Chapter 1 investigates how the language of instruction in education policies has evolved in Pakistan and why the medium of instruction still remains a contested terrain. The historical record demonstrates the official effort to supplant English with Urdu as the language of instruction in higher education has failed. Indeed, the demand for the use of English in education has moved beyond the elite. The chapter argues that the struggle over language masks a conflict over access to resources, but it is difficult to shift the use of language. Chapter 2 investigates how Pakistani higher education students from different social strata act within the context of a game which allows for cooperation and punishment. We find that both female and male madrassa students are the most generous players. Moreover, we find more gender and social consciousness in men than women when deciding to penalize or not. This research helps us break from social stereotypes which often depict lower income madrassa students as particularly intolerant of other social groups. Chapter 3 aims to learn more about how the lives of enrolled children is different from non-students. Findings show that while girls and boys are substituting unpaid and paid work respectively for the gender neutral activity of learning, there is no evidence to show that school enrollment changes the patterns of gender roles as girls continue to perform more care work and public arenas remain a heavily masculinized space. These three essays indicate that educational institutions in Pakistan more often reflect social inequality than reduce it. It is true that the daily activities of male and female students are more similar than the activities of non-students. Nevertheless, future research on the impact of Pakistani education should be aware of the underlying inequality of Pakistani society.

In Religion, Community, and Education, Alam uses a spatial approach and multilayered analytical framework to understand educational disparities in schooling between the Hindus and Muslims in Bihar. The study draws upon national-level data as well as focused fieldwork carried out in Bihar's Patna and Purnia districts. This book highlights the larger historical trajectories that have shaped educational development as well as the forms of disparities therein vis-à-vis the minorities in India. It contends that the relative educational backwardness of the Muslims reflects underlying socio-economic patterns that are often overlooked. Thus, the Muslims should not be seen merely as homogeneous socio-cultural aggregates.

Book excerpt: This is an ethnographic study of the Vidya Bharati chain of schools in India which are run by a Hindu nationalist organization called the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The first study of its kind, this volume is an important narrative on the role and impact of textbooks in modern India. Despite having limited resources (they are run on a tight budget) and being based on a radical ideology that derives from a 'Hindu' nationalist agenda, the Vidya Bharati schools have achieved considerable success in the free market of private education and have grown to over 12,000 schools within 40 years. They are an important example of the interlinkage between ideology and nationalism in contemporary India. The author analyses school structure, curriculum, teaching quality, institutional goals, and ideology in an effort to identify reasons behind Vidya Bharati's success and to show through his field research that a combined strategy of pragmatism blended with ideology has allowed the schools to become highly sought-after. This analysis then asks broader questions about the failures of the public education system in India.

Book excerpt: Over the last several decades, life in Lahore has been undergoing profound transformations, from rapid and uneven urbanization to expanding state institutions and informal economies. What do these transformations look like if viewed from the lens of waste materials and the lives of those who toil with them? In Lahore, like in many parts of Pakistan and South Asia, waste workers—whether municipal employees or informal laborers—are drawn from low- or noncaste (Dalit) groups and dispose the collective refuse of the city's 11 million inhabitants. Bringing workers into contact with potentially polluting materials reinforces their stigmatization and marginalization, and yet, their work allows life to go on across Lahore and beyond. This historical and ethnographic account examines how waste work has been central to organizing and transforming the city of Lahore—its landscape, infrastructures, and life—across historical moments, from the colonial period to the present. Building upon conversations about changing configurations of work and labor under capitalism, and utilizing a theoretical framework of reproduction, Waqas H. Butt traces how forms of life in Punjab, organized around caste-based relations, have become embedded in infrastructures across Pakistan, making them crucial to numerous processes unfolding at distinct scales. Life Beyond Waste maintains that processes reproducing life in a city like Lahore must be critically assessed along the lines of caste, class, and religion, which have been constitutive features of urbanization across South Asia.
