É Of course I love her best Of all, he had said. When he told her of it She had been so overcome that she had wept in her despair; - had wept in his presence. She had declared to him her secret, - that it had been her intention to become his wife, and then he had rejected her! It had all been shame, and sorrow, and disappointment to her. And She could not but remember that there had been a moment when she might have secured him by a word. A. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Duke's Children, Vol. 1 of 3: A Novel Then, in the early spring of 187 they came back to England, having persistently carried out their project, at any rate in regard to time. Lord Gerald, the younger son, was at once sent up to Trinity. For the eldest son a seat was to be found in the House of Commons, and the fact that a dissolution of Parliament was expected served to prevent any prolonged sojourn abroad. Lady Mary Palliser was at that time nineteen, and her entrance into the world was to be her mother's great care and great delight. In March they spent a few days in London, and then went down to Matching Priory. When she left town the Duchess was complaining of cold, sore throat, and debility. A week after their arrival at Matching she was dead. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Duke School of Religion Bulletin, Vol. 3 "The Palestine Report will rank among the great State papers of our time. Its proposals are a profound disappointment to many; but no one can question the honesty and courage with which the Royal Commission have gone about their task, or the ability with which they have presented their case."* This quotation from the New Statesman and Nation is repeated in Current History for September 1937; it bears another repetition here. Seldom indeed does British officialdom publish plain facts, containing an admission of failure, for all the world to read. I had originally intended to write about "The Present Situation in Palestine"; but after realizing that it has been more than two years since I left the unfortunate Holy Land, I deemed it safer to comment on the Royal Commission's Report and current newspaper dispatches, instead of trying to guess what people in Palestine are saying and thinking at the moment. Too much guesswork has already been published about Palestine, both ancient and modern. One must try to be starkly realistic, following the good example of the Royal Commission. However, the fact that in October 1933 my family and I had to flee from the vicinity of the Damascus Gate in Jerusalem upon seeing and hearing the exchange of shots between British soldiers and natives still gives us memories that aid a vivid appreciation of what is going on. The press every now and then heralds more "Conflict in the Land of Peace" (this being the title of a recent pamphlet by a Palestinian Arab). Most recently (January, 1938), J.L. Starkey, the well-known archaeologist and excavator of Tell ed-Duweir, the Biblical Lachish, has been seized and shot dead in cold blood. As he was about to be shot, Starkey protested that he was a Britisher and a Christian, but that plea did no good. At the time of my arrival in Palestine in 1932 it would have probably brought instant release. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Duke's Marriage, Vol. 2 of 3 The Frenchman's apartments were a bedroom and Sitting-room, furnished without regard to luxury or even to comfort, and smelling rankly of caporal tobacco. In the Sitting-room there was hardly space to stir, SO encumbered was it with books and Old newspapers. The books were set up in columns SO lofty that the topmost volumes were always lurching as though medi tating to take headers on to the carpet, but not daring because Of the height; and as, when M. Grachard wanted a book, it was his custom to pull it out Of the pile without taking the trouble to lift those above it, the ruins Of broken columns were to be seen in every direction. It was impossible to enter the room in the dark without knocking something over, and unsafe to leave it with a fire or light burning therein, lest some Of the papers scattered about the floor should set first the room and then the house into a blaze. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Charles the Bold, Vol. 3: Duke of Burgundy When the spectators on the Rigi have watched successive groups of giant Alps rise out of the night, and receive on their icy brows warm kisses from the radiant dawn, the eye turns in quest of further marvels to the opposite quarter of the panorama, across table-lands and plains dotted with towns and lakes, and bounded by the distant chain of the Jura. But there the horizon offers none of the grand and entrancing aspects of a mountain range. That long, straight, dusky line, with no variety of form or play of color, belongs not to the picture, but to the frame.
