Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes a method for computation of neutron age to the indium resonance in arbitrary mixtures of nuclides. Ages of fission neutrons in a wide variety of modulators were calculated. The method is the Fourier transformed moments solution of the Boltzmann equation, evaluated with multigroup techniques. Initially, the evaluation was for 68 groups; however, the number of groups was systematically reduced until an eleven group set was selected as a reasonable compromise between accuracy and ease of computation. The program not only computes group ages, but also provides a slowing down spectrum of average group fluxes per unit lethargy versus lethargy. Combined with a cross section averaging subroutine, this code could provide all required fast constants for a few group reactor physics problem. The final code will handle any number of groups up to twenty. Input data for any one problem is minimal, the main portion of the input consists of a punched card cross section library. It is an economic, simple to execute, versatile code, which meets the engineering accuracy criteria initially postulated. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Theory of Neutron Slowing Down in Nuclear Reactors focuses on one facet of nuclear reactor design: the slowing down (or moderation) of neutrons from the high energies with which they are born in fission to the energies at which they are ultimately absorbed. In conjunction with the study of neutron moderation, calculations of reactor criticality are presented. A mathematical description of the slowing-down process is given, with particular emphasis on the problems encountered in the design of thermal reactors. This volume is comprised of four chapters and begins by considering the problems of neutron moderation and their importance in all types of reactors. An asymptotic reactor model is described, and the calculation of the elastic scattering frequency is explained. Subsequent chapters focus on the process of slowing down in finite and infinite medium by analyzing capture by individual resonances; resonance integrals in heterogeneous systems; the slowing-down kernels; the spherical harmonics method; statistical methods; and small source theory. The final chapter presents numerical solutions of the Boltzmann equation and covers topics such as the multigroup approach, group constants, and solution of the multigroup equations. This book will be a useful resource for nuclear physicists and engineers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last decade, astrophysical observations of neutron stars — both as isolated and binary sources — have paved the way for a deeper understanding of the structure and dynamics of matter beyond nuclear saturation density. The mapping between astrophysical observations and models of dense matter based on microscopic dynamics has been poorly investigated so far. However, the increased accuracy of present and forthcoming observations may be instrumental in resolving the degeneracy between the predictions of different equations of state. Astrophysical and laboratory probes have the potential to paint to a new coherent picture of nuclear matter — and, more generally, strong interactions — over the widest range of densities occurring in the Universe. This book provides a self-contained account of neutron star properties, microscopic nuclear dynamics and the recent observational developments in multimessenger astronomy. It also discusses the unprecedented possibilities to shed light on long standing and fundamental issues, such as the validity of the description of matter in terms of pointlike baryons and leptons and the appearance of deconfined quarks in the high density regime. It will be of interest to researchers and advanced PhD students working in the fields of Astrophysics, Gravitational Physics, Nuclear Physics and Particle Physics. Key Features: Reviews state-of-the-art theoretical and experimental developments Self-contained and cross-disciplinary While being devoted to a very lively and fast developing field, the book fundamentally addresses methodological issues. Therefore, it will not be subject to fast obsolescence.
