Book excerpt: The effects of variations in thermomechanical processing (TMP) parameters on grain refinement in 2519 A1-Cu alloy were studied. Refined grains enhance tensile ductility and are a prerequisite for superplastic response. The TMP variables were adjusted based on panicle stimulated nucleation (PSN) theory. Process modifications included increased initial overaging time and decreased subsequent warm rolling temperatures. Backscatter orientation-contrast (BSOC) techniques for the scanning electron microscope (SEM) were developed to achieve grain-orientation contrast An accelerating voltage of 5KV resulted in increased intensities for atomic number and orientation contrast. Both grains and theta- phase (A12Cu) precipitates were revealed on the same micrograph at higher resolutions than attainable in the optical microscope. Quantitative data from micrographs were obtained using image analysis methods. A method based on statistical considerations was developed to determine an approximate critical theta-phase particle diameter (d sub crit) for PSN. The theta-phase particle distribution was shown to be an important factor for grain refinement via PSN.

Book excerpt: The first part of this study involved determining the mechanism by which elevated-temperature deformation occurred for selected tensile specimens from previous research on thermomechanically processed Al2519 alloy. Microtexture information in the form of discrete pole figures indicated that the most highly superplastic material had completely recrystallized and deformed via grain boundary sliding, whereas material that did not display superplastic behavior deformed via slip. The second part of the study was designed to achieve further refinement of the microstructure of Al2519 using the particle stimulated nucleation (PSN) model as a guide. Using the overaging parameters of the thermomechanical process (TMP) that had yielded the greatest elongation in previous work, additional material was processed but with varying final total processing strain. The resulting material was analyzed using backscatter electron (BSE) microscopy methods to evaluate the effect of total processing strain on the average grain size. The smallest true volume grain size was associated with the material with the highest total processing strain. jg p3.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive treatise on the hot working of aluminum and its alloys, Hot Deformation and Processing of Aluminum Alloys details the possible microstructural developments that can occur with hot deformation of various alloys, as well as the kind of mechanical properties that can be anticipated. The authors take great care to explain and differentiate hot working in the context of other elevated temperature phenomena, such as creep, superplasticity, cold working, and annealing. They also pay particular attention to the fundamental mechanisms of aluminum plasticity at hot working temperatures. Using extensive analysis derived from polarized light optical microscopy (POM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD) scanning electron-microscopy with electron backscatter imaging (SEM-EBSD), and orientation imaging microscopy (OIM), the authors examine those microstructures that evolve in torsion, compression, extrusion, and rolling. Further microstructural analysis leads to detailed explanations of dynamic recovery (DRV), static recovery (SRV), discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (dDRX), discontinuous static recrystallization (dSRX), grain defining dynamic recovery (gDRV) (formerly geometric dynamic recrystallization, or gDRX), and continuous dynamic recrystallization involving both a single phase (cDRX/1-phase) and multiple phases (cDRX/2-phase). A companion to other works that focus on modeling, manufacturing involving plastic and superplastic deformation, and control of texture and phase transformations, this book provides thorough explanations of microstructural development to lay the foundation for further study of the mechanisms of thermomechanical processes and their application.

Book excerpt: Previous research had demonstrated superplastic behavior in aluminum-magnesium alloys of high magnesium content to result from deformation processing to an initially non recrystallized condition. Analysis here of those data has demonstrated that such a result may be understood in terms of constitutive equations developed for fine-grained materials and that the constitutive equations are applicable to materials achieving grain boundary misorientations in the range of only 2 to 7 by a process of continuous recrystallization. The constitutive equations provide a basis for analysis of anomalous temperature dependence of the strength and of the activation energy for plastic deformation seen as well in this work. A study of the separate effects of processing variables has lead to a model for continuous recrystallization during deformation processing. This model considers recovery of dislocations to sub-boundaries to be the critical step in this process. Application of this model to development of advanced aluminum alloys for air frame structural applications will result in increased weight savings by such processing methods. Theses Keywords: Superplasticity; Aluminum magnesium alloys; Thermomechanical processing; Microstructural evolution; Continuous recrystallization; Microstructural instability; Grain growth.

