Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume investigates how four socially constructed identities (race, gender, class and caste) can be rethought as matrices designed to accumulate various kinds of socio-economic values and to translate and transfer these values from one group to another. Essays in the anthology also attempt to compare the mechanisms deployed by various groups to consolidate identificatory investments. Drawn mainly for the fields of literary and cultural studies, the essays are grouped in four categories. Essays collected under ‘Theoretical Approaches’ scrutinize the relative value of various approaches; those collected under ‘Considerations of Race, Gender, and Sexual Orientation’ examine the interaction between these three categories in formation of identities; those grouped under ‘Comparative Analysis of African-American and Dalit Writing’ provide comparative analyses of the literary productions of these two oppressed groups; and, finally, those under ‘The Persistence of Racialized Perceptions’ focus on the role of ideologically inflected perception of European colonizers and the persistence of such perception in the categorization and treatment of colonial migrants to the metropolis.

This book was released on 2010-12-07 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: And below her hair; she would put on a garland and spend a few minutes just gazing into a pond; seeing her reflection and satisfying her desire before turning away and returning the worn garland to her flower basket The emperor Krishnadevaraya’s epic poem Amuktamalyada (Giver of the Worn Garland) depicts the life of the medieval Vaisnava poet-saint Andal; or Goda Devi as she is also known; and her passionate devotion to Lord Visnu. Krishnadevaraya’s unique poetic imagination brings to life a celestial world filled with wonder; creativity; humour and vibrant natural beauty. The mundane is made divine and the ordinary becomes extraordinary; the routine activities of daily life become expressive metaphors for heavenly actions; while the exalted gods of heaven are re-imagined as living persons. The poet’s ability to see divinity in the most commonplace activities is an extension of his powerful belief that god is everywhere; in everything; at all times.

Natural Heritage Tourist Centres in Tamil Nadu, 5. Fairs, Festivals and Folk Entertainments in Tamil Nadu, 6. Tourism Plant Facilities in Tamil Nadu, 7. Conclusion and Suggestions. - PREFACE: “Tourism in Tamil Nadu - Growth and Development” is a captivating theme. Man has been fascinated by travel and tourism from the earliest historical period. He always has had the urge to discover the unknown, to explore new and strange places, to seek changes of environment and to undergo new experiences. Travelling to achieve these ends is not new, but tourism is of a relatively modern origin. Tourism is distinguishable by its mass character from the travel undertaken in the past. This is largely a post-second world war phenomenon. Until recently only affluent people participated in tourism. Increased leisure, higher incomes and greatly enhanced mobility have combined to enable more people to participate in Tourism. Revolution in transport, technological progress and the emergence of a middle class with time and money to spare for recreation, has led to the growth of tourism—”the modern holiday industry”. Thus tourism is no longer the prerogative of a few but is an accepted part of life of a large number of people. India is one of the oldest civilizations with a kaleidoscopic variety and rich cultural heritage. For centuries India has been a centre of attraction for different people for different reasons. The ancient invaders viewed it as a goldmine with unlimited wealth to plunder; the learned were fascinated by its mystic spiritualism and profound philosophy; the uninitiated saw it as a land of naked fakirs and snake charmers; while the others were simply charmed by the sheer beauty of its natural attractions and amazing variety of its flora and fauna.

Download or read book Encyclopaedia of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh written by Om Gupta and published by Gyan Publishing House. This book was released on 2006-04 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India, Pakistan and Bangladesh share a long history, an emerging cordial and a common vision for the future. This book is not India-centric but deals with various aspects of all the three sovereign nations. Reading them together will be an unprecedented experience rarely attempted before. It has rarely happened in the modern world, how these three nations who geographically one but culturally so different are chalking out an independent place in the comity of nations at times with the help of each other and at another on its own merit and inherent strength. It is not written from any biased perspective. In fact, it explains people, places and events from a neutral world view. It is ideally an international venture that would benefit historians, teachers and students in the entire sub-continent It will be interesting to compare the three countries from different parameters, thus planning a wholesome picture. The encyclopedia aims at clearing confusions and contradiction that have crept in because of certain vested interests and it should be read from a neutral benchmark. These volumes very clearly and earlier suggest, how fatal the disintegrate have proven to these nations with the fact that divided these countries have in actuality fallen. In the face of achieving the target of universal supremacy.

