Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theology of the Old Testament, Vol. 1 Actual term barit, as certain all too naive critics seem to imagine (for a discussion of the avoidance of the word by many of the prophets, cf. E.g. Pp. 51 but the fact that every expression of the OT which is determinative for its faith rests on the explicit or implicit assumption that a free act of God, consummated in history, has raised Israel to the rank of the People of God, in whom the nature and will of God are to be revealed. The word 'covenant', therefore, is so to speak a convenient symbol for an assurance much wider in scope and controlling the formation of the national faith at its deepest level, without which Israel would not be Israel. As an epitome of the deal ings of God in history the 'covenant' is not a doctrinal concept, with the help of which a complete corpus of dogma can be worked out, but the characteristic description of a living process, which was begun at a particular time and at a particular place, in order to reveal a divine reality unique in the whole history of religion. Reference to this living process in every single paragraph of this work will not escape the attentive reader. It seems to have at first attracted little attention even in Europe, owing probably to the fact that it was written in French and published in Paris. Schultz, who mentions a smaller work by Kayser of the same date, had evidently overlooked this one, when, in 1888, he issued the last edition Of his Theologie. The book was first brought to the notice Of Americans by the Presbyterian Quarterly, in 1888. The review Of it then published was very favorable. In fact, the reviewer said of it: On the whole, we regard it as the best Theology of the Old Testa ment that has yet been published. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Testament Theology, Vol. 1 of 2: The Religion of Revelation in Its Pre-Christian Stage of Development The work of Dr. Hermann Schultz on Old Testament Theology has long been a standard authority on the important subject of which it treats. The author is one of the most accomplished exponents of that school of theological thought which is at present dominant in Germany. He stands high in the esteem of all parties; and it is thought by many that he has succeeded in discovering the via media between the positions of Biblical scholars like Delitzsch on the one hand and Stade on the other. Biblical theology is a subject certain to receive in the immediate future from the Christian public, both of Great Britain and America, a steadily increasing share of attention. One of the characteristics of the age is the emphasis with which the Christian Churches are declaring that it is their duty as well as their privilege to interpret Scripture in the full light of present-day research. Hence the growing anxiety to know what the books of the Bible actually teach. It is this question which Dr. Schultz has undertaken to answer, from the historical point of view, in so far as the Old Testament is concerned. He must satisfy himself as to the probable extent the book he is investigating circulated among the Jews, for there is always the possibility that the literature studied may be the expression of individual opinion only, or at most, of the school of thought to which its author belonged. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Testament Theology, Vol. 1 of 2: Or Historical Account of the Teaching of Jesus and of Primitive Christianity According to the New Testament Sources The following work, which has now the honour of being translated into English, and which contains the main pro duct of many years of theological occupation with the New Testament, has met with a more favourable reception in Germany than I could have expected. Not that my anti cipations that it would displease the extreme parties on right and left have been falsified; for even the moderate party now dominant in Germany, whilst regarding it with more respect, has treated it as alien to itself. All the more encouraging is that practical criticism, which consists in the eager purchase, diligent reading, and warm praise of a book by susceptible readers. This experience pleases me the more that I View New Testament theology as the source destined to rejuvenate our traditional Church and doctrinal systems, concerning the insufficiency of which our age, with all its other differences, is pretty unanimous. There are undoubtedly needs and feelings in England like our own, though, perhaps, the power of orthodox scholasticism may not be so great, and the inclina tion to abandon tradition and go back to the Holy Scriptures much stronger; and therefore I hail it as a new sign of the spiritual fellowship of German and English Protestantism, that my effort to promote a deeper and freer conception of the New Testament religion has met with sympathy on the other Side of the Channel, and is to gain a wider Sphere of influence through a careful and intelligent translation. Biblical theology, as a science still in its infancy, is liable to more uncertainty as to what exactly are its idea and the limits of its task than any other branch of theological science. