Now we of the E.E.F. have entered their preserve in our hundreds of thousands, obtaining admission by the simple expedient of donning a khaki uniform. We too have danced to Shepheards band, and have sentimentalised over the Sphinx by moonlight. The wealthy tourists stayed in Cairo, in Luxor, and in Assouan, doing their sight-seeing from the deck of a comfortable steamer on the Nile. Manyy of us have lived in Cairo or in Alexandria, most of us have seen something of those cities during our local leave, and a fortunate few have visited Luxor and even Assouan. But the steamers ceased running long ago, and now the millionaires haunt the hotels no more. The Egypt we know is very different from the tourist's Egypt. During 1916 most of us were encamped on the bare sands of Sinai, on the unknown Libyan coast, in remote oases far out in the western desert, or in little mosquito-ridden towns on the Nile. In 1917 we marched into Palestine, and spent the summer in the dusty barley-fields outside Gaza, or on the banks of the desolate Wadi Ghuzze. Travel-books describing Egypt and Palestine exist in hundreds, but they dismiss in a few lines the places we know best. The object of this volume is to picture Egypt as the soldier has seen it, from Sollum on the borders of Tripoli to Gaza in Palestine, and from the Mediterranean to the First Cataract at Assouan. It has no military significance, for it only records the trivial doings of a non-combatant who has had the unusual experience of having lived in nearly all the camps occupied at various times by the E.E.F. This book has been prepared under unfavourable conditions, during constant travelling, involving many interruptions. -- p. 5.

The fruits of short service, even though the system had not been worked out in its full integrity, had produced an infantry reserve as great as the whole of the army first sent to the Crimean war, and the regiments which were approaching their turn for foreign service had been raised nearly to the strength as part of the ordinary military system of the country. The arrange ment was not quite complete, and a few months more would have seen the army still better prepared. But it was sufficient for its purpose. The Government had also the good for tune to have as advisers men who had not been opponents of the new organization. The Minister who holds the seals of the War Office has had the good sense and the courage to act on the best military opinion, and the Treasury has been wise enough to perceive that there is no means more calculated to make a war expensive than endeavouring to do it more cheaply than the necessities of the case demand. The idea was preva lent in some quarters that England's duty would be fulfilled if, in conjunc mm, sums. Tion with France, she sent a force to occupy the principal points of the Suez Canal; but from such efforts as these no good results could ever have come, and the Government determined that if a force had to be sent at all the business should be thoroughly done. We have on several occasions laid before our readers the various measures which were taken by the War Office. They have proved to be ample to ensure success except in one particular namely, that of transport. And even there the failure was not due to the arrange ments of the present Government, but to a Constitutional, though exaggerated, safe guard which prevents all English Governments from spending money on military preparations until Parliament has declared in favour of a war bv granting supplies. Most Egyptologists have adopted as correct the statement for which we are indebted to the Byzantine chronographer Syncellus, who says that it was under the king Apophis, in Egyptian A pepi, that Joseph attained the high dignity which is described in Scripture. Apepi is known to us as one of the last, perhaps even the very last, Hyksos king. The Hyksos were foreign invaders, and, in all probability, Mesopotamians, who had been driven out of their country by great events which took place in the valley of the Tigris and the Euphrates. They were a mixed race; the mass of the population seems to have been Semitic, while their rulers, judging from the type Of their faces, such as they are seen on the monuments of Tanis and Bubastis, were of Turanian origin. Undoubtedly their invasion had been marked, as is related by Manetho, by destruction, plunder, and violence, as is usual in Eastern wars; but the Hyksos h'ad soon yielded to the inﬂuence of the more cultivated race over which they reigned. The conquered had by degrees overcome the conquerors, who had adopted the customs, the language, the writing, the civilization of the Egyptians; all except the religion. For, notwithstanding several centuries of dominion, the religion still raised between the Hyksos and their subjects an in separable barrier. They reigned ignoring Ra, meaning in hostility against the Sun-god. Such is the way in which a native queen describes their rule two centuries after the first rebellion against them. As will be seen from my diary I was one of the few Englishmen who, with a strong feeling of esteem and affection for Gordon, disapproved from the first of his mission, suspecting what was indeed the fact, that there was in it a political intrigue connected with the continued occupation of Egypt, and I Was one of the very few who rejoicedat the failure of the relief expedition and the fall of Khartoum. The publication of Lord Cromer's book four years ago, with' its ex aggerated attack on Gordon on these very heads, roused my suspicion and caused me to re-examine the evidence connected with the whole matter, and I speedily discovered that, though Gordon made with out doubt many mistakes in its discharge, the prime responsibility of the mission as one necessarily of war was certainly not his, but that of those who sent him; also, on further examination, that m spite of Lord Cromer' s denial the failure of the mission was principally due to no other than Lord Cromer' 5 self.
