Book excerpt: The Theosophical Movement was started among Western people by Western people, in the country where the preparations for the new Root Race are already going on. One object of the Movement runs along two parallel lines: 1. The union of the West with the East by reviving in the East of the towering eminence which once were hers. 2. The development in the West of that Occultism which is appropriate for it so that it may, in its turn, uplift the Eastern fatherland of virtues. Organisations, like men, tend to fall into ruts of mental and psychic action which, once established, are difficult to obliterate. It is more difficult to touch the heart of those who, crippled by metaphysical dogmatism, have built a hard shell around themselves and contradict a priori that which clashes with their encrusted notions, than to warm up the cockles of the occidental heart, which is neither encumbered with deeply entrenched opinions laid on a foundation of oriental mysticism, nor buttressed with a pride inherited from the past. Heaven’s Light always shines in the heart of every man. That Light is our true Master. All other Masters are but servants of the same Light; in it all Lodges beat to heaven’s own music. Woe to those who, having started in the path with the aid of Madame Blavatsky, shall in any way try to belittle her and her work. “The angered gods have feet of wool.” Those who are partial receive but a limited view of truth. The elementals are partial forms, while the human soul is total and, according to the power and purity of that form which it inhabits, “waits upon the Gods.” Pure motive is prerequisite to True Knowledge. Devotion to others is prerequisite to True Magic. The magic amulet which alone can protect the aspirant from evil is harmlessness and that boundless love of humanity and self-sacrifice which led Buddha to say: “Let the sins of this dark age fall on me.” Motive alone determines whether an out of body experience is horrendous or tremendous. The greatest struggle and yet the highest honour for the man of flesh is to transfer all the love and affection from his little self to all selves, and love them with all his heart. This kind of total yet joyful surrender will please the Higher Self, who the Lord of all living beings and Master of Compassion in the Universe. The evolutionary cycle of the Universal Monad necessitates an eternal spiral journey of spirit into the darkness of matter, with a proportionate obscuration of spirit (though the two are one, active and passive by turns), followed by an inverse ascent of spirit towards its previous state and finally the defeat of matter. The diastole and systole of the heart (one spiral moving inside the other) are caused by the rhythmic movement of Akasha, the Soul of the World. But do not rush to grasp that movement too soon, for when heart beats too fast it destroys life. The Light of Atma-Buddhi is a spiralling force which, if misused, it can kill. It is much easier and safer to sink back into the Eternal than to dive in. Resist without resistance. No replies should be made to attacks. The elementals are mirrors of our own mind and of the mental strata formed by the age, the race, and the nation we are living in. Their action is invariably automatic and unconscious. They can only be contacted through correlations of colours and sounds. Fear them not, nor recoil in horror or repulsion. While the lower mind keeps whirling in a narrow circle, seemingly dead, kept alive by its own motion, the higher mind watches over and waits patiently for its hour to strike. When spirit wills, matter obeys. Whoever feels his heart beating in unison with the great heart of humanity; whoever feels his interests are one with those who are poor and less fortunate than himself; every man or woman who is ready to hold out a helping hand to those who suffer; whoever understands the true meaning of the word “egoism,” is a Theosophist by birth and right. The American Republic was meant to be a brotherhood of nations, and that is the core value of its declaration and constitution, and the symbol of Western Occultism — “a new era in the affairs of the world.” We are all bound together in one living whole. Hence the thoughts and acts of one react upon all, and vice versa. Theosophy is the only universal system of philosophy and high ethics underpinned by Divine Laws, which underlies the religions of every age. Practical Occultism is incidental to the journey along the path. Between theoretical Occultism or Theosophy, and practical Occultism or Occult Science, there is a bottomless pit. Let us all draw closer together in mind and heart, soul and act, and try thus to make that true brotherhood through which alone our universal and personal progress can come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theosophy is the renaissance of ancient spiritualism. Theosophy is Archaic Wisdom-Religion, as taught by Masters and Magi, Sages and Hierophants, Prophets and Philosophers, to the Elect — undisguised by symbols. It is Spiritual Knowledge, reasoned out and corroborated by personal experience. Diogenes Laërtius traces Theosophy to an