Book excerpt: For machine vision and for graphical representation of real objects in a computer environment, the three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the image of a real object has become a key technique. A few methods such as range finding, which use laser scanners, computer tomography, based on CTR or MRI machines, computational stereo, etc. were developed. Computational stereo is broadly defined as the recovery of 3D characteristics of a scene from a series of images obtained from different points in the three dimensional (Euclidean) space. In this thesis, a new algorithm and system is introduced and developed for the 3D reconstruction of the images of real objects from two 2D images required with two cameras. The algorithm is based on a new matching method, a new procedure for the determination of the fundamental matrix used in stereo vision, and a new technique for stereo fusion. The novelty of the matching procedure, and of the determination of the camera alignment, consists of the projection of a structured light pattern on the real object, the pattern being created using a pseudo-random encoded mesh (PRBA) (34). The novelty of the stereo fusion algorithm consists of the application of the dynamic programming principle (DP) (5) (27) using a cost function which contains the information obtained from the list of matched points. It is also proposed to use an autoregressive (AR) modeling technique for calculating the stereo disparity of each pixel of the two images. The autoregressive filter helps the DP part of the algorithm to calculate the disparity of the pixels when the above pixels are occluded. The above proposed methods offer three distinctive advantages over a conventional stereo system: (1) It easily generates a list of matching points. (2) It adds structure to an object without textures. (3) It is less computational intensive.

Structured light technology has been widely used in 3D imaging, recognition and measurement, indicating great industrial and commercial value. In this thesis, a simple and robust technique of Moiré topography with single-image capture and incorporating digital filtering along with a four-step digitally implemented phase-shifting method is introduced for 3D surface mapping. Feature details in the order of tens to hundreds of microns can be achieved using interferometrically generated structured light to illuminate the object surface. The feasibility of this technique is verified experimentally, and applications to metallic surfaces are demonstrated. Next, a simple non-interferometric incoherent light propagation model is introduced to perform 3D profiling of transparent objects with typical thicknesses in the order of mm to cm by analyzing the distorted captured image behind the object. A two-dimensional (2D) cosine fringe is used as the incident reference image, whose periodicity is markedly altered by the shape of the object. By monitoring the local change in the period, the surface profile is simulated and optimized to achieve minimal error with experimental data to determine the final morphology. Besides, core principles of ghost imaging and optical scan holography are also discussed.

Book excerpt: Computational methodologies of signal processing and imaging analysis, namely considering 2D and 3D images, are commonly used in different applications of the human society. For example, Computational Vision systems are progressively used for surveillance tasks, traf?c analysis, recognition process, inspection p- poses, human-machine interfaces, 3D vision and deformation analysis. One of the main characteristics of the Computational Vision domain is its int- multidisciplinary. In fact, in this domain, methodologies of several more fundam- tal sciences, such as Informatics, Mathematics, Statistics, Psychology, Mechanics and Physics are usually used. Besides this inter-multidisciplinary characteristic, one of the main reasons that contributes for the continually effort done in this domain of the human knowledge is the number of applications in the medical area. For instance, it is possible to consider the use of statistical or physical procedures on medical images in order to model the represented structures. This modeling can have different goals, for example: shape reconstruction, segmentation, registration, behavior interpretation and simulation, motion and deformation analysis, virtual reality, computer-assisted therapy or tissue characterization. The main objective of the ECCOMAS Thematic Conferences on Computational Vision and Medical Image Processing (VIPimage) is to promote a comprehensive forum for discussion on the recent advances in the related ?elds trying to id- tify widespread areas of potential collaboration between researchers of different sciences.

Book excerpt: This volume presents the articles accepted for the 8th International Conference on Computer Analysis of Images and Patterns (CAIP’99), held in Ljubljana, Slovenia, 1{3 September 1999. The CAIP series of conferences started 14 years ago in Berlin. The series served initially as a forum for meetings between sci- tists from Western and Eastern-bloc countries. Political circumstances have changed dramatically since the inception of the conference and such contacts are fortunately no longer subject to abstrade. While CAIP conferences are still rooted in Central Europe, they now attract participants from all over the world. We received 120 submissions, which went through a thorough double blind review process by the program committee members who, had the option of - signing additional reviewers. The nal program consists of 47 oral and 27 poster presentations, with authors from 25 di erent countries. The proceedings also include 2 of the 5 invited lectures given at the conference. In the name of the steering committee we would like to thank the program committee members and the additional reviewers for their time and e orts. Our thanks also go to the authors for their cooperation and meeting of all deadlines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New textbooks at all levels of chemistry appear with great regularity. Some fields like basic biochemistry, organic reaction mechanisms, and chemical thermody namics are well represented by many excellent texts, and new or revised editions are published sufficiently often to keep up with progress in research. However, some areas of chemistry, especially many of those taught at the graduate level, suffer from a real lack of up-to-date textbooks. The most serious needs occur in fields that are rapidly changing. Textbooks in these subjects usually have to be written by scientists actually involved in the research which is advancing the field. It is not often easy to persuade such individuals to set time aside to help spread the knowledge they have accumulated. Our goal, in this series, is to pinpoint areas of chemistry where recent progress has outpaced what is covered in any available textbooks, and then seek out and persuade experts in these fields to produce relatively concise but instructive introductions to their fields. These should serve the needs of one semester or one quarter graduate courses in chemistry and biochemistry. In some cases, the availability of texts in active research areas should help stimulate the creation of new courses.

Book excerpt: These proceedings contain papers presented at the 8th Discrete Geometry for Computer Imagery conference, held 17-19, March 1999 at ESIEE, Marne-la- Vall ee. The domains of discrete geometry and computer imagery are closely related. Discrete geometry provides both theoretical and algorithmic models for the p- cessing, analysis and synthesis of images; in return computer imagery, in its variety of applications, constitutes a remarkable experimentational eld and is a source of challenging problems. The number of returning participants, the arrival each year of contributions from new laboratories and new researchers, as well as the quality and originality of the results have contributed to the success of the conference and are an - dication of the dynamism of this eld. The DGCI has become one of the major conferences related to this topic, including participating researchers and la- ratories from all over the world. Of the 41 papers received this year, 24 have been selected for presentation and 7 for poster sessions. In addition to these, four invited speakers have contributed to the conference. The site of Marne-la-Vall ee, just 20 min away from Paris, is particularly we- suited to hold the conference. Indeed, as a newly built city, it showcases a great amount of modern creative architecture, whose pure lines and original shapes o er a favorable context for the topic of Geometry.
