Book excerpt: The book of Romans has rightly been called "the Constitution of Christianity." In this one letter are recorded the doctrines of justification, sanctification, divine condemnation, divine election, the perseverance of the saints, total depravity, the last judgment, the fall of man, the revelation of God in nature, and so much more. In his commentary, Dr. Kroll indicates that the letter to the church in Rome was Paul's way of depositing a handbook of Christian doctrine into the capital of the Roman Empire.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Revelation is a work of profound theology. But its literary form makes it impenetrable to many modern readers and open to all kinds of misinterpretations. Richard Bauckham explains how the book's imagery conveyed meaning in its original context and how the book's theology is inseparable from its literary structure and composition. Revelation is seen to offer not an esoteric and encoded forecast of historical events but rather a theocentric vision of the coming of God's universal kingdom, contextualised in the late first-century world dominated by Roman power and ideology. It calls on Christians to confront the political idolatries of the time and to participate in God's purpose of gathering all the nations into his kingdom. Once Revelation is properly grounded in its original context it is seen to transcend that context and speak to the contemporary church. This study concludes by highlighting Revelation's continuing relevance for today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a study in the principles given in the book of Revelation. The difficulties the church experienced during the first century, persecution, natural disasters, and social difficulties, are similar to the problems the modern church faces. These principles were given to instruct the servants of Christ in how to deal with and survive these events which come to all believers at one time or another. Clearly understanding who we are in Christ will enable us to be victorious. Sherman Critser graduated from Anderson College in 1976 with a BA in Biblical Studies. He then graduated from Anderson School of Theology in 1979 with a Masters in Missiology and later his Doctor of Ministry degree in 2005. In 1979 Sherman and his wife, Kay, began their missionary assignments in Tanzania. In 2005 Sherman became Regional Coordinator for Africa for Global Missions of the Church of God. The basis for this writing was Sherman's DMin Thesis, originally titled: Equipping the Church in Africa for Difficult times: A Pastoral Training Program from the Book of Revelation and was originally for the church in Africa. David Miller graduated from Anderson College in 1974 and spent three years in local church ministry in South San Francisco, California. Dave earned the Master of Divinity from Asbury Theological Seminary in 1980. As a missionary to Bolivia, Dave's chief ministries were itinerant evangelism, Bible training, and editor of the Church of God magazine La Trompeta for 14 years. In 2002, Compass Direct hired him as Managing Editor which reports on global persecution of Christians. Dave has authored three books in English, The Lord of Bellavista, The Path and the Peacemakers and Song of the Andes, and one work in Spanish, La Vida en el Espíritu; Descubriendo una relación sana y santa con Dios.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the controversy over the role of women in the church, complementarians/hierarchists routinely claim to be upholding the "traditional" position. Like the little boy who declared that "the emperor has no clothes," J. G. Brown exposes the fallacies in this claim. The authentic traditional interpretation of passages such as 1 Timothy 2:11-14 differs substantially from contemporary readings, whether egalitarian or hierarchist. Most prominent Protestant exegetes--from Luther and Calvin through those in the early nineteenth century--understood creation ordinances (male headship/female subordination) as foundational to the temporal world, not the church. An Historian Looks at 1 Timothy 2:11-14 brings history and theology together in a fresh way, with startling implications for the ongoing debate.