Book excerpt: The effects of different overaging temperatures and times prior to the rolling portion of a thermomechanical process (TMP) were examined to determine those combinations resulting in refined microstructures capable of supporting superplastic behavior. Specimens of processed Al 2519 were tension tested at elevated temperatures after varying TMP parameters. Enhanced ductility in comparison to unprocessed material was observed at all test temperatures in the range of 3OO-45O0C. Moderate superplastic ductilities (up to 300%) were encountered under some conditions. Backscattered electron imaging techniques coupled with quantitative microstructural analysis methods were used to examine both processed and deformed samples. The correlations among processing, microstructure and mechanical behavior are presented.

Book excerpt: This study examines the effects of pre-strain deformation temperature, overaging temperature, and other variations in thermomechanical processing (TMP) on the mean size and size distribution of q-phase precipitate particles in Al alloy 2519. Examination was performed using the scanning electron microscope in the backscattered imaging mode and quantitative image analysis methods were employed. The goal was to find a combination of TMP parameters which produces q-phase particles exceeding a critical diameter for particle stimulated nucleation (PSN) of recrystallization. A necessary prerequisite for superplasticity is a uniformly fine, equiaxed grain size and PSN is theorized to be capable of such grain refinement. Such a microstructure has been developed in Aluminum alloys containing large second phase particles when the alloys are subjected to cold work and recrystallization treatments.

Book excerpt: An aluminum copper lithium zirconium alloy, recently registered as 2090, with 7 percent lower density and 10 percent higher elastic modulus, has been introduced as a replacement for the 7075-T6 alloy. The purpose of this research is to investigate the applicability of thermomechanical processing methods developed at NPS for materials including Al-Mg and Al-Mg-Li alloys, to the 2090 alloy. The material is hot worked, cold worked, aged and warm rolled to a total true strain of about 2.4. Tensile tests were conducted at different temperatures and strain rates allowing a determination of the effect of the processing on microstructural evolution and the superplastic behavior of this material.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 38 (thesis year 1993) a total of 13,787 thesis titles from 22 Canadian and 164 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 38 reports theses submitted in 1993, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: Overaging experiments have been conducted on a commercial grade 2519 Al-Cu alloy at a variety of temperatures and times, with and without prior induced strain. Hardness testing and scanning electron microscopy techniques were used to characterize evolution of microstructure during overaging. The further development of microstructure during thermomechanical processing by warm rolling was also assessed to determine whether the coarse particles produced by overaging could serve as sites for particle stimulated nucleation (PSN) of recrystallization. The thermomechanical processing methods have been shown to produce highly superplastic microstructures in Al-Mg and Al-Mg-Li alloys in previous work at NPS. Optical microscopy and tensile tests were conducted allowing a determination of the effect of the processing on the microstructural evolution and superplastic behavior of the Al-Cu material. Book excerpt: Abstract : Critical exploration of the minimalistic high strength low alloy aluminum (HSLA-Al) paradigm is necessary for the continued development of advanced aluminum alloys. In this study, scandium (Sc) and zirconium (Zr) are examined as the main precipitation strengthening additions, while magnesium (Mg) is added to probe the synergistic effects of solution and precipitation hardening, as well as the grain refinement during solidification afforded by a moderate growth restriction factor. Further, pathways of recrystallization are explored in several potential HSLA-Al systems sans Sc. Aluminum-titanium-boron (Al-Ti-B) and aluminum-titanium-carbon (Al-Ti-C) grain refining master alloys are added to a series of Al-Zr alloys to examine both the reported Zr poisoning effect on grain size reduction and the impact on recrystallization resistance through the use of electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) imaging. Results include an analysis of active strengthening mechanisms and advisement for both constitution and thermomechanical processing of HSLA-Al alloys for wrought or near-net shape cast components. The mechanisms of recrystallization are discussed for alloys which contain a bimodal distribution of particles, some of which act as nucleation sites for grain formation during annealing and others which restrict the growth of the newly formed grains.
