Book Synopsis The Political Discourse of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth by : Anna Grześkowiak-Krwawicz
Download or read book The Political Discourse of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth written by Anna Grześkowiak-Krwawicz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-05 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book makes a contribution to ongoing European research into the political discourse of the early modern era, analyzing the political discourse of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (1569–1795). The sources comprise the broadly understood political literature from the end of the sixteenth century until the end of the eighteenth century. The author has selected and analysed concepts and ideas that are particularly important for the noble political discourse, with the aim of understanding what these concepts meant for the participants in public debate, who used them, how they explained and described the world, how they allowed for the formulation of political postulates and ideals, whether their meaning changed over time, and if so, then to what extent and under what influences. The author’s research focuses not only on the understanding of the concepts that functioned in the period under study but also on their use as instruments in the political struggle. The book is addressed to readers from the academic milieu – students and researchers – but is likewise accessible to less prepared readers interested in the history of political language and concepts as well as the history of political thought.

Book Synopsis Meaning, Discourse and Society by : Wolfgang Teubert
Download or read book Meaning, Discourse and Society written by Wolfgang Teubert and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-03-25 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meaning, Discourse and Society investigates the construction of reality within discourse. When people talk about things such as language, the mind, globalisation or weeds, they are less discussing the outside world than objects they have created collaboratively by talking about them. Wolfgang Teubert shows that meaning cannot be found in mental concepts or neural activity, as implied by the cognitive sciences. He argues instead that meaning is negotiated and knowledge is created by symbolic interaction, thus taking language as a social, rather than a mental, phenomenon. Discourses, Teubert contends, can be viewed as collective minds, enabling the members of discourse communities to make sense of themselves and of the world around them. By taking an active stance in constructing the reality they share, people thus can take part in moulding the world in accordance with their perceived needs.
Book Synopsis Discourse, Structure and Linguistic Choice by : T. Price Caldwell
Download or read book Discourse, Structure and Linguistic Choice written by T. Price Caldwell and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-19 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents eight papers and a draft monograph by T. Price Caldwell on topics in linguistics, semiotics and philosophy of language. From the beginning of his professional career onwards, Caldwell wrote short fiction and poetry, and he taught English literature. The relevance to these of philosophy of language, semiotics and certain areas of linguistics increasingly caught his interest. This book presents the fruits of this later work. Of the papers included here, two are abstract and theoretical, focusing on linguistic methodology and Caldwell’s overarching views on the nature of meaning-in-context. His position here, which he called Molecular Sememics, echoes early Structuralism and Functionalism, but addresses shortfalls in each. Two other papers apply the method and theory to topics within semantics and pragmatics, including especially the structuring of discourse. The remaining four papers connect Caldwell’s theoretical insights to his life-long interests in fiction and pedagogy. The monograph – which Caldwell was left unfinished due to illness – aims to present as a single intellectual package the theory and the applications.
