Book excerpt: Using finite element methods and field tests, an extensive study on selected steel pipes is devised for the Integrated Pipeline Project in Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas. The project integrates Tarrant Regional Water District (TRWD) existing pipelines to the Dallas system along 150 miles. Field test of buried pipes, monitoring the pipe in different trench conditions is extremely valuable in predicting the displacement of the pipe during construction stages and during its lifetime. The field instrumentation monitors the circular displacements and strains of a buried steel pipe with an outside diameter (O.D.) of 84 in. and 0.375 in. thickness in three different trench profiles using controlled low strength material. For the first case, the trench width is the O.D. plus 36 in., and CLSM is used as embedment up to 30% of the O.D. In the second case, the trench width is the O.D. plus 36 in., and CLSM is used as embedment up to 70% of the O.D. In the third case, the trench width is O.D. plus 18 in., and CSLM is used as embedment up to 70% of the O.D. From the CLSM to the top of the pipe, ordinary local soil is used and compacted to 95% standard proctor density. Approximately 5ft. of backfilling is added for all cases. For pipe structural monitoring, strain gages are attached inside and outside of the pipe to obtain the circumferential strain, and displacement transducers are installed to record both vertical and horizontal diameter displacement. The deflections of the steel pipes are effectively measured in each of the construction stages: the CLSM embedment, the soil compaction, and during the load of the 5ft. soil on top of the pipe. In addition, the buried pipes are monitored for long term deflection (around 350 days). The tests provide guidance for the finite element modeling and are an important study in predicting the structural performance of buried steel pipes. The finite element analysis developed is a three dimensional (3D) nonlinear finite element model of steel pipe coupled with CLSM and compacted soil. The finite element model consists of the pipe and soil interaction during the staged construction of embedment and backfill. The geometry of the model is created based on the pipe's undeformed shape. Due to the effect of the loads during staged construction (i.e. subsequent layers of soil being added as embedment and/or backfill), the geometry of the pipe distored for each layer of soil around it. The model also consideres the at rest lateral pressure and the lateral effect of soil compaction on the pipe-soil structure. Different trench conditions are modeled by varying in the in-situ soil stiffness for the trench wall, and trench width. The finite element model developed simulates the load-deformation results of a buried steel pipe in different trench conditions and was verified by the field test results. After developing the nonlinear finite element model for steel pipes and verifying the results with field test, the model can be used to predict pipe performance under varying backfill and loading conditions. All parameters that are modified in the models are part of the scope of the pipeline project, and are field situations that might be observed in the construction of the Integrated Pipeline.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pipeline systems are widely used to transport water, sewage, oil, natural gas, and other valuable fluids. The buried pipelines can run over long distances in different soil behaviours and climate conditions. Pipelines should be designed in such a way that they remain functional even when they are subjected to high-intensity soil movements, excessive fluid flows, and different loading conditions. This thesis will illustrate the main parameters that cause failure in buried pipelines, starting by giving an overview of the piping system, that includes pipeline materials, pipeline design procedure, soil properties and pipeline interaction, soil and traffic loading on underground pipelines (external loadings), Fluid flow loads on underground pipeline (internal loadings), Finite element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis on a pipeline. The thesis will discuss in detail the phenomena of fluid-structure interaction, and a case study of a T-pipe will be analyzed from a fluid-structure analysis perspective. The effect of branch inlet velocity, main inlet velocity, diameter ratio, merging angle, and temperature of the working fluid will be studied. The second part of this work will look at the effect of applied external loadings on a buried pipeline using different boundary conditions. Finally, a simulation model was created to analyze both case scenarios of the fluidstructure interaction with applied external loadings on a buried pipeline under selected conditions. The created model could be used and altered to predict pipe deformation under user-defined conditions. Parameters to be changed that would affect the buried pipe deformation including the soil properties, the pipe material, applied loadings forces, applied loadings location, boundary conditions, fluid properties, fluid flow conditions, thermal conditions, pipe geometry, and the buried pipe location.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Buried pipes are safe and economical method of transporting natural resources. Failure of these infrastructures poses significant damage to the environment and people safety. Permanent ground deformation is one of the major causes of buried pipe failure. It was reported that axial force on pipes buried in dense granular material obtained using the current guidelines can be significantly smaller than the measured values. Standard finite element methods are known to be efficient in studying soil-structure interaction problems, however, modeling soil-structure interaction involving granular material and large deformation is challenging, particularly at the particle scale level. On the other hand, the discrete element method has proven its capability in capturing the response of granular material at the microscopic scale. However, the method has some limitation in modeling flexible structural elements. Coupling the discrete and finite elements methods is a promising approach that takes advantage of the two methods. In this thesis, the response of buried pipes subject to axial and lateral ground movements are evaluated using three-dimensional discrete and coupled discrete-finite element methods. The research results have been published in refereed journals and presented in seven chapters that comprise this manuscript-based thesis. The behavior of rigid pipe buried in dense sand under axial ground movement is first evaluated using discrete element method. The input parameters of the model are obtained using a precise calibration procedure and numerical results are validated using experimental data. Results indicated that, for the rigid pipes buried in dense sand, current equations may not properly consider the dilative behavior of the soil and underestimate the soil axial resistance. The numerical approach has proven to be efficient in modeling pipelines subjected to relative soil movement. The created model is then used to conduct a comprehensive parametric study to develop a new expression that estimates the earth pressure coefficient and the soil axial resistance acting on the rigid pipe. A three-dimensional coupled finite-discrete element framework has been developed and used to investigate the response of a (medium density polyethylene) MDPE pipe under axial and lateral relative ground movements. The pipe is modeled using finite elements while the surrounding soil is modeled using discrete elements. Interface elements are used to transfer forces between these two domains. The response of the soil at microscale level was analyzed and the deformations and strains developing in the MDPE pipe were investigated. Results showed that caution must be considered when using current methods in the analysis of MDPE pipes. Conclusions and recommendations have been made on the pipe-soil interactions under soil movement." --

Book excerpt: This book presents a detailed discussion of the models that were developed to simulate the collapse and post-collapse behavior of steel pipes. The finite element method offers to engineers the possibility of developing models to simulate the collapse behavior of casings inside oil wells and the collapse behavior of deepwater pipelines. However, if technological decisions are going to be reached from these model results, with implications for the economic success of industrial operations, for the occupational safety and health and for the environment, the engineering models need to be highly reliable. Using these models engineers can quantify the effect of manufacturing tolerances, wear, corrosion, etc. This book describes in great details the experimental programs that are developed to validate the numerical results.

Book excerpt: This study deals with structural behavior of reinforced concrete pipes under various loading and support conditions by using nonlinear three-dimensional isoparametric 20-node brick elements. the computer program of three dimensional nonlinear finite element analysis of reinforced concrete structures, written by Al- Shaarbaf is utilized. The behavior of concrete is investigated by using twenty-node brick elements. The reinforcement bars are idealized as axial members embedded within the brick elements with perfect bond between the concrete and the steel curved bars in a brick element were approximated by straight bars parallel to the main coordinate axes. The behavior of concrete in compression is simulated by an (Elastic- Plastic Work Hardening Model) followed by a perfect plastic response, which is terminated at the onest of crushing. In tension, a smeared crack model with fixed orthogonal cracks has been used with the inclusion of models for the retained post-cracking tensile stress and reduced shear transfer modulus. Loading of the pipes and support conditions were properly considered according to the characteristics of the problem.
