Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The project discussed in this report focused on two primary research objectives. The first objective was to evaluate the technical feasibility and costs associated with introducing autonomous human behavior models into the Joint Conflict and Tactical Simulation (JCATS) environment. The second objective was to evaluate and recommend improved graphical user interfaces for specifying JCATS entity behaviors, which would aid both scenario generation and execution. This project developed a demonstration scenario for a "Thinking OPFOR" (Opposing Force) capability for entities in a JCATS Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT) scenario, which drove an analysis of the ability to provide "thinking" type entities and deploying such entities within the JCATS infrastructure. This analysis was used to propose two alternative solution paths to providing realistic human-like behaviors for JCATS entities. For the second objective, a prototype behavior editor was designed and built to specify autonomous entity behaviors within the current JCATS infrastructure. This prototype was used to analyze design recommendations for alternative types of user interfaces for future JCATS tools.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's complicated and uncertain world, it is impossible to predict the exact nature of future conflict that might involve the U.S. Army. So the Army must be ready to meet the challenges of any type of conflict, in all kinds of places, and against all kinds of threats. This is the nature of the contemporary operational environment (COE) and the makeup of the opposing force (OPFOR) used in training for the COE. This manual is one of a series that describes an opposing force (OPFOR) for training U.S. Army commanders, staffs, and units. See the References section for a list of the manuals in this series. Together, these manuals outline an OPFOR that can cover the entire spectrum of military and paramilitary capabilities against which the Army must train to ensure success in any future conflict. Applications for this series of manuals include field training, training simulations, and classroom instruction throughout the Army. All Army training venues should use an OPFOR based on these manuals, except when mission rehearsal or contingency training requires maximum fidelity to a specific real-world threat. Even in the latter case, trainers should use appropriate parts of the OPFOR manuals to fill information gaps in a manner consistent with what they do know about a specific threat.

Book excerpt: This manual, “Opposing Force Operations (FM 7-100.1),” is one of a series that describes a contemporary Opposing Force (OPFOR) for training U.S. Army commanders, staffs, and units. Together, these manuals outline an OPFOR than can cover the entire spectrum of military and paramilitary capabilities against which the Army must train to ensure success in any future conflict. This OPFOR reflects the characteristics of military and paramilitary forces that may be present in the contemporary operational environment (COE). Like those real-world threats, the OPFOR will continue to present new and different challenges for U.S. forces. The COE is constantly changing, and it is important for U.S. Army training environments to keep pace with real-world developments. Trainers should use appropriate parts of the OPFOR manuals to fill information gaps in a manner consistent with what they do know about a specific threat.

Book excerpt: Simulations are widely used in the military for training personnel, analyzing proposed equipment, and rehearsing missions, and these simulations need realistic models of human behavior. This book draws together a wide variety of theoretical and applied research in human behavior modeling that can be considered for use in those simulations. It covers behavior at the individual, unit, and command level. At the individual soldier level, the topics covered include attention, learning, memory, decisionmaking, perception, situation awareness, and planning. At the unit level, the focus is on command and control. The book provides short-, medium-, and long-term goals for research and development of more realistic models of human behavior.

Book excerpt: Field Manual FM 7-0 Train to Win in a Complex World October 2016 FM 7-0, Train to Win in a Complex World, expands on the fundamental concepts of the Army's training doctrine introduced in ADRP 7-0. The Army's operations process is the foundation for how leaders conduct unit training. It also places the commander firmly at the center of the process and as the lead of every facet of unit training. FM 7-0 supports the idea that training a unit does not fundamentally differ from preparing a unit for an operation. Reinforcing the concepts, ideas, and terminology of the operations process while training as a unit makes a more seamless transition from training to operations. This publication focuses on training leaders, Soldiers, and Army Civilians as effectively and efficiently as possible given limitations in time and resources.

Book excerpt: Understanding the potential synergies between computer simulation and wargaming Based on the insights of experts in both domains, Simulation and Wargaming comprehensively explores the intersection between computer simulation and wargaming. This book shows how the practice of wargaming can be augmented and provide more detail-oriented insights using computer simulation, particularly as the complexity of military operations and the need for computational decision aids increases. The distinguished authors have hit upon two practical areas that have tremendous applications to share with one another but do not seem to be aware of that fact. The book includes insights into: The application of the data-driven speed inherent to computer simulation to wargames The application of the insight and analysis gained from wargames to computer simulation The areas of concern raised by the combination of these two disparate yet related fields New research and application opportunities emerging from the intersection Addressing professionals in the wargaming, modeling, and simulation industries, as well as decision makers and organizational leaders involved with wargaming and simulation, Simulation and Wargaming offers a multifaceted and insightful read and provides the foundation for future interdisciplinary progress in both domains.
