Her own sisters. The weaver, Lachesis, has fallen in love with a mortal and is terrified her other siblings will find out. What is thicker than blood? Could it be love… or does family and duty triumph over everything else? Who is the mysterious stranger that has captured her mind and soul? Even Lachesis isn’t sure. She hopes the inflexible one, Atropos, never finds out or she will cut his life cord away. Her other sister, Klotho, will rewind the thread and make it seem like he never existed. Does Klotho already know and has been keeping quiet, or has she been neglecting her duties, too? Despite the danger, Lachesis plans to see him again tonight and steal a few moments away with her beloved. But her heart is in flux. Her lover said he has something important to ask of her. What could it be? Will he finally reveal his true identity… or will Lachesis discover something she wishes she had never known?

His quest for authentic experience leads him to the throes of addiction, virtuous recovery, and disenchanted notoriety as a public menace. When his attempts at courtship and romance falter, he inadvertently becomes the target of a team of elderly assassins--one blind, one deaf, and the other mute. Alongside his impulsive young office mate Roland, who chucks everything in the mistaken belief that he has won the lottery, Henrik becomes entangled with a pair of star-crossed, disenchanted lovebirds named Bonnie and Clyde who now want to kill each other. The comic hysteria reaches a crescendo in which Henrik finally realizes his purpose on earth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The colonialist West has spoken for New Mexico since 1540 when Francisco Vasquez de Coronado traveled to Acoma Pueblo in his search for the legendary cities of gold. With the Spanish incursion, followed fifty-six years later by the first English-speaking colonists in New Mexico, began the representation of New Mexico from an outsider's perspective. The colonial West imagined itself to hold central claims to knowledge, so it knew its peripheries only as it encountered and articulated their presence to itself. This Western narrative, based on an imagined Western privilege to foundational or platonic knowledge, has become the dominant Euro-American discourse through which New Mexico has come to be known. The comparative study of this collection of travel and contact narratives traces the enforcement of--and resistance to--the Western myth of the Euro-American and European as normative, as well as the Hispanic and the native as Other. The author ably introduces the platonic quest as a new unifying thread that links each of these travel narratives to his argument that identity and claims to knowledge may be tested, recovered, or created in movement within New Mexico. The platonic journey has mostly been understood as an intellectual journey toward truth. This study expands upon the platonic journey to show that it may also, like the quest, be played out in geographical space. Travel Narratives from New Mexico will be a very valuable resource for students and scholars of literature, especially of the American Southwest and travel theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, the author argues that literacy is a complex combination of various skills, not just the ability to read and write: the technology of writing, the encoding and decoding of text symbols, the interpretation of meaning, the retrieval and display systems which organize how meaning is stored and memory. The book explores the relationship between literacy, orality and memory in classical antiquity, not only from the point of view of antiquity, but also from that of modern cognitive psychology. It examines the contemporary as well as the ancient debate about how the writing tools we possess interact and affect the product, why they should do so and how the tasks required of memory change and develop with literacy's increasing output and evoking technologies.
