Book excerpt: 1942, India The Quit India movement was at its peak, and people from various parts of the country came together to fight for freedom. Several great leaders inspired thousands to join the movement, and Pushpalata Das was at the forefront of the struggle in Assam. Her call to rise against suppression led to numerous common men and women to stand up and turn their dream of an independent India into reality. Kanaklata Barua led one of the biggest peaceful processions towards the Gohpur Police Station in Assam, to hoist the Indian tricolor to mark the symbolic end of the British Raj in India. She was instrumental in mobilizing a large number of people into joining the freedom struggle. The seventeen-year-old tigress of Assam was shot dead from point blank range on 20th September 1942 by British Police. The Fearless Revolutionary is the hitherto unheard story of this braveheart who conquered fear at a very young age. Giving wings to her desire to see India as a free country, she made the supreme sacrifice at the altar of freedom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fall of Kilinochchi, LTTE's bastion for over a decade, in January 2009 is a landmark in the military campaign by the Sri Lankan government against the rebel group. This turning point in one of the world's most brutal intra-state conflicts needs to be analysed in the wider context of the developments in the country since the initiation of a ceasefire in Decenber 2001. Ths book focuses on the political vicissitudes of Sri Lanka since the initiation of this ceasefire which sought to end the violent confrontation between the LTTE and the armed forces of the government. The main theme is the peace process of Sri Lanka and the developments associated with its collapse. The book is both a detailed documentation of events that followed the ceasefire and an exercise in synthesis and analysis. The underlying argument is that sustainable peace cannot be achieved through negotiations until the Tigers disarm and abandon terrorism. It forecasts, with guarded optimism, that the recent battlefield defeats of the LTTE could be considered the final phase of the 'Eelam War' that began twenty-five years ago.

Book excerpt: A divided land. A shaky truce. An unforgettable adventure. Cimaris history is rife with magic; the verdant land exists because of the sacrifices of its first settlers. For centuries memory of that sacrifice, and respect for it, kept peace in Aeirs western half. But the power hungry, as they always do, must rise. Under words of peace, and finally admissions of war, the Tigers swept across Cimari and conquered the other prides one by one. Only the island of Ayari, and the Leopards who guarded its ancient relic, stood against them in their march south. Generations later a leopard princess, Kaia, was born with the rare all-black coloration that has marked great members of their line for eons. She, at the will of her father, is chosen to invade the Tiger fortress in a way she would never have forseen - a way that would change her life irrevocably, and the outcome of which will determine the fate of her people and all Cimari.

Book excerpt: Christian thinking and behavior is very much needed, at all levels, in all walks of life throughout the world today. Personal success is to be found in providing this. Doing well in whatever you do earns the right to be heard and exercise influence. Sometimes, this involves selfless service, and sometimes it requires intense, albeit fair, competition to attain high ranking, powerful positions. I believe it is very important for people, adhering to Christian teachings, to be present in the leadership structures of government, business, education, healthcare, entertainment, law, religion, etc -- and that they exercise their voices and power, in a reasonable manner, to strive for what is right. Just imagine what the world and our country would be like if dominated by atheists and/or radical proponents of other religions. For the sake of future generations worldwide, we must not let this happen. Therefore, we Christians must compete with skill, energy, imagination, ethics, and excited vision to achieve a better world. The purpose of this book is to share significant trials, temptations, triumphs, techniques, and tools I have experienced in my successful career, hoping to motivate and help Christian Tigers to succeed and help make the world a better place.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Caribbean islands have a vibrant oral folklore. In Jamaica, the clever spider Anansi, who outsmarts stronger animals, is a symbol of triumph by the weak over the powerful. The fables of the foolish Juan Bobo, who tries to bring milk home in a burlap bag, illustrate facets of traditional Puerto Rican life. Conflict over status, identity and power is a recurring theme--in a story from Trinidad, a young bull, raised by his mother in secret, challenges his tyrannical father who has killed all the other males in the herd. One in a series of folklore reference guides by the author, this volume shares summaries of 438 tales--some in danger of disappearing--retold in English and Creole from West African, European, and slave indigenous cultures in 24 countries and territories. Tales are grouped in themed sections with a detailed subject index and extensive links to online sources.
