Book excerpt: Can holy blessings be found in a box of donuts? Can an angry, grieving skinhead learn to become a peacemaker after a chance encounter with a strange old lady? Can a rock in a leather bag help a wounded soldier's spirit heal? The Gods of old still walk the world. They can still be found, if you know how to look. And they bring blessings and challenges, suffering and healing, to those who can find them. In this collection of short stories, John T. Mainer explores how the ancient Gods might still be found, and how they might bless us as our paths cross theirs. From war-torn Bosnia and Afghanistan, to the peaceful green hills of British Columbia and the bustle of downtown Vancouver, he shows us how-perhaps-we might find them today. Even the most ordinary of places can turn out to be not so ordinary at all. . . and even the most ordinary-seeming person could turn out to be a God in disguise.

Book excerpt: A thoughtful, accessible look at the rapidly growing issue of invasive plants, animals, and microbes around the globe with a focus on the scientific issues and ecological, health, and other challenges From an award-winning adventure and science journalist comes an eye-opening exploration of a burgeoning environmental phenomenon and the science coalescing around it. Leslie Anthony leads readers on adventures physical and philosophical as he explores how and why invasive species are hijacking ecosystems around the globe. Weaving science, travel, history, and humor with diverse examples to chart and describe the phases of species invasion and human response, Anthony introduces field researchers and managers who seek to understand the biological, social, and economic aspects of this complex issue, and whose work collectively suggests the emergence of a global shadow economy centered on invasives. With tales of pythons in the Everglades, Asian carp and lamprey in the Great Lakes, Japanese knotweed seemingly everywhere, and the invasive organisms we don’t see—pathogens and microbes such as the Zika virus—this book rivets attention on a new ecological reality.

With humor he was able to get himself out of situations and not feel inferior to other kids. It became an important tool that he would use while teaching and coaching high school for thirty-three years. It kept him from ever having to send a student to the office.Charles' favorite times are the holidays when the family gets together to laugh and have fun. Humor is always a big part of communication in his family. The connection and love is primarily there because of God, but it is enhanced because of the humor his family enjoys.Charles has found that humor is important in one's everyday life. He has found that life is not easy and can cripple us in so many ways: physically, mentally, socially, and emotionally. He has found that you should always make time to laugh and when people do this they feel good. He has also found that laughter is strong medicine for a person's well being. He practices what he preaches and tries to smile every day. He spends time with happy people and he has learned to laugh at himself. He says pay attention to children and learn from them, because they are the masters of play and laughter. This book is Charles' attempt to enhance your life with some humor and by doing so he hopes it will make you smile, chuckle, or just laugh out loud. So he wants you to get a cup of coffee, find a comfortable place and just sit back and read some Just Plain Funny stuff.

Book excerpt: As Lieutenant Mark McHenry hovers in a twilight state between life and death, and a mysterious, bearded one-eyed man moves ghost-like through the ship with his own esoteric agenda, Captain Mackenzie Calhoun and Commander Elizabeth Shelby go head to head over the growing problem on Danter. There, the god-like creatures known only as 'The Beings' are building an increasing power base, and the question is whether they are potentially the greatest ally or the greatest threat that the Federation has ever known. When more aggressive races such as the Thallonians enter into the mix, threatening to send the entire galaxy spiralling into war over the miracle food called Ambrosia, only the starships Excalibur and Trident -- with the aid of Ambassador Spock -- can stave off a conflict that could crack apart the Federation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an account of the compelling story of missionaries James and Mary Nell Giles, who spent thirty-four years as missionaries at the International Baptist Theological Seminary in Cali, Colombia, South America. In addition to their teaching responsibilities, they invested much time developing new churches in that area and ministering to people in times of disasters, such as earthquakes, floods, and a volcano eruption. They and their four children coped with language and cultural barriers and limited communication with family and friends in the United States, but they had a sense of Gods call which kept them on the field in spite of difficulties. The book reveals the emotional struggles as James and Mary Nell said goodbye to their children when they finished high school and went to the United States for college. Even though they were not close geographically, they were able to keep in contact through short wave radio. These four children finished college, are now married and launched in their chosen careers, and have given their parents a total of nine grandchildren. James and Mary Nell spent a great deal of time in their last years in Colombia ministering to the survivors of a volcano eruption which created a mudslide which destroyed the city of Armero, Colombia, where 22, 000 people perished the night of November 13, 1985. They took medicines and clothing to survivors in the hospitals and shelters of 8,000 people who survived the tragedy. They helped get many of these people reorganized in adjacent towns of Lrida and Ibagu. These pages are filled with emotion as the people coped with the loss of loved ones, houses, and personal possessions. After retirement, the couple settled in Dallas, Texas, where James is still active as part-time hospital chaplain in a medical center. Mary Nell stays busy organizing pictures and mementos of their years in Colombia, and in keeping in touch with family. She also finds many people who speak Spanish in the shopping centers, and enjoys keeping her Spanish up to date.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is your company all bizz -- filled with professional managers, accountants, and financial planners who produce "smooth operations" but offer no customer savvy or soul? Or is it all buzz -- filled with talk, hype, and the brainstorming of half-cooked ideas that often lead nowhere? To capture the best of these dichotomous worlds, creativity expert Bernd H. Schmitt and accomplished business writer Laura Brown introduce a groundbreaking model of a creative organization they call "The Garage." This powerful new framework demonstrates how any executive can manage the creative tension between the analytic, rational side of business and its dynamic, innovative side. After laying out the broad mission, or "blueprint," for constructing The Garage, Schmitt and Brown present The Toolbox -- specific instruments for infusing creativity into all aspects of a business -- and show how to use The Blueprint and The Toolbox as essential strategy, recruiting, resource, and communications devices. At the center of this immensely readable book are the "Mastercrafts of The Garage" -- technology, branding, and customer-experience management -- the organizational forces that guarantee creative efforts are coordinated and well implemented to provide competitive advantage. To illustrate particular aspects of creativity, Schmitt and Brown open each chapter with a story or "business parable," each written in a different genre -- horror, detective, love story, or fairy tale -- accompanied by evocative photographs. They also draw on scores of cutting-edge examples of creative, innovative ventures such as American Express's Blue, W Hotels, Eli Lilly's "Answers That Matter," SAP, and NTT DoCoMo's i-mode. Build Your Own Garage is timely and instructive reading for any manager charged with the mandate to bring to market quickly the most useful and innovative products and services. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone knows that fossil fuels won’t last forever. Something needs to change at some point, regardless of whether the issue is climate change or because we need a practical replacement for petroleum as cheap supplies run out. But while headlines suggest that a green-energy paradise is around the corner, not many are aware of the immense technical challenges that stand in its way. To turn our backs on fossil fuels, a staggering amount of work will be required to refit a global energy sector that has grown systematically for over a century. News of the latest green advancements can make it seem like plug-and-play technology, and simply a matter of switching from one source to another. In reality, the challenge is far greater, and infinitely more complicated. To make matters worse, environmentalists and fossil-fuel defenders wage continuous but fruitless war, and the growing gap makes it impossible to have any sort of constructive dialogue. Each camp becomes more locked in their position with every exchange, and the most revolutionary ideas never see the light of day. Instead of building, time and money are wasted sparring. Sparing no sacred cows, Terry Etam cuts through the media rhetoric, government propaganda, and widespread ignorance of the energy sector to get to the heart of what needs to change—and what needs to stay the same—if the challenges of moving away from fossil fuels are to be met, while maintaining the quality of life we have come to expect and rely on.