epoch antedating the dynasty of the Ptolemies. But, in fact, Theosophy is much older: It is the parent stem of Archaic Wisdom. The term was revived in the 3rd century AD by Ammonius Saccas, the Alexandrian Socrates of Neo-Platonism, teacher of Plotinus, and founder of the Eclectic Theosophical System. Briefly, Eclectic Theosophy asserts that: 1. Humanity is a periodic emanation from a single noetic essence and, 2. When by exertion and merit, a mortal soul activates its latent faculties and potencies, it can be re-connected with its immortal noetic origin and source. Hence, the Buddhistic, Vedantic, and Magian or Zoroastrian systems were taught in the Eclectic Theosophical School along with all the philosophies of Greece. It was Theosophy which prompted such men as Hegel, Fichte, and Spinoza, to take up the labours of the old Grecian philosophers and speculate upon the One Substance — the Deity, the Divine All, proceeding from Divine Wisdom. And it was Theosophy that made it possible for great thinkers such as Plotinus, Schelling, and Emerson, to reflect upon man’s divine ancestry. What Theosophy is and is not. By looking inwards at the noumenal worlds and causes, Theosophy is Esoteric Science, par excellence. Exact Science is only concerned with phenomenal worlds and effects. Esoteric Science corroborates Nature’s metaphysics and Divine Laws; Exact Science, Its physics and natural laws. In Its fruition, Theosophy is Inner Knowledge about the divinity of Cosmos and Man, and a noetic progression from the known and knowable, to the unknown and, otherwise, unknowable. And, as such, It lies at the root of every moral philosophy, religion, and science. Theosophy is the world’s tree of knowledge and sum total of all sciences. Sophia is the accumulated wisdom of Divine Beings from the beginning of time, who have willingly accepted the harshness and drudgery of sentient life to help their toiling brothers. Theosophy is not a religion. It is but an analytical science, the ally of every honest religion. Being the culmination and practical demonstration of the Truths underlying every creed, Theosophy is compatible with every religion. It believes in no miracle, whether divine or devilish, and cherishes no anthropomorphic concepts, whether gods or demons. Theosophy discriminates between finite animal man, and Infinite Divine Man, and differs from the Vedantin doctrines. It is not even “esoteric” religion! Every old religion is but a chapter or two of the entire volume of archaic primeval mysteries — Eastern Occultism alone being able to boast that it is in possession of the full secret, with its seven keys. In other words, Theosophy is Religion itself! Loyalty to Truth is Its creed, Brotherhood of all beings, not just men, Its noble aim. Theosophy is Inner Wisdom or Divine Knowledge. It is at the heart of all religions and philosophies from the earliest time to the present day, embracing all domains of mundane knowledge and human endeavour. Yet, It is a practical, and an ethical philosophy, ever transcending self-imposed boundaries to expand consciousness, and to dispel lingering doubts. In short, Theosophy is Supernal Philosophy, Wisdom’s True Love, not mere verbiage. It is a philosophy to live by. Metaphysically, Theosophy is the accumulated testimony and wisdom of the ages. Theosophy is not knowledge of a “God,” It is knowledge of gods, Celestial Knowledge: a shoreless ocean of Everlasting Truth, Love, and Impartiality, monistic through and through. By seeking the One Truth, its allied with the ideals of every seeker of Truth. To fully define Theosophy, we must consider it under all its aspects. By means of Its Golden Precepts, those who are intellectually and ethically fit might gain insights of the inner world of being. There, mystics can see past, present, and future as in a mirror. Theosophy wakes up and frees the Heavenly Man from the clutches of Its outer shadow, so that He can live for others, here on Earth, unconstrained by his earthly jailer, forgetting himself in the midst of the many selves, in the words of a Philaletheian. Ethically, Theosophy is unconditioned love for humanity and for all that lives. Theosophy is philanthropy, par excellence, unconditioned and unreserved love for our fellow human beings and for all that lives, in thought and deed. It alone can restore hope and instil responsibility in a world suffocating from ignorance and its own misdeeds, by mediating between egotism and altruism. Even the great Law of Harmony depends on altruism! Theosophy’s aim and noble mission is to establish a community of spiritual thinkers who, by studying Its precepts and enriching everyday life with Its exalted ethics, can bring about a peaceful realignment of mainstream thought, as a matter of urgency! Warnings to aspirants. Those who do not enter inner life in the Spirit of Brotherhood; Those who try to degrade a noble philosophy into a den for immorality; Those who are ignorant of the dangers of psychic powers; And specially those who have already pledged to live for the World, Beware! Only purity of deed and thought can raise you to the company of your Divine Self.

