Book excerpt: As is well-known, a control system always works under a variety of accidental or continued disturbances. Therefore, in designing and analysing the control system, stability is the first thing to be considered. Classic control theory was basically limited to a discussion of linear systems with constant coefficients. The fundamental tools for such studies were the Routh-Hurwitz algebraic criterion and the Nyquist geometric criterion. However, modern control theory mainly deals with nonlinear problems. The stability analysis of nonlinear control systems based on Liapunov stability theory can be traced back to the Russian school of stability. In 1944, the Russian mathematician Lurie, a specialist in control theory, discussed the stability of an autopilot. The well-known Lurie problem and the concept of absolute stability are presented, which is of universal significance both in theory and practice. Up until the end of the 1950's, the field of absolute stability was monopolized mainly by Russian scholars such as A. 1. Lurie, M. A. Aizeman, A. M. Letov and others. At the beginning of the 1960's, some famous American mathematicians such as J. P. LaSalle, S. Lefschetz and R. E. Kalman engaged themself in this field. Meanwhile, the Romanian scholar Popov presented a well-known frequency criterion and consequently ma de a decisive breakthrough in the study of absolute stability.

The book is intended as a graduate text as weil as a reference to scientists and engineers involved in the analysis and design of feedback systems. The first version of this book was written in 1983, while I was teach ing at the Department of Systems Science and Mathematics at Washington University in St. Louis. This new edition integrates my subsequent teaching experience gained at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign in 1987, at the Carl-Cranz Gesellschaft in Oberpfaffenhofen in 1987, at the University of California in Berkeley in 1988. In addition to a major rearrangement of the last two Chapters of the first version, this new edition incorporates two additional Chapters at a more elementary level and an exposition of some relevant research findings which have occurred since 1985.

Book excerpt: Nonlinear Control Systems and Power System Dynamics presents a comprehensive description of nonlinear control of electric power systems using nonlinear control theory, which is developed by the differential geometric approach and nonlinear robust control method. This book explains in detail the concepts, theorems and algorithms in nonlinear control theory, illustrated by step-by-step examples. In addition, all the mathematical formulation involved in deriving the nonlinear control laws of power systems are sufficiently presented. Considerations and cautions involved in applying nonlinear control theory to practical engineering control designs are discussed and special attention is given to the implementation of nonlinear control laws using microprocessors. Nonlinear Control Systems and Power System Dynamics serves as a text for advanced level courses and is an excellent reference for engineers and researchers who are interested in the application of modern nonlinear control theory to practical engineering control designs.

Book excerpt: This book is a short primer in engineering mathematics with a view on applications in nonlinear control theory. In particular, it introduces some elementary concepts of commutative algebra and algebraic geometry which offer a set of tools quite different from the traditional approaches to the subject matter. This text begins with the study of elementary set and map theory. Chapters 2 and 3 on group theory and rings, respectively, are included because of their important relation to linear algebra, the group of invertible linear maps (or matrices) and the ring of linear maps of a vector space. Homomorphisms and Ideals are dealt with as well at this stage. Chapter 4 is devoted to the theory of matrices and systems of linear equations. Chapter 5 gives some information on permutations, determinants and the inverse of a matrix. Chapter 6 tackles vector spaces over a field, Chapter 7 treats linear maps resp. linear transformations, and in addition the application in linear control theory of some abstract theorems such as the concept of a kernel, the image and dimension of vector spaces are illustrated. Chapter 8 considers the diagonalization of a matrix and their canonical forms. Chapter 9 provides a brief introduction to elementary methods for solving differential equations and, finally, in Chapter 10, nonlinear control theory is introduced from the point of view of differential algebra.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear Industrial Control Systems presents a range of mostly optimisation-based methods for severely nonlinear systems; it discusses feedforward and feedback control and tracking control systems design. The plant models and design algorithms are provided in a MATLAB® toolbox that enable both academic examples and industrial application studies to be repeated and evaluated, taking into account practical application and implementation problems. The text makes nonlinear control theory accessible to readers having only a background in linear systems, and concentrates on real applications of nonlinear control. It covers: different ways of modelling nonlinear systems including state space, polynomial-based, linear parameter varying, state-dependent and hybrid; design techniques for nonlinear optimal control including generalised-minimum-variance, model predictive control, quadratic-Gaussian, factorised and H∞ design methods; design philosophies that are suitable for aerospace, automotive, marine, process-control, energy systems, robotics, servo systems and manufacturing; steps in design procedures that are illustrated in design studies to define cost-functions and cope with problems such as disturbance rejection, uncertainties and integral wind-up; and baseline non-optimal control techniques such as nonlinear Smith predictors, feedback linearization, sliding mode control and nonlinear PID. Nonlinear Industrial Control Systems is valuable to engineers in industry dealing with actual nonlinear systems. It provides students with a comprehensive range of techniques and examples for solving real nonlinear control design problems.

Book excerpt: Quantitative Feedback Design of Linear and Nonlinear Control Systems is a self-contained book dealing with the theory and practice of Quantitative Feedback Theory (QFT). The author presents feedback synthesis techniques for single-input single-output, multi-input multi-output linear time-invariant and nonlinear plants based on the QFT method. Included are design details and graphs which do not appear in the literature, which will enable engineers and researchers to understand QFT in greater depth. Engineers will be able to apply QFT and the design techniques to many applications, such as flight and chemical plant control, robotics, space, vehicle and military industries, and numerous other uses. All of the examples were implemented using Matlab® Version 5.3; the script file can be found at the author's Web site. QFT results in efficient designs because it synthesizes a controller for the exact amount of plant uncertainty, disturbances and required specifications. Quantitative Feedback Design of Linear and Nonlinear Control Systems is a pioneering work that illuminates QFT, making the theory - and practice - come alive.

Book excerpt: This book provides a unique and alternative approach to the study of nonlinear control systems, with applications. The approach presented is based on the use of algebraic methods which are intrinsically linear, rather than differential geometric methods, which are more commonly found in other reference works on the subject. This allows the exposition to remain simple from a mathematical point of view, and accessible for everyone who has a good understanding of linear control theory. The book is divided into the following three parts: Part 1 is devoted to mathematical preliminaries and to the development of tools and methods for system analysis. Part 2 is concerned with solving specific control problems, including disturbance decoupling, non-interactive control, model matching and feedback linearization problems. Part 3 introduces differential algebraic notions and discusses their applications to nonlinear control and system theory. With numerous examples used to illustrate theoretical results, this self-contained and comprehensive volume will be of interest to all those who have a good basic knowledge of standard linear control systems.
