Book excerpt: This first volume in a three-volume exposition of Shubik's vision of "mathematical institutional economics" explores a one-period approach to economic exchange with money, debt, and bankruptcy. This is the first volume in a three-volume exposition of Martin Shubik's vision of "mathematical institutional economics"--a term he coined in 1959 to describe the theoretical underpinnings needed for the construction of an economic dynamics. The goal is to develop a process-oriented theory of money and financial institutions that reconciles micro- and macroeconomics, using as a prime tool the theory of games in strategic and extensive form. The approach involves a search for minimal financial institutions that appear as a logical, technological, and institutional necessity, as part of the "rules of the game." Money and financial institutions are assumed to be the basic elements of the network that transmits the sociopolitical imperatives to the economy. Volume 1 deals with a one-period approach to economic exchange with money, debt, and bankruptcy. Volume 2 explores the new economic features that arise when we consider multi-period finite and infinite horizon economies. Volume 3 will consider the specific role of financial institutions and government, and formulate the economic financial control problem linking micro- and macroeconomics.

Book excerpt: I develop information-based theoretical frameworks to (i) explain empirical patterns found in the finance literature, and (ii) provide empirical and policy implications related to recent changes in the technology and the market structure of financial markets. The first chapter explains how the over-the-counter market can coexist with easily acces- sible exchanges, and examines the US Dodd-Frank Act and the EU's MiFID II. The second chapter explains the recent trend of higher market quality, and reconciles the finding that high frequency traders increase liquidity with the finding that the HFTs reduce institutional traders' profits. The third chapter analyzes how transparency due to blockchain adoption may affect market quality.

Book excerpt: Technology has deeply influenced the evolution of the auditing profession. New technologies such as Industry 4.0, blockchain, and apps, are expected to dramatically change the both current business model and society at large. The audit profession may need to adjust its existing paradigm in order to adapt to such a rapidly changing environment. Moreover, new audit approaches relying on advanced technologies could be used to improve assurance quality. This dissertation consists of three essays that explore the potential impact of emerging technologies on audit domain. The study contributes to the auditing literature by introducing Audit 4.0, blockchain, and apps to audit research, analyzing their potential applications in audit procedures, and proposing new paradigms that leverage those technologies to improve audit quality. The first essay foresees the impact of the fourth industrial revolution on the auditing profession, imagineers the use of new technologies promoted by Industry 4.0 for audit purposes, and identifies challenges in the transformation towards the new generation of auditing: "Audit 4.0". The second essay studies how blockchain technology could contribute to the accounting and auditing profession. Blockchain is the most disruptive information technology in recent years. Although the use of blockchain has been studied in many fields such as banking, financial markets, and government service, its application to accounting and assurance remains under-explored. This chapter discusses how blockchain could enable a real-time, reliable, and transparent accounting ecosystem, and how it could transform current auditing practices resulting in a more precise, timely, automatic assurance system. The third essay explores the use of apps to augment existing audit procedures. This essay first proposes a framework that provides guidance on app development and use. Based on this framework, this study designs a planning system that integrates apps into audit plans. Further, an intelligent app recommender system is designed to enable less experienced auditors to perform analytical audits. Finally, the planning system and the app recommender, together with other intelligent systems, are combined to create a new auditing paradigm: app-based auditing.

Firstly, is it possible to determine the type of institutions that are more conducive to growth? Secondly, did the financial markets play a key role in securing the growth and prosperity of the US during the 1990s? A third issue is the effect of the recent changes in the organization of the financial markets. The last issue addressed relates to the effects on investment and growth of the different corporate governance structures that prevail in the various countries. By exploring the differences between the financial markets in the US and Europe this book helps the reader assess the role of financial markets in securing investment and growth.
