These false causes are shewn; which are. (1.) Sin on his part that suffers, 8. (2.) Hatred on God's part, 9. 2. The principles are shewn, inducing men to make such false references: and these are, (1.) The fallibility of the rule, and the falseness of the opinion by which they judge, 11. (2.) Their inability in discerning, joined with their confidence in pronouncing, 13. (3.) The inbred malice of our nature, 15. II. That not always the sin or merit of the person afflicted, but the will of God that afflicts, is sometimes the sole, but always the sufficient reason of the affliction, 17. In support of which, God's own testimony, Job xlii. 7, is produced; a distinction is made between punishments and afflictions, 18. and God's proceeding herein cleared from injustice upon these reasons: 1. His absolute, unaccountable dominion and sovereignty over the creature, 18. 2. The essential equity of his nature, 20. 3. His unerring, all-disposing wisdom, 23. III. God never inflicts evil upon men but for the great end of advancing his own glory, and that usually in the way of their good. This is sufficiently clear in the present instance, 24. and expressed in those words of the text, that the works of God might be made manifest in him. The works that God intends thus to glorify, usually are, 1. The miraculous works of his power, 25. 2. The works of his grace, 27. The use and improvement of the doctrine thus discussed is a confutation and reproof of the bold, uncharitable interpreters of God's providences; whose peremptory way of judging is peculiarly odious to him for the cursed cause of it, curiosity; which may be properly accounted the incontinence of the mind, and is but one remove from the rebellion of it, 30. They were selected for publication not as possessing, for that reason, any special merit, but because they were the only ones the publication of which was possible for their author. The preacher of what are called extempore sermons - that is to say, sermons not read from manuscript, but delivered from brief notes - cannot reproduce them in print unless they happen to have been taken down at the time by a reporter. Such reports can hardly ever be verbatim, and are for the most part more' or less imperfect and inaccurate. The process of revising them and of supplying their omissions, with a view to publica tion, is not an easy one, even when attempted after the lapse of a few days - still less so after that of years; and its results are rarely quite satisfactoryeither to the author or the reader. A sermon thus patched and mended has neither the freshness and point of the extempore nor the smoothness and sustained thought of the written composition. It is neither a religious speech, which the extempore sermon ought to be - nor a religious essay, which the written sermon ought to be; and it runs the risk of uniting the defects of both styles with the merits of neither. Such as it is, however, this method was the only one available for me, when, in compli ance with many and repeated requests, I employed the enforced leisure of a long convalescence in pre paring for the press those few sermons of mine which have been reported with sufficient accuracy to allow of the attempt to reproduce them in somewhat better form. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons on Several Occasions, Vol. 3 But although this direction relates only to our Christian brethren, (such, at least, by outward profession, ) that in the text is of a far wider extent; it unquestionably relates to all mankind. It clearly requires us, to keep at a distance, as far as is practicable, from all ungodly men. Indeed it seems, the word which we render unclean thing, 73 usotptov, might rather be rendered unclean person; probably alluding to the ceremonial law, which'forbade touching one that was legally unclean. But even here, were we to understand the expres sion literally, were we to take the words in the strictest sense, the same absurdity would follow we must needs, as the Apostle speaks, 1 go out of the world. We should not be able to abide in those callings, Which the Providence of God has assigned us. Were we not to converse at all with men of those characters, it would be im possible to transact our temporal business.
