Book excerpt: This book tells the story of the early modern astronomer Johannes Kepler’s Somnium, which has been regarded by science historians and literary critics alike as the first true example of science fiction. Kepler began writing his complex and heavily-footnoted tale of a fictional Icelandic astronomer as an undergraduate and added to it throughout his life. The Somnium fuses supernatural and scientific models of the cosmos through a satirical defense of Copernicanism that features witches, lunar inhabitants, and a daemon who speaks in the empirical language of modern science. Swinford’s looks at the ways that Kepler’s Somnium is influenced by the cosmic dream, a literary genre that enjoyed considerable popularity among medieval authors, including Geoffrey Chaucer, Dante, John of Salisbury, Macrobius, and Alan of Lille. He examines the generic conventions of the cosmic dream, also studying the poetic and theological sensibilities underlying the categories of dreams formulated by Macrobius and Artemidorus that were widely used to interpret specific symbols in dreams and to assess their overall reliability. Swinford develops a key claim about the form of the Somnium as it relates to early science: Kepler relies on a genre that is closely connected to a Ptolemaic, or earth-centered, model of the cosmos as a way of explaining and justifying a model of the cosmos that does not posit the same connections between the individual and the divine that are so important for the Ptolemaic model. In effect, Kepler uses the cosmic dream to describe a universe that cannot lay claim to the same correspondences between an individual’s dream and the order of the cosmos understood within the rules of the genre itself. To that end, Kepler’s Somnium is the first example of science fiction, but the last example of Neoplatonic allegory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the weird and wonderful lesser-known ‘spirit’ entities of ancient Egypt –daemons, the mysterious and often fantastical creatures of the Egyptian ‘Otherworld’ – and the closely related spirits of the dead, which together conjure the excitement of all things otherworldly. Daemons and spirits are generally defined in Egyptology as creatures not of this world, which do not have their own cult centre, and both groups are frequently listed together in protective spells. This volume explores the general nature of daemons and spirits in ancient Egypt and discusses a selection in more detail: it uses artefacts from Wales’s important collection of Egyptian objects at the Egypt Centre at Swansea University, in which are to be found a dwarf daemon with sticking out tongue; several guardian daemons of the Otherworld; creatures who are part snake and part feline; spirits of deceased humans; and a Greek satyr Silenus, companion to the wine god Dionysus.

Book excerpt: In The Divine/Demonic Seven and the Place of Demons in Mesopotamia, Gina Konstantopoulos analyses the Sebettu, a group of seven divine/demonic figures found across a wide range of Mesopotamian textual and artistic sources in Mesopotamia from the late third to first millennium BCE. The Sebettu appeared both as fierce, threatening demons and as divine, protective, figures. These seemingly contradictory qualities worked together, as their martial ferocity facilitated their religious and political role. When used in royal inscriptions, they became fierce warriors attacking the king’s enemies, retaining that demonic nature. This flexibility was not unique to the Sebettu, and this study thus provides a lens through which to examine the place of demons in Mesopotamia as a whole.