Through Andal's verses, simplicity intertwines with profound significance, guiding readers along pathways illuminated by the principles of dharma, infusing the ordinary with divine essence. Each echo of the drum resonates with the great poet’s profound spiritual connection, gradually revealing the expanse of the spiritual universe and underscoring the significance of even the smallest beings. In her interpretation of Andal's Thiruppavai, the author marvels at the poet's adeptness in using a familiar bridal vow as a conduit to delve into and demystify esoteric realms. Through this shared tradition, Andal beckons readers to transcend human constructs, entering a world beyond imagination, while affirming the accessibility of the boundless spirit. As the tapestry of whispers unfolds, guided by rhythmic drumbeats, readers are drawn into the intricate layers of ancient wisdom. Witness the girls’ initial step, rooted in the familiar local tradition of the bridal vow, only to discover the expansive depths that lie beyond, offering a richer understanding of imbuing the Divine to enjoy, experience, and navigate the complexities of everyday life.
Book Synopsis A Hundred Measures of Time by : Nammalwar
Download or read book A Hundred Measures of Time written by Nammalwar and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2014-05-15 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Look, my feet measure beyond earth and sky!’ he said and touched the sky. I have surrendered to my lord who glanced at me with his large radiant eyes. The Tiruviruttam is an iconic poem by Nammāḻvār (c. ninth century CE), the greatest of the āḻvār poet-saints of the Tamil Śrīvaiṣṇava tradition. Its hundred interlinked verses celebrate the love between an anonymous heroine and hero, who come to be identified with Nammāḻvār and his beloved deity, Viṣṇu. The poet masterfully weaves the erotic and esoteric to reveal both the contours of love and the never-ending cycles of separation and union, of birth and death, from which only Viṣṇu can offer release. In A Hundred Measures of Time, Archana Venkatesan has crafted a sonorous free-verse rendering and an accompanying far-ranging essay to delight poetry lovers and scholars alike.
Book Synopsis The Tamil Padam by : Matthew Harp Allen
Download or read book The Tamil Padam written by Matthew Harp Allen and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-03-31 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a study of the Bharata Natyam dance genre "padam" focusing on its patrons and composers and its formal structure, texts, and music. It examines the "rewriting" of South Indian dance and the decades-long debates over the classicization and ownership of South Indian music. The control over the representation of the arts is a subject that should resonate with scholars working in a wide variety of genres and across many countries. The study is diachronic (historical) and also synchronic (examining padams’ organizational structure as a system). Importantly, the text includes 30 Tamil language songs, minutely translated and annotated together with a documentation of their performance history in the 20th century. Classical and modern music composers and performers, ethnomusicologists, librettists, singers, choreographers, art historians, dancers, dance scholars, and dance teachers will find them useful in giving students a deep contextual understanding of Bharata Natyam. The book will find an enthusiastic readership with dance teachers who are actively training Bharata Natyam students. It will also attract a scholarly audience as an anthropological and historical study of an artistic form which has a high profile in South Asia and has become prominent in the growing fields of ethnomusicology, dance ethnography and "world dance."
Book Synopsis In Praise of ?r? R?m?nuj? by : GOP?L SRINIV?SAN
Download or read book In Praise of ?r? R?m?nuj? written by GOP?L SRINIV?SAN and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This year is the 1,000th birth anniversary of the famous Bhakti saint ?r? R?m?nuj?. He lived for 120 years. He travelled the length and breadth of our vast country to preach his simple philosophy of loving God and surrendering to Him to attain liberation (moksha). This was not to be a preserve of the upper classes or the affluent. He touched every human being with whom he empathised and wanted all of them to be liberated. Swami Vivekananda referred to ?r? R?m?nuj? as a saint of the heart, as his heart went out to the downtrodden. His philosophy was practical and not abstract. It recognised the existential reality of the world. Referred to as Vishishtadvaita, the philosophy was woven around a personal God with all auspicious qualities and attributes. It combined the revelations of the Vedas and the outpourings of the Vaishnavite saints from South India called ?zhw?rs (those who dug deep into the love of God). God was not only the end to strive for, but the means as well. ?r? R?m?nuj? composed totally nine works in Sanskrit, his magnum opus being the interpretation of Sage Vyasa’s Brahmas?tra titled ?r? Bh?shy?. His extensive early training in Namm?zhw?r’s Thiruv?imozhi was the foundation for his philosophy, ?r? R?m?nuj? Dar?an?. ?r? R?m?nuj? was a leader par excellence and compassion personified. Amudan?r who composed the poem of 108 verses translated in this book, says that ?r? R?m?nuj? succeeded where the Supreme Lord failed. The Lord was unhappy that in spite of his descending to earth in various incarnations, the people by and large lived in deep misery without any sense of purpose. He, therefore, chose to incarnate as ?r? R?m?nuj?. The Lord succeeded in His mission during this incarnation.
