Book excerpt: The paper presents results of analysis and experiment bearing on three-dimensional effects in hypersonic interaction, with emphasis on a sharp-edged rectangular corner intersection aligned with the flow and a sharp-edged plate of finite span. A powerful tool for dealing with such complex problems is the 'merged-layer approximation' which obviates the need for complicated matching procedures in many instances of importance although numerical computation is required. This type of flow, in which various elements are strongly coupled and even merged, is shown to have features in common with low-speed three-dimensional boundary layers such as those along an interior corner or along the edge of a quarter-infinite plate. In the low speed cases the essential viscous-inviscid interaction coupling enters through the weak, Reynolds-number dependent, displacements of the inviscid flow which must be taken into account even to lowest order. The attendant analytics and numerics are in many respects more difficult to deal with than those of the hypersonic counterparts. (Author).

Book excerpt: Viscous flow is treated usually in the frame of boundary-layer theory and as two-dimensional flow. Books on boundary layers give at most the describing equations for three-dimensional boundary layers, and solutions often only for some special cases. This book provides basic principles and theoretical foundations regarding three-dimensional attached viscous flow. Emphasis is put on general three-dimensional attached viscous flows and not on three-dimensional boundary layers. This wider scope is necessary in view of the theoretical and practical problems to be mastered in practice. The topics are weak, strong, and global interaction, the locality principle, properties of three-dimensional viscous flow, thermal surface effects, characteristic properties, wall compatibility conditions, connections between inviscid and viscous flow, flow topology, quasi-one- and two-dimensional flows, laminar-turbulent transition and turbulence. Though the primary flight speed range is that of civil air transport vehicles, flows past other flying vehicles up to hypersonic speeds are also considered. Emphasis is put on general three-dimensional attached viscous flows and not on three-dimensional boundary layers, as this wider scope is necessary in view of the theoretical and practical problems that have to be overcome in practice. The specific topics covered include weak, strong, and global interaction; the locality principle; properties of three-dimensional viscous flows; thermal surface effects; characteristic properties; wall compatibility conditions; connections between inviscid and viscous flows; flow topology; quasi-one- and two-dimensional flows; laminar-turbulent transition; and turbulence. Detailed discussions of examples illustrate these topics and the relevant phenomena encountered in three-dimensional viscous flows. The full governing equations, reference-temperature relations for qualitative considerations and estimations of flow properties, and coordinates for fuselages and wings are also provided. Sample problems with solutions allow readers to test their understanding.

Book excerpt: A study has been made of transpiration cooling of typical hypersonic re-entry configurations with a primary emphasis on experimental data acquisition, although some limited analytical and numerical support studies have been undertaken. The experiments have been conducted in the hypersonic flow region, under zero and non-zero angle of attack conditions, and covering the range in Reynolds numbers required to obtain laminar, transitional, and turbulent data. Numerical and analytical studies have been performed of viscous and interacting viscous-inviscid flows with application to 3D boundary layers, wing-body configurations, and internal flow problems. In this area, the development of numerical techniques and analytical tools is of primary significance although the application of these methods to practical problems of interest has also been accomplished. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental and computational study of the impact of a vortex with a body oriented normal to the vortex axis was performed. Particular focus was placed on understanding characteristics of the secondary vorticity ejected from the body and the interaction of the secondary vorticity with the primary vortex. Since both onset of boundary layer separation and the form of the secondary vorticity structures are sensitive to variation of the velocity normal to the body axis, the effect of normal velocity on vortex-body interaction was carefully examined. The physical features of the flow evolution were categorized in terms of an impact parameter and a thickness parameter, which respectively represent ratios of velocity and length scales associated with the vortex to those associated with the flow in the absence of the vortex. Experiments were performed using a combination of laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) flow visualization and particle-image velocimetry (PIV) in a water tank to examine the form of the secondary vorticity structures with both "high" and "low" values of the impact parameter for normal vortex interaction with a circular cylinder and with a thin blade. A new type of Lagrangian vorticity method based on a tetrahedral mesh was developed and applied to compute the secondary vorticity evolution during vortex-cylinder interaction. Computations were also performed for model problems to examine in detail wrapping of a vortex loop around a columnar vortex and impulsive cutting of a columnar vortex with finite axial flow.

Book excerpt: The objective of this research is the basic theoretical investigation of three-dimensional pressure, skin friction, and heat transfer disturbances in both laminar and turbulent boundary layer flows including viscous-inviscid interaction effects, separation, and reattachment. A sound understanding of these phenomena is required in modern aerodynamic design analyses of high-speed flight vehicles. The primary emphasis in these studies has been to seek a basic physical understanding of the underlying fluid behavior by means of analytically-oriented methods; in this way, the results can be used to guide and interpret concurrent experimental and computationally-oriented investigations. This inquiry has focused on two parallel paths of investigation: three-dimensional, viscous-inviscid interaction phenomena within turbulent boundary layers in supersonic flow due to impinging swept shock and/or 3-D surface deflections, and streamwise vortex-disturbance mechanisms within laminar or turbulent boundary layers that are either separated or attached.

Book excerpt: Consideration of three-dimensional inverse boundary-layer codes to threat separated flow is motivated by the success enjoyed by two-dimensional inverse boundary-layer codes. Indeed, as was first shown by Catherall and Mangler, the separation singularity which occurs in the direct mode (integrating the boundary-layer equations with a prescribed inviscid outer edge velocity uinv) can be eliminated by using an inverse mode. With an inverse mode some other quantity such as displacement thickness is prescribed, and the outer edge velocity which we call uvis is generated by the boundary-layer calculation. A coupling scheme must then be devised to insure that velocity uinv from the outer inviscid flow agrees with uvis from the boundary layer.

Book excerpt: A viscous inviscid interaction method for three dimensional flows, in which the partially parabolic Reynolds equations are coupled with an inviscid flow solution procedure in an interactive and iterative manner, is applied to two simple three dimensional bodies for which experimental data are available for comparison. The relative merits of interactive and global solution procedures are evaluation by comparing the viscous inviscid interaction solutions with noninteractive large domain solutions of only the viscous flow equations. Both methods yield satisfactory results, although the interaction solutions are found to be computationally more efficient for the cases considered.