Book excerpt: This sumptuously illustrated volume analyzes artists' representations of angels and demons and heaven and hell from the Judeo-Christian tradition and describes how these artistic portrayals evolved over time. As with other books in the Guide to Imagery series, the goal of this volume is to help contemporary art enthusiasts decode the symbolic meanings in the great masterworks of Western Art. The first chapter traces the development of images of the Creation and the Afterworld from descriptions of them in the Scriptures through their evolution in later literary and philosophical works. The following two chapters examine artists' depictions of the two paths that humans may take, the path of evil or the path of salvation, and the punishments or rewards found on each. A chapter on the Judgment Day and the end of the world explores portrayals of the mysterious worlds between life and death and in the afterlife. Finally, the author looks at images of angelic and demonic beings themselves and how they came to be portrayed with the physical attributes--wings, halos, horns, and cloven hooves--with which we are now so familiar. Thoroughly researched by and expert in the field of iconography, Angels and Demons in Art will delight readers with an interest in art or religious symbolism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible portrays King David as an exceptional man and a paragon of godly devotion. But was he? Some scholars deny that he existed at all. Did he? This challenging book examines the written and archaeological evidence critically in an effort to paint an accurate picture of one of the Bible's central figures. Neither defending nor rejecting the traditions about David, Baruch Halpern, a leading scholar of biblical history and the ancient Near East, traces the origins and development of David's persona. Because the biblical text clearly responds to concerns that can only be contemporary with David himself, we can believe that David was both real and a central actor in the historical drama of ancient Israel. Yet at the same time, the written record also shows that contemporaries understood David's character to be much more unsavory than the tradition has hitherto allowed. Halpern digs beneath the layers of tradition to understand David as an individual, as a person. The man he uncovers turns out to have been complex, ambiguous, and--above all--surprising. According to Halpern, the image of David grew over time. He was the founder of the dynasty that perpetuated the texts about him, and they progressively exaggerated his accomplishments. But in the earliest writings David remains a modest figure, as this book shows for the first time. To understand David as a human being, one must keep in mind that he was primarily a politician who operated in a rough-and-tumble environment in which competitors were ready literally to slit throats. Halpern's work raises many provocative questions: Was David an Israelite or a Philistine? Was Solomon really David's son? Did David take the throne ofIsrael by the consent or against the will of the people? How many murders did he commit on his way to the crown? Indeed, was David someone it would have been wise to even invite to dinner? The challenging arguments in "David's Secret Demons are sure to provoke all kinds of discussion among biblical scholars and general readers alike. In addition--a big bonus--Halpern's accessible, at times humorous prose will itself draw readers everywhere into the compelling story of David found between these covers.

Book excerpt: Myths and legends from across the world come together to challenge everything you believe. Heaven’s first rebel, Lucifer, navigates life in the human world after a betrayal by his second-in-command, Abaddon. His plans for revenge are nearly derailed when he finds himself falling for a fiery woman, Lexi Sutton—a witch with a huge secret of her own. With allies that span the mythological spectrum, they prepare to fight to protect the world from Hell’s ambitious new ruler. But neither Lucifer nor Lexi could’ve predicted what awaited them at the end of their journey. The unexpected culmination of a prophecy made ages ago. One that only a certain God of Mischief seems to have all the answers to. Book 1: The Devil’s Delight Lucifer doesn't have time for romance. He's been ousted as King of Hell. After escaping his chains, he retreats to lick his wounds and plan his revenge. The original sinner takes on the guise of a bakery owner, ready to pass the time until he can retake his throne. Lexi Sutton, a witch with mischief magic, only wants to live a normal life with normal relationships. The problem? Getting through dates without her chaotic magic going haywire has proven impossible. She's ready to give up on ever finding love. When Lexi hears about a job opening at a new bakery, she goes for it. How could she know resisting the charms of the panty-melting owner would be so difficult, or that giving in would kick off a chain of events that destiny had been waiting thousands of years to unleash? Will Hell's number one Devil heal her heart, or will finding out his secret identity shatter it? Book 2: Chaotic Creations Lucifer never thought love could burn more than Hellfire. Boston’s newest power couple, Sam and Lexi, are trying to find a balance between their relationship and the looming war that threatens to consume them. Dealing with threatening gods and running a bakery together is putting a strain on their otherwise happy relationship. Add in the chaos brought by the queen of monsters, aka Sam's former girlfriend, and you have a recipe for a disaster. But Lexi has a few tricks up her sleeve to make sure their love survives the devil's ex and the threat of apocalypse, and she's determined to make it work. Maybe she can count on her father, Loki, for help. Book 3: Divine Deviations They stole his heart, and now there’s Hell to pay. Abaddon made a grave mistake when he went after Lexi. Now her father, Loki, has a plan to win Lucifer a powerful ally that could help get her back. But not all is as it seems beyond the Bifrost, and the time for a reckoning has come. Meanwhile, Lexi finds allies in the unlikeliest of places and discovers connections she never imagined. While she carves a path through the nine circles of Hell, she learns more about herself and the icy magic that’s been haunting her for weeks. Lucifer and Lexi are worlds apart, but their bond is strong. Will it be enough to survive what’s coming, or will Lilith finally succeed in tearing them apart permanently?
