Book excerpt: None of the models available in the literature are known to work very well for aromatic compounds such as the ones that occur in coal derived materials. Two models - one by Van Velzen et al. (Ind Eng. Chem. Fundam. Vol 11, 1972, pp. 20-25) using a group contribution method and the other by Hwang et al (Ind. Eng. Chem. Process Des. Dev., Vol. 21, 1982, pp. 127-134) using a corresponding states method - were tested for some typical compounds that occur in coal liquids. These methods give errors ranging from 10 to 50% for viscosities of such compounds. These errors are too high and considering further errors in extension of these models to coal liquids, these models were considered unacceptable in our work. We have therefore set out to develop a new model for viscosities of aromatic compounds. We plan to base the model on the procedure similar to that of Van Velzen, however developed for just aromatic compounds. Our model, once developed will therefore be a group contribution method centered around the benzene ring structure.

Book excerpt: The viscosity of coal derived liquids is an important property that is required for the design of the coal liquefaction processes, as well as for understanding the flow characteristics of coal liquids. Coal liquids are complex undefined mixtures and boil over a wide range of temperatures. One method of characterizing coal liquids is to treat coal liquids as a continuous distribution of molecular weights. Upon review of the literature for viscosity correlations, the authors quickly concluded that there is no accurate method available that may be successfully applied to coal liquids. They generally believe that correlations based on molecular structure of materials are superior to those that use solely the characterization parameters such as refractive index, critical properties, density, boiling points etc. A few correlations in the literature do consider molecular structures in viscosity determinations. Using important features in these correlations, they set out to develop a new viscosity correlation that would apply to model coal aromatic compounds, their mixtures and finally to coal derived liquids themselves. The correlation for pure compounds and mixtures has been developed and is discussed below. Attempts are now being made to apply this to coal derived liquids.

Book excerpt: The paper outlines background objectives, experimental methods and results for two studies: A group contribution method for the prediction of viscosity of coal-derived liquids, and Equation of state at high pressures for liquid aromatic compounds. Criteria for the new model, low pressure viscosity data set, new viscosity model for pure liquid aromatics, illustration of viscosity calculation using the model, and extension of the model to mixtures are discussed in the first study. Contents of the second study are: high pressure equation of state; new vapor pressure equation; and new correlation for saturated liquid densities.

Major topics reported are: Summaries of the final reports produced by Lehigh University, West Virginia University, and Vander Sande Associates under the Participants Program are presented. Analytical data produced by CONSOL are provided in Appendix I for all samples employed in the Participants Program and issued with the samples to research groups in the Participants Program. A paper was presented at the 1992 US Department of Energy Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center Liquefaction Contractors' Review Conference, held in Pittsburgh September 23--24, 1992, entitled ''The Chemical Nature of Coal Liquid Resids and the Implications for Process Development''. It appears as Appendix 2 in this report.

Book excerpt: Changes in coal structure that occur during coal drying and steam pretreatments will be measured in order to determine what effect water has on retrograde/condensation reactions, and to determine how water enhances coal reactivity toward liquefaction. Coal drying experiments were begun using thermal, microwave, and chemical methods; NMR data were collected. A stirred microautoclave reactor system was acquired.

This book was released on 1992 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The molecules comprising coal liquids can range from less than 10 to several hundred Å in diameter. Their size is, therefore, comparable to the average pore size of most hydroprocessing catalysts. Thus, during processing, transport of these molecules into the catalyst occurs mainly by ''configurational'' or ''hindered diffusion, '' which is the result of two phenomena occurring in the pores; the distribution of solute molecules in the pores is affected by the pores and the solute molecules experience an increased hydrodynamic drag. The field of hindered diffusion has been reviewed by Deen [16]. The earliest studies in the filed were by Renkin et al. [17].

Book excerpt: On September 1, 1989 work was initiated on a project to extend the available vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) model for coal fluids to allow satisfactory predictions of excess enthalpies of coal liquids at high pressures. The available vapor liquid equilibrium model was developed with support from previous grant from DOE-PETC (Grant no. DE-FG22-89PC90541). The current project also involves measurement of some model compound VLE data and chromatographic characterization of coal liquids for distribution of heteroatoms. A computational thermodynamic model for VLE, excess enthalpies and heat capacities of coal derived liquids has been developed. The model uses the modified UNIFAC correlation for the liquid phase. Some unavailable UNIFAC interactions parameters have been regressed from experimental VLE and excess enthalpy data. The computations are carried out using the method of continuous thermodynamics. Mode is used to derive interesting conclusions on the effect of oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur heteroatoms on the thermodynamic properties of coal liquids. When compared with limited experimental data available for coal liquids the model shows good agreement. Some progress has been made on binary VLE measurements and size exclusion chromatography of coal liquids.
