Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is part of a comprehensive review of the thermal radiative properties of air by the Lockheed Palo Alto Research Laboratory for the Defense Atomic Support Agency. The review was published as DASA 1917 (Unclassified) in four parts, April, 1967. Most of this material is now being offered in new editions by Plenum Press. The authors and editors hope that it will be more widely available to scientists and engineers who work in the various fields which require the use of high temperature air properties. F. R. Gilmore and A. Hochstim have revised and increased the material presented in DASA 1917-1 in "Equilibrium Thermodynamic Properties of Air" . The present editors have prepared an introduction for the tables presented in DASA 1917-3 so that "Tables of Radiative Properties of Air" offered herewith is essentially self-contained. A few more figures have been added and a number of errors have been corrected. We have also prepared a slightly revised edition of DASA 1917-4, "Excitation and Non-E"quilibrium Phenomena inAir," offered by Plenum Press at this time as a companion volume. DASA 1917-2, "The Radiative Properties of Heated Air" by B. H. Armstrong and R. W. Nicholls is not being offered in a new edition at this time.

Book excerpt: This volume presents tables of the equilibrium radiative properties of air and its constituents for a wide range of temperatures and densities. The information contained in such tables is of necessity a combination of experimental fact and theoretical computation. The work is divided into five parts: Part A is a summary section designed to give an overview of the field. Some of the data are presented in semi-schematic form and should not be used for quantitative work. Part B gives basic data and references used in the preparation of the subsequent parts. Finally, parts C, D and E contain the absorption coefficients in the ranges 1000K to 24,000K (Part C), 1 eV to 20 EV(Part D), and above 20 eV(Part E). (Author).

Book excerpt: Radiation and Reentry is an integrated review of a series of publications dealing with radiative transfer theory, applied spectroscopy, radiation gas dynamics, and ablation phenomena. This book contains seven chapters and begins with a presentation of opacity calculations under conditions for which detailed considerations of spectral line structures and widths are not required. The discussion then shifts to the basic methods involved in the formulation of radiative transfer problems; origin and definition of the Planck and Rosseland mean free paths; the conservation equations for reacting, multicomponent gas mixtures with proper allowance for radiative energy flux; and similarity parameters in radiation gas dynamics. These topics are followed by a summary of data relevant to the optically thick, optically thin, and isothermal cases for air in local thermodynamic equilibrium. A chapter describes the radiative properties of spherical particles and their particle size distributions. Another chapter considers the estimation of radiant-energy transmission through atmosphere. The concluding chapters explore the radiation transfer effects on the flow about a re-entry body and the specific problems of the effect of radiant-energy transfer on acoustic waves, shock wave structure, and shock and boundary layers. These chapters also examine the theoretical and experimental studies on the ablation of re-entry vehicles. This book is of great value to educated nonspecialists who are interested in the application of radiation field to high-speed atmospheric entry.

Book excerpt: The report deals with excitation and non-equilibrium phenomena in air that has been subjected to a large amount of radiation. The following topics are covered: Absorption and scattering of X-rays and gamma rays in air; Collisions of ions and electrons with air molecules; Secondary processes following this excitation. (This includes the creation of various chemical species); X-ray heating and shock heating of air with special reference to very high energy densities; The approach to composition equilibrium in low and high temperature air; Adiabatic, near equilibrium cooling of air and the formulation of a criterion for local thermodynamic equilibrium; Non-equilibrium radiative transport and its effect on the total amount and the spectrum of emitted radiation; Radiation in tennous air at high temperatures; Radiation in tennous air with contaminants at low temperatures. The report has two appendices. One discusses mathematical aspects of the approach to equilibrium of a displaced system. The other one presents a table of the states and spectra of the metallic monoxides. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiative Heat Exchange in the Atmosphere analyzes the concerns in thermal radiation and the radiation balance of the earth's surface and of the atmosphere. The text first covers the basic definitions and concepts, and then proceeds to discussing the development of basic theories of actinometric measurements of thermal radiation fluxes. Next, the selection deals with the absorption of long-wave radiation in the atmosphere. In the fourth chapter, the title covers the solution of the problem of radiative heat transfer in the atmosphere. Chapter 5 details the examination of the approximate methods of calculation of thermal radiation fluxes, while Chapter 6 discusses the problem of the atmosphere and the net radiation at the ground. The seventh chapter tackles the radiation balance, and the last chapter covers the features of the methods and the results of calculating temperature changes caused by radiation. The book will be of great use to researchers and practitioners of astrophysics and meteorology. Ecologists and other environmental scientist will also benefit from the text.

Book excerpt: Thermal Radiation: An Introduction is a complete textbook for a one-semester introductory graduate course on radiative energy transfer. It bridges the gap between a basic introduction and comprehensive coverage of thermal radiation, focusing on insight into radiative transfer as practiced by engineers. Covering radiative transfer among surfaces, with an introduction to the effects of participating media between surfaces, the book includes surface and medium property characteristics and solutions to the radiative transfer equation in simple geometries. • Tailored and organized specifically to suit a one-semester graduate course in radiative heat transfer. • Emphasis is placed on insight into radiative transfer as practiced by engineers. • Discusses how radiation is incorporated into finite element analysis (FEA) codes. The textbook is intended for instructors and graduate students in a first-year course on radiative heat transfer or advanced heat transfer. Supplementary resources for students and instructors are available online.
