It has little advantage of subject. When the volumes came out, an honest man said, I suppose something happened between the years 1689 and 1697 but what happened I do not know Every one knows now. No period with so little obvious interest will henceforth be so familiarly known. Only a most felicitous and rather curious genius could and would shed such a light on such an age. Ifin the following pages we Seem to cavil and find fault, let it be remembered, that the business of a critic is criticism that it is not his business to be thankful; that he must attempt an estimate rather than a eulogy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Masterpiece Studies in Literature The career of George Eliot, as Mary Ann Evans styled herself when she began to write novels, naturally divides itself into three periods. In the first, she is a young country girl of Derbyshire, conspicuous for her natural talents and her scholarship, yet, apparently destined to lead an uneventful domestic life. In the second, a short period, she is a translator, a critic, an editor, and one of a coterie of progressive and radical thinkers in London. In the third, from 1856 to 1880, a quarter of a century of real glory, she is the author of a series of novels which, when all is told, entitle her to the honor of being one of the very greatest writers of English prose fiction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in the Idyl in German Literature, Vol. 3 The purpose of this dissertation is to set forth the origin, development, and character of the idyl in German literature up to the time of the publication of the Luise by Voss, in 1795. This includes three main parts: 1. idyllic literature in Germany before Opitz; 2. the development of the pastoral idyl depicting an ideal existence and its culmination in Gessner; 3. the reaction which followed, resulting in the realistic idyl of Maler Muller and Voss. In this thesis the term Idyl is used in the sense of a small "Genrebild," complete in itself, which pictures simple life in close communion with nature, as over against the more complex conditions of an advanced civilization, especially of city life. This Genrebild or Idyl may depict real life (as in Theocritus and Voss), or idealized existence in an imaginary Golden Age (as in Gessner). Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Vital Study of Literature: And Other Essays The present volume cannot claim to be a real book. A real book is the product of long and great love for some one inspiring idea. The creative toil may have been intermittent, yet some single preconceived plan has secured in advance the organic unity of the finished work. Now this, that lies before the reader, is but a loose aggregation of lectures committed to paper after the white heat of delivery had cooled, together with several more or less painstaking and extensive reviews, written because of particular concern in a contemporary publication or for the promotion of an espoused cause, each separately composed without any regard whatever to the possible or actual existence of one another. When, however, these detached lectures and essays came to be collected, - all but one of which appeared at the time of their production in some periodical - what surprised not a little their compiler and reviewer was the inherent unity of design and tendency they exhibit. To group them was no difficult task. First were naturally placed four papers in which certain beliefs held and abided by as teacher and lecturer are advocated not unseldom with what may, to the precise and frigid, seem quite inordinate zeal. Book excerpt: An actor, recently divorced, at loose ends in New York; a woman, no less lonely, perhaps even more desperate than the man: they meet by chance in an all-night diner and are drawn to each other on the spot. Roaming the city streets, hitting its late-night dives, dropping another coin into yet another jukebox, these two lost souls struggle to understand what it is that has brought them, almost in spite of themselves, together. They are driven—from moment to moment, from bedroom to bedroom—to improvise the most unexpected of love stories, a tale of suspense where risk alone offers salvation. Georges Simenon was the most popular and prolific of the twentieth century’s great novelists. Three Bedrooms in Manhattan—closely based on the story of his own meeting with his second wife—is his most passionate and revealing work.

Book excerpt: Literature is long. Comics are short. Does Proust get you down? Do you find The Unbearable Lightness of Being simply unbearable? Is The Inferno your own private hell? Do you long to be conversant about classics like Moby Dick, the Bhagavad Gita, Madame Bovary, and, um, Twilight? Bestselling illustrator Lisa Brown (The Airport Book; Baby, Mix Me a Drink) did her homework. Long Story Short offers 100 pithy and skewering three-panel literary summaries, from curriculum classics like Don Quixote, Lord of the Flies, and Jane Eyre to modern favorites like Beloved, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, and Atonement, conveniently organized by subjects including “Love,” “Sex,” “Death,” and “Female Trouble.” Lisa Brown’s Long Story Short is the perfect way to turn a traipse through what your English teacher called “the canon” into a frolic—or to happily cram for the next occasion that requires you to appear bookish and well-read.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Mediaeval Life and Literature After receiving his bachelor's degree he remained another year in New Haven as a graduate student. During that time he devoted himself with increased ardor to the special branches of study in which from the outset he had been interested. In the following year he was made tutor in English. This position he held until 1890, when he was appointed assistant pro fessor of the same subject. At the meeting. Of the Corporation of the University in May, 1893, he was elected by it to the chair of Rhetoric and Belles Lettres. Happily married to a wife of congenial tastes, who speedily learned to sympathize with him in the studies which he had made peculiarly his own, he had every reason to expect a long career of usefulness, which would be attended with distinction to himself and would confer distinction upon the institution with which he was connected. But his health had never been vigorous, and in the very summer vacation fol lowing his appointment a fever, which came upon him almost without warning, and which seemed at first of slight importance, carried him off after an illness that lasted little more than a week. He died on the 25th of July, 1893, at the age of thirty-three. He lies buried at Litchfield. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
