Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of this investigation was to determine the feasibility of preparing uranium single crystals similar in structural perfection to those prepared by the grain coarsening procedure (see Part III, ANL-502l). In this respect, the investigation has not been completed Although it was found feasible to prepare single crystals of relatively large dimensions, the structural perfection of the single crystals was far from desirable for most purposes. jg p.5.

Book Synopsis Properties of Salt-grown Uranium Single Crystals by :
Download or read book Properties of Salt-grown Uranium Single Crystals written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently single crystals of [alpha]-uranium were grown from a liquid salt bath. The electrical, magnetic and thermal properties of these crystals have been surveyed. The ratio of the room temperature resistivity of these crystals to the saturation value at low temperature is three times larger than any previously reported demonstrating that the crystals are of higher purity and quality than those in past work. The resistive signatures of the CDW transitions at 43, 37 and 22 K are obvious to the naked eye. The transition at 22 K exhibits temperature hysteresis that increases with magnetic field. In addition the superconducting transition temperature from resistivity is 820 mK and the critical field is 80 mT. Contrary to earlier work where the Debye temperature ranged from 186 to 218 K, the Debye temperature extracted from the heat capacity is 254 K in good agreement with the predicted value of 250 K. Magnetoresistance, Hall effect and magnetic susceptibility measurements are underway. In time, measurements made on these crystals may help us to understand the origin of superconductivity and its relation to the CDW transitions in pure uranium.

Book Synopsis Crystal Structure Variations in Alpha Uranium at Low Temperatures by :
Download or read book Crystal Structure Variations in Alpha Uranium at Low Temperatures written by and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unusual temperature dependence of the elastic moduli and other physical properties of alpha uranium near 43 deg K which have been previously reported to be correlated with changes in atomic position and with cell dimensions. The atom position parameter, y, decreases to a minimum at 43 deg K and then rapidly rises on further cooling, as shown both by x-ray and neutron data. The asub>0 and bsub>0 cell dimensions decrease to a minimum at 43 deg K and then rapidly increase, giving a large negative linear expansion coefficient in the range 43 to 18 deg K; the c0 dimension contracts on cooling to 43 deg K and decreases even more rapidly below this temperature thus giving a higher positive linear expansion coefficient in the 43 to 18 deg K range. Neutron diffraction experiments disclose the existence of additional reflections at the lower temperatures which are presumably due to a magnetic moment arrangement.
