts. The book is comprehensive and as current as possible, covering works by African American authors for young adults published between 1968-1993-some 200 titles by close to 50 writers. In addition to established authors and bestselling titles, the coverage includes material overlooked by previous studies, such as works from small presses and talented new authors.Guidlines for evaluationAn extensive introduction reviews important milestones in this body of literature and analyzes noteworthy bibliographical and critical publications about such writing. It includes suggested guidelines for evaluating a work in terms of its direct and indirect treatment of such issues as race, gender, class, ability, age, sexuality, and sexual orientation. The book also offers specific guidance for determining the appropriate readership for a work with regard to age and gender.Unusually extensive annotationsThe main body of the book is an annotated bibliography, alphabetical by author, with the works arranged chronologically by publication date. The annotations are much more extensive than those in other bibliographies. Each annotation reads more like a full-length book review and is from one to two pages long and explores themes, plot and character development, evaluates the quality of the writing, judges the handling of issues of race, class, and gender, and provides a readership recommendation.Written in accessible language, this user-friendly book presents a wide range of factual information, evaluations, and analyses. It is a valuable tool for all teachers, librarians, counselors, and young adults
Book Synopsis Buddhism Is Not What You Think by : Steve Hagen
Download or read book Buddhism Is Not What You Think written by Steve Hagen and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2009-03-17 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bestselling author and renowned Zen teacher Steve Hagen penetrates the most essential and enduring questions at the heart of the Buddha's teachings: How can we see the world in each moment, rather than merely as what we think, hope, or fear it is? How can we base our actions on reality, rather than on the longing and loathing of our hearts and minds? How can we live lives that are wise, compassionate, and in tune with reality? And how can we separate the wisdom of Buddhism from the cultural trappings and misconceptions that have come to be associated with it? Drawing on down-to-earth examples from everyday life and stories from Buddhist teachers past and present, Hagen tackles these fundamental inquiries with his trademark lucid, straightforward prose. The newcomer to Buddhism will be inspired by this accessible and provocative introduction, and those more familiar with Buddhism will welcome this much needed hands-on guide to understanding what it truly means to be awake. By being challenged to question what we take for granted, we come to see the world as it truly is. Buddhism Is Not What You Think offers a profound and clear path to a life of joy and freedom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have tried many things in my working years: steel worker, sweeper sales, campground owner, auto salvage yard operator, owner of an air compressor sales and service company, and owner of a miscellaneous metals center. I retired and sold everything. A year into retirement I volunteered to help with a project at church and found myself agreeing to take on the church maintenance, which lasted for four years. I have always had a more than passing interest in the arts. Over the years I've worked with wood, copper, iron, steel, and in my spare time I painted, mostly outdoor scenes with acrylics. Then I discovered glass etching. In my early years, the everyday work of providing for and raising a family didn't leave a lot of time for serious commitment to my artworks, but since my second retirement I have been able to fl y. I've etched sixteen windows for St. Anthony Catholic Church, Brooksville, FL; ten windows for The Florida Medical Center, Springhill, FL; six doors for St. Thomas Catholic Church, Homosassa, FL. I have works in restaurants, attorney's offi ces and many homes including that of Architect Hal Lenox. My artworks can be viewed on my web site in completed custom projects and gallery at, www.artworksbyrobertgsmith.com
