Book excerpt: One of the most forward-looking artists of the eighteenth century, Jean Honoré Fragonard (1732–1806) was a virtuoso draftsman whose works on paper count among the great achievements of his time. This book showcases Fragonard's mastery and experimentation in a range of media, from vivid red chalk to luminous brown wash, as well as etching, watercolor, and gouache. With essays that focus on the role of drawing in his creative process and provide a modern reevaluation of his graphic work, the book offers fresh perspectives on this innovative and independent artist, who began his career in the Rococo era but lived through and adapted to changing times in France, and who chose to leave the more defined path of official patronage in order to work for private clients. Unlike many earlier painters who used drawings primarily as preparatory tools, Fragonard explored their potential as works of art in their own right, ones that permitted him to work with great freedom and allowed his genius to shine. The 100 featured works come from New York collections, public and private, balancing a mix of well-loved masterpieces, new discoveries, and works that have long been out of the public eye. Fragonard: Drawing Triumphant illuminates the approach of a ceaselessly inventive artist whose draftsmanship was at the core of his remarkable body of work.

Book excerpt: "The idea for this exhibition grew out of the desire to present to the Atlanta public an old master exhibition that would complement the new High Museum designed by Richard Meier. . . This exhibition concentrates on the period from 1700 to 1792, when the Revolution toppled the 'ancien régime' and the neo-classical style nascent in Vien's work blossomed into the severe style of David, who, as the portrait shown here makes evident, was himself firmly rooted in the rococo tradition." -- Foreword.

Book excerpt: In the eighteenth century's burgeoning culture of travel and "Grand Tours," Rome was the essential destination. From all over Europe, artists jostled with art lovers and collectors of antiquities, each influencing the other in their respective ambitions. The cult of Rome was particularly strong in France, and this volume looks at more than 100 works by artists such as Hubert Robert, Jean-Honoré Fragonard and Jacques-Louis David, who made pilgrimages to the "Eternal City" and who were decisively influenced by their time there. The works are contextualized across five different sections: the first focuses on the tradition of academic training in Rome; the second explores the depiction of the city's landscape and surrounding countryside; the third looks at Rome and Paris' cultures of art lovers, patrons and artists; the fourth section examines the eighteenth-century conception of antiques; and the final section looks at Rome's annual festivals, and their influence on French artists.

This book was released on 1998 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'What colors! what variety! What richness of objects and ideas!' So the great philosopher and art critic Diderot wrote in 1761 about Francois Boucher's enormous painting Halt at the Spring, exhibited that year in Paris and the Salon of the Royal Academy. This is but one of the nearly 90 paintings included in French Paintings in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston: Volume 1, Artists born before 1790. Incorporated in this volume are the paintings of the sixteenth through the first part of the nineteenth centuries. In addition to Boucher, such notable artists as Poussin, Claude, Le Sueur, Largilliere, Greuze, Watteau, Vigee-Lebrun, Lancret, Baron Gros and Prud'hon are included. The MFA's French painting collection is one of America's greatest, and this catalogue marks the first scholarly publication of many of its highlights. Each work is fully illustrated (many in color), and each entry includes a full bibliography and provenance as well as text discussing the work's significance. An introductory essay also provides background on the history of the collection's formation from the acquisition of the Boucher in 1871 to the present day.