Book excerpt: The only God whom we should serve is Humanity, and our only cult should be the love of our fellow man. Doing evil towards him, we wound God and make him suffer. This is our religion and only dogma. There now follows the response of Madame Blavatsky to an article by Charles Limousin, Editor of the Journal Acacia. A. The scientific aristocracy is full of vanity and struts on stilts of its own fabrication. B. A ray feeble light from the Sun of Truth worths much more than the artificial lights offered by physiologists and pathologists, and those elevated to the ranks of psychologists. C. The supernatural does not exist in Nature when one knows how to awaken the latent principle that animates matter. D. Divine wisdom rests on esoteric philosophy and facts of nature. E. A solitary ascetic is a living symbol of the most cowardly egotism. F. Universal Esotericism presents a periodic cosmic and human genesis which is logical and based on natural sciences, as well as on a pure transcendental philosophy. G. Budhist Esotericism has nothing to do with the Buddhist religion (note the difference in spelling). H. Theosophy is the forbear of modern science, though greatly transcending it in logic; and its metaphysics are vaster, far more beautiful and powerful than any emanating from a dogmatic cult. I. Happiness cannot exist where Truth is absent and egotism reigns supreme. It is merely a house of cards tumbling down at the first whiff. J-K. As long there is no room in the human heart for love of one’s fellow man for his own sake, and not for personal gratification, poor and rich man alike will always be unhappy. Modern science opposes to a natural force another natural force more powerful on the physical plane. Esoteric science opposes to a physical force, a spiritual or psychic force. L. Theosophists see in the priest of any religion a useless if not a pernicious being. M. The first law of the Sacred Science is never to use one’s knowledge for one’s own interest, but to work with and for others for their health and happiness. N. If a fusion of opposing and competing interests does not come about, individuals and nations will end devouring each other. O. Theosophy has nothing to do with Brahmanism, except to combat its abuses, remove the opium of superstition, and expose ecclesiastical cruelty. P. True Theosophists strive to be useful to their fellows, more especially to the disinherited ones of the world. Q. As long as the Brotherhood of Man remains an empty phrase in the air, progress will accomplish no other function than that of executioner of the poor and the downtrodden. R. As long as moral progress slumbers in inactivity, paralyzed by the ferocious egotism of everybody, the rich as well as the poor, happiness will remain a pie in the sky. S. The Secret Doctrine shows that at the beginning of the periodic evolution of our globe and its beings, the processes of generation offered varieties not even suspected in the modern laboratories. T. The infinite cannot associate with the finite; the unconditioned ignores the conditioned and the limited. Neither Brahmanas nor Bonzes, in their most acute exoteric delirium, have ever accepted the finiteness of Kosmos. U. Material progress, the so-called modern civilisation, has served only to provide the rich with enjoyments unknown in the centuries of barbarism. V. The West has not always refused the hand extended to it by the Eastern Adepts. X. Exoteric Brahmanism will soon be replaced by Esoteric Vedism, and Brotherly Love will bring about a fusion of the two Aryan Races. Z. But the mass has always bitten the hand that offered it help.

Book excerpt: Inflamed by the abnormal fancies and uncanny dreams of an acting Editor of “The Theosophist.” The Esoteric Section of The Theosophical Society is wholly apart from the latter, and owes no allegiance to it. Madame Blavatsky alone is responsible for its members. Let the Theosophical Society break away from the original lines, and show disloyalty in its policy to the Cause and the Original Programme, and Madame Blavatsky will shake it off like dust from her feet. There is no such a thing as “Parent Society”; it has been abolished and replaced by an aggregate body of Theosophical Societies, all autonomous as the States of America are, and all under one Head-President who, together with Madame Blavatsky, champions the Cause against the whole world. Madame Blavatsky does not owe the slightest allegiance to a Council which is liable at any moment to issue silly and untheosophical commands. No more than Madame Blavatsky has Col. Olcott the right of exercising autocracy or papal powers, for both Founders of the Theosophical Society have sworn allegiance to the Fellows, whom they vowed to protect, and teach those who want to be taught; they are not to tyrannize and rule over them. “The sun of truth fears no light and needs no lies.” In his zeal hunting the mare’s nest, the esteemed acting Editor of “The Theosophist” has become more Catholic than the Pope himself. Let the General Council expel Madame Blavatsky for “disloyalty,” if Col. Olcott should be so blind as to fail to see where the loyal friend and his duty lie. Enough of theosophical dogmatism and intolerance! If you want to know yourself ask your enemies, not your friends, and you will find more truth, and profit more by their opinion than by that of those who love you. Plus, an explanation important to all Theosophists introduced by Boris de Zirkoff, a Statement by Madame Blavatsky, and a Joint Note by Col. Olcott and Madame Blavatsky.

