Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theoretical Elements of Electrical Engineering The first part of the following volume originated from a series of University lectures which I once promised to deliver. This part can, to a certain extent, be considered as an intro duction to my work on Theory and Calculation of Alternating Current Phenomena, leading up very gradually from the ordinary sine wave representation of the alternating current to the graphical representation by polar coordinates, from there to rectangular components of polar vectors, and ultimately to the symbolic representation by the complex quantity. The present work is, however, broader in its scope, in so far as it comprises the fundamental principles not only of alternating, but also of direct currents. The second part is a series of monographs of the more impor tant electrical apparatus, alternating as well as direct current. It is, in a certain respect, supplementary to Alternating Current Phenomena. While in the latter work I have presented the general principles of alternating current phenomena, in the present volume I intended to give a specific discussion of the particular features of individual apparatus. In consequence thereof, this part of the book is somewhat less theoretical, and more descriptive, my intention being to present the most impor tant electrical apparatus in all their characteristic features as regard to external and internal structure, action under normal and abnormal conditions, individually and in connection with other apparatus, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theory and Calculation of Electric Circuits In the twenty years since the first edition of "Theory and Calculation of Alternating Current Phenomena" appeared, electrical engineering has risen from a small beginning to the world's greatest industry; electricity has found its field, as the means of universal energy transmission, distribution and supply, and our knowledge of electrophysics and electrical engineering has increased many fold, so that subjects, which twenty years ago could be dismissed with a few pages discussion, now have expanded and require an extensive knowledge by every electrical engineer. In the following volume I have discussed the most important characteristics of the fundamental conception of electrical engineering, such as electric conduction, magnetism, wave shape, the meaning of reactance and similar terms, the problems of stability and instability of electric systems, etc., and also have given a more extended application of the method of complex quantities, which the experience of these twenty years has shown to be the most powerful tool in dealing with alternating current phenomena. In some respects, the following work, and its companion volume, "Theory and Calculation of Electrical Apparatus," may be considered as continuations, or rather as parts of "Theory and Calculation of Alternating Current Phenomena." With the 4th edition, which appeared nine years ago, "Alternating Current Phenomena" had reached about the largest practical bulk, and when rewriting it for the 5th edition, it became necessary to subdivide it into three volumes, to include at least the most necessary structural elements of our knowledge of electrical engineering. The subject matter thus has been distributed into three volumes: "Alternating Current Phenomena," "Electric Circuits," and "Electrical Apparatus." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Electric Circuit The Magnetic Circuit, is intended to give a student in electrical engineering the theoretical elements necessary for calculation of the performance of dynamo-electric machinery and of transmission lines. The advanced student must be taught to treat every electric machine as a particular combination of electric and magnetic circuits, and to base its performance upon the fundamental theoretical relations rather than upon a separate theory established for each kind of machinery, as is often done. The first chapter is devoted to a review of the direct-current circuit, the next four chapters treat of sine-wave alternating current circuits, and the last two chapters give the fundamental properties of the electrostatic circuit. All the important results and methods are illustrated by numerical problems of which there are over one hundred in the text. The pamphlet is not intended for a beginner, but for a student who has had an elementary descriptive course in electrical engineering and some simple laboratory experiments. The treatment is made as far as possible uniform, so that the student sees analogous relations in the direct-current circuit, in the alternating-current circuit, in the electrostatic circuit, and finally in the magnetic circuit. All matter of purely historical or academic interest, not bearing directly upon the theory of electric machinery, has been left out. An ambitious student will find a more exhaustive treatment in the works mentioned at the end of the pamphlet. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Book of Applied Electricity IN this presentation of a few of the elementary principles that underlie the useful applications of electricity and magnetism, reference has been made to the manifestations of electricity which are most often met with in daily life, without first requiring the reader to survey aspects of the subject which, although of ultimate theoretical importance, are not the basis of the applications with which he is already acquainted. For this reason, it has been sought to make the reader familiar with electric currents and their various effects, pointing out how some of these are applied, before he is introduced to electro statics; for it is considered more important for him to think in volts and amperes than in electrostatic units. In a Work of this size, it would have been impossible to enter into details of real electrical engineering practice without unduly restricting the outline of the principles involved. Only the most elementary mathematics are employed, and the object has been more to help to give an under standing of principles than to provide the equipment for the exact calculations which will be of more profit at a later stage when those principles have been mastered. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Direct and Alternating Current Manual: With Directions for Testing and a Discussion of the Theory of Electrical Apparatus From the text proper are excluded specialized tests and those that are of limited application or require unusual testing facili ties, such tests being described in the appendices to the several experiments. These appendices thus permit a fuller discussion of some of the details of the tests and various modifications than could be included to advantage in the text proper. The tests in general are those that can be performed in any college laboratory. No attempt has been made to make the work exhaustive or complete; on the contrary every effort has been made to eliminate matter of secondary importance and that which is of questionable technical or pedagogical value. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Applied Electricity for Practical Men This volume has been in the process of making during twenty years' experience in teaching Applied Electricity to practical electrical workers; to men who expect to make direct application of the principles given them in the class room to their daily work with commercial circuits and machinery. It is written wholly from the standpoint of the one who puts up and operates electric circuits and apparatus. It does not touch problems of apparatus design. Pure theory is avoided, except as it has direct bearing upon practical matters. The principles stated and the explana tions of apparatus which are ofiered are only such as are necessary in order to present essential elements. They can be elaborated by the instructor as much as he may see fit. Every teacher understands the importance of numerical prob lems in order to make clear the principles and performance of apparatus. It is with this in mind that the set of problems found at the end of each chapter has been made up. Even though the computations demanded in the solution of many of the problems of this book are not required in everyday practical work, it is important to understand how a thing works; and unless one can make a computation regarding it and figure out a numerical result, no clear conceptions have been secured.
