Book excerpt: Maine is a beautiful state and has a lot to offer for those who do not mind a little hardship (mostly due to its hard winters in the North), and I am sure you wouldn't mind being neighbours with some of the nicest folks in the world! Maine is one of the most-forested states in the US, with 90 % of its forest being privately owned. Mount Katahdin, Maine's highest mountain at one mile high, is at the end of the 2000- mile-long Appalachian Trail. Maine harvests the majority of the lobster in the United States. It also has 3,478 miles of coastline--more than California (3,427), and over 5,000 miles of coast if you include all of the islands, as well. When I was growing up in Presque Isle, Maine, located in Aroostook County (Maine's largest), The County was famous for its potatoes and still grows some of the best potatoes in the world. Clayton Lake where I worked for 26 years is also in Aroostook County and has been producing logs for lumber and pulp for the paper mills for many years. The North Maine Woods region also provides some of the best recreational areas in the world. Whether you simply want to go hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, snowmobiling and sight-seeing--to name a few options--or your goal is to make a living working in the forest, this book may help you. Or maybe I can just keep you informatively entertained. Through the various stories in this book, you will learn about staying safe in the forest, planning for your trip or your day's work, not getting lost, working with Mother Nature, understanding past and present forest-harvesting practices, protecting water quality, and, most importantly, respecting our forest resource. Other things this book will touch upon include living in Clayton Lake, the history of logging in Northern Maine, the history of the North Maine Woods organization, changes in land ownership over the years, road and bridge construction and maintenance, setting up a logging camp, border crossings and working relationships between the US and Canada

Book Synopsis Logging and Lumbering in Maine by : Donald A. Wilson
Download or read book Logging and Lumbering in Maine written by Donald A. Wilson and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known as the Pine Tree State, Maine once led the world in lumber production. It was the first great lumber-producing region, with Bangor at its center. Today, the state has nearly eighteen million acres of timberland, and forest products still make up a major industry. Logging and Lumbering in Maine examines the history from its earliest roots in 1630 to the present, providing a pictorial record of land use and activity in Maine. The state's lumber industry went through several historical periods, beginning with the vast pine and spruce harvests, the organization of major corporate interests, the change from sawlogs to pulpwood, and then to sustained yields, intensive management, and mechanized harvesting. At the beginning, much of the region was inaccessible except by water, so harvesting activities were concentrated on the coast and along the principal rivers. Gradually, as the railroads expanded and roads were constructed into the woods, operations expanded with them and the river systems became vitally important for the transportation of timber out of the woods to the markets downstate. Logging and Lumbering in Maine traces these developments in the industry, taking a close look at the people, places, forests, and machines that made them possible.

This book was released on 2022-08 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Moosehead Lake Region connected great river routes through the northern wilderness. For thousands of years, Native Americans canoed these waters. By the 1830s, Moosehead Lake became a staging ground for early Euro-American logging, settlement, and outdoor recreation, with Greenville as its supply center. Early rusticators included naturalist writer Henry David Thoreau. Later, guides like Greenville Algonquin Henry (Red Eagle) Perley and Penobscot Roland (Needahbeh) Nelson promoted this "Gateway to the North Woods" as an outdoor traveler's paradise. It is still today. --adapted from publisher's description.

Twelve-year-old Donn Fendler steps away from his Boy Scout troop for only a minute, but in the foggy mountains of Maine, a minute is all it takes. After hours of trying to find his way back, a nervous and tired Donn falls down an embankment, making it impossible for him to be found. One sleepless night goes by, followed by a second . . . and before Donn knows it, almost two weeks have passed, leaving him starving, scared, and delirious. With rainstorms, black bears, and his fear of being lost forever, Donn's journey is a physically, mentally, and emotionally charged story told from the point of view of the boy who lived it. Don't miss this thrilling survival story, a proven high-interest winner that pulls in readers the way Hatchet, My Side of the Mountain, and the I Survived books do.