This book was released on 2019-05-30 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metaphysical, mystical, and philosophical excerpts from Dr. N.I. Pirogov, Problems of Life: The Diary of an Old Physician. Selected and translated from the Russian by H.P. Blavatsky, with extensive annotations and commentary. The thoughts of the false “I” or “personality,” are mere shadows of the true Individuality and Higher Ego. The records of past events and passing thoughts, even the most trifling ones, are impressed on the imperishable waves of Astral Light, not in the brain alone. Intuition is divine but faith is human, and the misapplication of inner intuition. “Personality,” being the illusion of separateness, is the root cause of all selfishness and evil. It has to be conquered and crushed before the lower is united with its higher counterpart. Loss of mind is due to the paralysis of the higher functions in Kama-Manas, the physical mind and, in cases of incurable insanity, to the severance of the lower self from the Higher Self during a person’s lifetime, thus preventing the reunion of the two. When one falls into a love of self and love of the world, with its pleasures, losing the divine love of God and of the neighbour, he falls from the illusionary life and fear of death to real death. The higher principles, which constitute the essential elements of his humanity perish, and he lives only on the natural plane of his faculties. The “atoms” of Science are not of this earth but belong to quite a different plane. And the atomic theory is on a par only with the undulatory theory of light. The Ether of Space is considerably different from the medium of Science. The chasm between mind and matter is impassable. No theory of evolution or “heredity” will ever cover or explain the mystery. The incessantly rolling and waving Ocean of Life of Dr. Pirogov is the triply manifested Deity of the Occultists — two opposing forces of spirituality and animalism eternally reacting upon each other, Universal Mind, and Eternal Atom. The immortal Higher Ego (Nous) is man’s true Individuality, that keeps reincarnating in a new personality at every birth. Dr. Pirogov’s purely natural idealism is a spiritual perception of eternal truths, that no scientific sophistry could destroy or even blunt. He esteems Truth higher than Science. Physical Science calls “atoms” that which the Occultists regard as particles or molecules. The real Atoms are the inner principles and the intelligent, spiritual guides of the cells and particles they inform. Man is produced in the image of God or Divine Nature. Every cell in the human organism corresponds with a like “cell” in the divine organism or the manifested universe. The “I” of man or Microcosm, and the Universe or Macrocosm are illusions, inseparable and interdependent, but illusion nevertheless. The human mind, or lower manas, is a direct ray or reflection of a Higher Principle, the Noetic Mind. The latter is the reincarnating Ego, which old Aryan philosophers call Manasaputras, the “Sons of Mind” or Mahat — the Universal Cosmic Mind. Dr. Pirogov can hardly be taken to task and declared unscientific, in accepting the existence of a seven-dimensional space in co-ordination with the seven states of consciousness. In the course of natural evolution our “brain-mind” will be replaced by a finer and more spiritually receptive organism, helped by the sixth and the seventh senses. A Higher Principle may be independent of the matter it rules, but only when outside of space and time. God is the centre; the Intellectual-Principle, an unmoving circle; Soul, a circle in motion. As our mind is but the product of Universal Mind, so is the latter but a differentiated ray of the Absolute Mind or No-Mind — a state of Perfect Unconsciousness. Atom is not the smallest constituent unit of matter, not even a mathematical point, it is an immutable Entity, a reality within an appearance — the molecule being in Occult Philosophy but a figment of maya-illusion. It may be described as a compact or crystallized point of divine Energy and Ideation. Occultism affirms that there is no such thing as inert, dead, or even inorganic matter. Time is abstract motion in space, i.e., force acting in space and transforming itself, by this very action, into substance. In philosophy the term empirical is the product of experience and observation, plus Science. The “sensing principle” in us is an entity capable of acting outside as inside its material body; and it is certainly independent of any organ in particular, in its actions — although during its incarnation it manifests itself through its physical organs. Our Higher Ego is a ray of the Universal Mind, individualized for the span of a cosmic life-cycle, during which time it gets experience through almost numberless reincarnations or rebirths, before returning to its Parent-Source. There are two minds in man, two aspects of the same divine principle, the higher or true Individuality, and the lower or Personality. It is these two that during our lifetime are in incessant struggle, the one trying to gravitate heavenward, the other dragged down by its animal nature to the earth earthy. Nothing that takes place, no manifestation however rapid or weak, can ever be lost from the skandhic records of a man’s life. The Universal Memory preserves every motion, the slightest wave and feeling that ripples the waves of differentiated nature, whether of man or of Universe. The metaphysician and the theosophist will applaud almost every word Dr. Pirogov says, regretting only that men of such profoundly intuitional nature should be so rare among the men of science.
