Book excerpt: Marion Eleanor Zimmer Bradley (1930 - 1999) was an American author of fantasy, historical fantasy, science fiction, and science fantasy novels, and is best known for the Arthurian fiction novel The Mists of Avalon, and the Darkover series. Many critics have noted a feminist perspective in her writing. Her most famous single novel may be The Mists of Avalon, a retelling of the Camelot legend from the point of view of Morgaine and Gwenhwyfar. It grew into a series of books and, like the Darkover series, the later novels are written with or by other authors and have continued to appear since Bradley's death. Do as he says. Don't go home, Dad." In a far future space travel is common, but the secret of traveling faster than the speed of light is jealously guarded by a non-human race, the Lhari. Lhari are the species that is color-blind in the sense that everything they see is monochromatic. Book excerpt: SUDDEN PANIC It was a week before the Lhari ship went into warp-drive, and all that time young Bart Steele had stayed in his cabin. He was so bored with his own company that the Mentorian medic was a welcome sight when he came to prepare him for cold-sleep, The Mentorian paused, needle in hand. Do you wish to be wakened for the time we shall spend in each of the three star systems, sir? You can, of course, be given enough drug to keep you in cold-sleep until we reach your destination. Bart felt tempted -- he wanted very much to see the other star systems. But he couldn't risk meeting other passengers. The needle went into his arm. In sudden panic, he realized he was helpless. The ship would touch down on three worlds, and on any of them the Lhari might have his description, or his alias He could be taken off, unconscious, and might never wake up He tried to move, to protest, but he couldn't. There was a freezing moment of intense cold and then nothing. . . . * Marion Zimmer Bradley was born in Albany, New York and before she started her writing career she was a file clerk, music teacher, and a carnival performer. Her hobbies are reading science fiction novels, going to the opera and listening to folk music. In addition to having written a number of other books, she has written more than thirty magazine stories and articles and has been writing professionally for the past ten years.

It is a peaceful reign, held by compact and not by conquest. Again and again, when rebellion threatens the Terran Peace, the natives of the rebellious world have turned against their own people and sided with the men of Terra; not from fear, but from a sense of dedication. There has never been open war. The battle for these worlds is fought in the minds of a few men who stand between worlds; bound to one world by interest, loyalties and allegiance; bound to the other by love. Such a world is Wolf. Such a man was Race Cargill of the Terran Secret Service. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They asked me about it, of course, before I boarded the starship. All through the Western sector of the Galaxy, few rules are stricter than the one dividing human from nonhuman, and the little Captain of the Vesta-he was Terran, too, and proud in the black leather of the Empire's merchant-man forces-hemmed and hawed about it, as much as was consistent with a spaceman's dignity. "You see, Miss Vargas," he explained, not once but as often as I would listen to him, "this is not, strictly speaking, a passenger ship at all. Our charter is only to carry cargo. But, under the terms of our franchise, we are required to transport an occasional passenger, from the more isolated planets where there is no regular passenger service. Our rules simply don't permit us to discriminate, and the Theradin reserved a place on this ship for our last voyage." He paused, and re-emphasized, "We have only the one passenger cabin, you see. We're a cargo ship and we are not allowed to make any discrimination between our passengers." He looked angry about it. Unfortunately, I'd run up against that attitude before. Some Terrans won't travel on the same ship with nonhumans even when they're isolated in separate ends of the ship. I understood his predicament, better than he thought. The Theradin seldom travel in space. No one could have foreseen that Haalvordhen, the Theradin from Samarra, who had lived on the forsaken planet of Deneb for eighteen of its cycles, would have chosen this particular flight to go back to its own world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Armchair Fiction presents extra large editions of classic science fiction double novels. The first novel is "Cry Chaos" by well-known science fiction author, Dwight V. Swain. Gadar, the dark star, had hurled into the solar system and settled into an orbit around the sun over a thousand years ago. It was no longer really a star. It had collapsed upon itself over the eons and had become what was essentially a wondering, dark planet, virtually unseeable to all but the trained astronomical eye. But Gadar and its strange race of silver-haired people held a dread secret that the mighty Gar Shane had to discover before Earth and the rest of the solar system were destroyed. Shane was the leader of the warrior-like people of the asteroid belt, the Chonyas. But when he and his stalwart crew found themselves falling easily into the clutches of a notorious interplanetary drug-dealer, Shane knew that something far more powerful was behind it. Aided by a beautiful slave, he followed the trail from one of Jupiter's satellites all the way to Mars, and finally to Gadar itself, where he was tempted by the beautiful silver-haired Kyrsis, who offered him power and love to betray Earth--and death if he refused! The second novel is Marion Zimmer Bradley's "The Door Through Space." Across half the galaxy the Terran Empire maintained its sovereignty with the consent of the governed. It was a peaceful reign, held by compact and not by conquest. Again and again, when rebellion threatened the Terran Peace, the natives of the rebellious world turned against their own people and sided with the men of Terra; not from fear, but from a sense of dedication. It is a tranquil rule, held by minimized and not by triumph. Over and over, when disobedience compromises the Terran Harmony, the locals of the defiant world have betrayed their own kin and favored the men of Land; not from dread, but rather from a feeling of devotion. There has never been open conflict. The fight for these universes is battled in the personalities of a couple of men who remain between universes; bound to one world by interest, loyalties, and loyalty; bound to the next by adoration. A particularly world is Wolf. Such a man was Race Cargill of the Terran Secret Help.
