Book excerpt: This book discusses possibilities and perspectives for designing and practical realization of novel intensive gamma-ray crystal-based light sources that can be constructed through exposure of oriented crystals—linear, bent and periodically bent, to beams of ultrarelativistic positrons and electrons. The book shows case studies like the tunable light sources based on periodically bent crystals that can be designed with the state-of-the-art beam facilities. A special focus is given to the analysis of generation of the gamma rays because the current technologies based on particle motion in the magnetic field become inefficient or incapable to achieve the desired gamma rays’ intensities. It is demonstrated that the intensity of radiation from crystal-based light sources can be made comparable to or even higher than what is achievable in conventional synchrotrons and undulators operating although in the much lower photon energy range. By exploring the coherence effects, the intensity can be boosted by orders of magnitude. The practical realization of such novel light sources will lead to the significant technological breakthroughs and societal impacts similar to those created earlier by the developments of lasers, synchrotrons and X-rays free-electron lasers. Readers learn about the underlying fundamental physics and familiarize with the theoretical, experimental and technological advances made during last two decades in exploring various features of investigations into crystal-based light sources. This research draws upon knowledge from many research fields, such as material science, beam physics, physics of radiation, solid-state physics and acoustics, to name but a few. The authors provide a useful introduction in this emerging field to a broad readership of researchers and scientists with various backgrounds and, accordingly, make the book as self-contained as possible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ideas of making gamma-ray lasers and focussing gamma rays have fascinated scientists for many years. Over the past 30 years a number of important scientific and technological advances have been made which motivated me to propose the research whose results are presented here. Such developments included; the discovery of the Mossbauer Effect, the ability to fabricate perfect single crystals, the ability to structure materials on an atomic scale, the development of synchrotron radiation facilities, and the experimental realization of the consequences of the so-called dynamical theory of x-ray diffraction. Although the consequences of the dynamical theory using x radiation have been thoroughly explored, relatively little research has been done using gamma radiation. The dynamical theory predicts that radiation can pass through perfect single crystals that are 100 times thicker than one would normally expect. A specific goal of the proposed research was to search for this anomalous transmission effect using gamma radiation. This was to be accomplished by making measurements on radioactively doped single crystals. My general goal in proposing this research was to begin to provide a foundation of experimental evidence in this new field of gamma-ray optics which may lead to technical advances that parallel those in atomic, optical, and solid state physics, e.g., focusing, lasers, enhanced or inhibited spontaneous emission, coupled atom-cavity modes, and superradiance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of coherent radiation sources for sub-angstrom wavelengths - i.e. in the hard X-ray and gamma-ray range - is a challenging goal of modern physics. The availability of such sources will have many applications in basic science, technology and medicine and in particular, they may have a revolutionary impact on nuclear and solid state physics, as well as on the life sciences. The present state-of-the-art lasers are capable of emitting electromagnetic radiation from the infrared to the ultraviolet, while free electron lasers (X-FELs) are now entering the soft X-ray region. Moving further, i.e. into the hard X and/or gamma ray band, however, is not possible without new approaches and technologies. In this book we introduce and discuss one such novel approach -the radiation formed in a Crystalline Undulator - whereby electromagnetic radiation is generated by a bunch of ultra-relativistic particles channeling through a periodically bent crystalline structure. Under certain conditions, such a device can emit intensive spontaneous monochromatic radiation and even reach the coherence of laser light sources. Readers will be presented with the underlying fundamental physics and be familiarized with the theoretical, experimental and technological advances made during the last one and a half decades in exploring the various features of investigations into crystalline undulators. This research draws upon knowledge from many research fields - such as materials science, beam physics, the physics of radiation, solid state physics and acoustics, to name but a few. Accordingly, much care has been taken by the authors to make the book as self-contained as possible in this respect, so as to also provide a useful introduction to this emerging field to a broad readership of researchers and scientist with various backgrounds. This new edition has been revised and extended to take recent developments in the field into account.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many X-Ray Free-Electron Lasers (X-FELs) have been designed, built and commissioned since the first lasing of the Linac Coherent Light Source in the hard and soft X-ray regions, and great progress has been made in improving their performance and extending their capabilities. Meanwhile, experimental techniques to exploit the unique properties of X-FELs to explore atomic and molecular systems of interest to physics, chemistry, biology and the material sciences have also been developed. As a result, our knowledge of atomic and molecular science has been greatly extended. Nevertheless, there is still much to be accomplished, and the potential for discovery with X-FELs is still largely unexplored. The next generation of scientists will need to be well versed in both particle beams/FEL physics and X-ray photon science. This book presents material from the Enrico Fermi summer school: Physics of and Science with X-Ray Free-Electron Lasers, held at the Enrico Fermi International School of Physics in Varenna, Italy, from 26 June - 1 July 2017. The lectures presented at the school were aimed at introducing graduate students and young scientists to this fast growing and exciting scientific area, and subjects covered include basic accelerator and FEL physics, as well as an introduction to the main research topics in X-FEL-based biology, atomic molecular optical science, material sciences, high-energy density physics and chemistry. Bridging the gap between accelerator/FEL physicists and scientists from other disciplines, the book will be of interest to all those working in the field.

Book excerpt: This dissertation focuses on the investigation of the stiffening of the interatomic potential of a gold lattice under intense optical irradiation. Even though this exotic behavior, predicted by theory, has been investigated experimentally using electron diffraction, its observation is still debated. Here, nanometer-thick foils of gold have been irradiated using a femtosecond optical laser pulse to energy densities higher than previously reported values and subsequently probed using X-rays. At these conditions, the response of laser-excited gold was found to be consistent with theoretical predictions. To go beyond the previous measurement, an experimental platform based on inelastic X-ray scattering at an X-ray Free Electron Laser is presented to circumvent the need for a theoretical model and thus bring an unambiguous observation of this exotic phenomena in laser-excited gold. Such observation would be important to deepen our understanding of the melting behavior of gold under extreme conditions such as the ones generated during ultrafast laser processing of materials.

Book excerpt: The described research provided fundamental theoretical support of the high-energy laser program, particularly with regard to concepts germane to that program several years hence. The work has centered in four major areas: propagation of intense radiation, laser theory, amplifier theory and molecular physics (particularly of the water molecule). This report summarizes the work completed under the contract and provides references to more detailed accounts of that work published elsewhere. Included are abstracts of papers published (or to be published) elsewhere. Among the highlights of the collected final report are a strikingly successful, yet simple, model of the H2O molecule; a very promising scheme for a soft X-ray laser; further advances in the multimode unstable resonator theory; and justification of the rate equation approach to treating lasers with cascade transitions.

Book excerpt: A discussion of the historical development of the X-ray laser and the problem areas preventing its operation is followed by an experimental investigation of some of the most promising approaches to the X-ray laser. An experiment using 66, 40-nanosecond, Nd:glass laser pulses of over 30 joules was unsuccessful in duplicating the Utah X-ray laser experiment. Data was obtained in the experiment through the use of streak pictures, framing pictures, time exposure pictures, closed-circuit television pictures, burn patterns, X-ray detection by film, pumping laser output and transmission energy measurements, and pulse shape measurements of the pumping laser output, reflection and transmission pulses. An experimental investigation of self-focusing in glass and liquids as a possible X-ray laser was also conducted. (Modified author abstract).