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Old Testament, Vol. 1 of 2 But to have done this at all satisfactorily would have entailed lengthened discussions which would have given the book a polemical aspect it was desired to avoid, and have swelled it to an inconvenient bulk. In a few cases where Bleek's decisions appeared most at variance with those of sober and conservative critics, references have been given to works where what is thought to be the sounder view is maintained. But, on the whole, the book has been left to stand on its own merits, and to speak for itself. Thus, it is believed, its real usefulness has been best consulted. The student will be furnished with the data on which Bleek's own conclusions have been based, but he will not be compelled to accept these conclusions as indubitable without further reflection. He may trust to the facts being, on the whole, fairly and impartially stated; but he must not be surprised if in some instances Bleek's deductions from the facts fail to commend themselves to his judgment. He will be careful to distinguish between the phenomena which Bleek brings so clearly before his notice and the explanations of the phenomena he gives. These explanations may be, and sometimes are, precarious, if not erroneous. These, however, which are rather errors of judgment than of principle, are not such as to affect materially the value of the work. Its general spirit or tendency, it is believed, cannot be otherwise than beneficial, or the translation would never have been attempted. Those who have hitherto been strangers to the controversies of the day, and have accepted, without doubt or question, the traditional views of the authorship and composition of the Books of the Old Testament, must be prepared to meet with much that is new, strange, and at first sight even startling, in Bleek's investigations and their results. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Testament Theology: Or the History of the Hebrew Religion From the Year 800 Professor Driver's admirable work is a new departure altogether in English literature. I am very fortunate in having been able to consult it while reading the proofs of the following pages. The appearance of such works means that our Christian teachers are turning with a new devotion to the Old Testament, and are demanding all possible aid in its study, and in the investigation of the arena on which Christianity appeared. The present volume aims to serve this study by a constructive View of the facts of Hebrew religious life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Preparation for Christ in the Old Testament, Vol. 1 Knowledge had increased and thought about what men knew had altered, and the result was that certain things, Which the earlier men could say without any hesitation, were apt to sound a little perplexing to the later generation. They needed to say What they believed about the origin of the world differently, because they were thinking differently about the world. Perhaps we can understand the situation best, if we think of how a man would write about the World at the time when it was still believed that the sun and moon went round the earth, and of how another would write after it had become impossible to believe that. To the one man this earth was the centre of the universe the sun and moon circled round it to serve its ends. The sun literally rose in the morning and set at night. It rose, too, to bring light for man's work, and it set to bring darkness for his sleep. It changed in its course to cause spring for his sowing, and autumn for his harvest. To the other the earth is a mere planet in a solar system, which belongs to the sun instead of having the sun for its servant, and the sun with its attendant earth is a mere point in a vaster system. It is obvious that a description of the origins of this world Which fitted the earlier conditions of knowledge would not fit the later, but would demand restatement. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Dictionary of the Bible, Vol. 1: Dealing With Its Language, Literature, and Contents, Including the Biblical Theology; A-Feasts Give heed to teaching.' Perhaps the Church of Christ has never given sufficient heed to teaching since the earliest and happiest days. In our own day the importance of teaching, or, as we sometimes call it, expository preaching, has been pressed home through causes that are various yet never accidental; and it is probable that in the near future more heed will be given by the Church to teaching than has ever been given before. As a contribution towards the furnishing of the Church for that great work, this dictionary OF the bible is published. It is a Dictionary of the Old and New Testaments, together with the Old Testament Apocrypha, according to the Authorized and Revised English Versions, and with constant reference to the original tongues. Every effort has been used to make the information it contains reasonably full, trustworthy, and accessible. As to fulness. In a Dictionary of the Bible one expects that the words occurring in the Bible, and which do not explain themselves, will receive some explanation. The present Dictionary more nearly meets that expectation than any Dictionary that has hitherto been published. Articles have been written on the names of all Persons and Places, on the Antiquities and Archaeology Of the Bible, on its Ethnology, Geology, and Natural History, on Biblical Theology and Ethic, and even on the Obsolete or archaic words occurring in the English Versions. The greater number of the articles are of small compass, for care has been exercised to exclude vague generalities as well as unaccepted idiosyncrasies but there are many articles which deal with important and difficult subjects, and extend to considerable length. Such, for example, and to mention only one, is the article in the first volume on the Chronology Of the New Testament.
