Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jonathan Edwards lived in an age in which the doctrine of the Trinity was sometimes openly repudiated and more often quietly ignored. But as this important book shows, Edwards in fact took care to creatively fashion the Trinity into the centerpiece of his Christian life and work. Through her pursuit of Edwards's writings, especially his lifelong intellectual diary, Amy Plantinga Pauw traces the way Edwards established the basic outlines of his trinitarian thought when he was only twenty years old, and how the doctrine continued to run like a subterranean river throughout his famed career as a pastor and teacher. Recognizing the centrality of the Trinity in Edwards's thought both nuances our understanding of his Puritan inheritance and challenges the narrowness of Edwards's enduring legacy as the preacher of "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two questions lie at the heart of this rich, suggestive book: What are the theological implications of worship? and What are the liturgical implications of theology? Convinced that worship and theology are integrally related, the authors of A More Profound Alleluia show in practical terms how liturgy and doctrine fruitfully illuminate each other. Each chapter pairs an element of the worship service with related Christian teachings, clearly demonstrating how the great doctrines of the faith find their natural expression in the drama of worship and how the liturgy in turn finds its corollary in doctrine. The interrelation of theology and worship is illustrated with anecdotes from congregational life, resources drawn from church history, and themes from novels and films. Each chapter also includes two hymn texts that exemplify orthodox doctrine communicated through song. A More Profound Alleluia will be a valuable text for courses in theology or worship, will help worship leaders to plan services with greater theological depth, and will enhance worship for Christian believers generally. Book excerpt: The Reformation-era writings that make up the Lutheran Confessions remain lively resources for Christian ministry and mission today. Because each of the documents within the Book of Concord was written with a specific context and rhetorical purpose in mind, each has its own compelling story and objectives. Luther’s catechisms present the faith for daily life at the grass-roots level, with teaching elements that we might now view as typical of social media and multimedia. The Augsburg Confession and its Apology provide an adaptable foundation for preaching, teaching, church organization, and dialogue that is rooted in the promise of Christ, received through faith. Fifteen years after the Diet of Worms, the Smalcald Articles reveal yet another “Here I stand” moment for Luther. Finally, the Formula of Concord shows how the next generations of Lutherans used collaboration and consensus as they wrestled with important themes of faith and life. In summary, as these texts engage us with their stories, they invite us to consider what is most important about our journeys of faith and Christian witness in today’s twenty-first-century contexts.

The endemic problems facing America today are staggering. We need change and restoration. But where to begin? In Shalom and the Community of Creation Randy Woodley offers an answer: learn more about the Native American 'Harmony Way,' a concept that closely parallels biblical shalom. Doing so can bring reconciliation between Euro-Westerners and indigenous peoples, a new connectedness with the Creator and creation, an end to imperial warfare, the ability to live in the moment, justice, restoration -- and a more biblically authentic spirituality. Rooted in redemptive correction, this book calls for true partnership through the co-creation of new theological systems that foster wholeness and peace.

Book excerpt: The book discusses this long-standing relationship from a historical point of view, which in the past has been sometimes indifferent, sometimes fruitful and sometimes full of conflict. The relationship continues well into the present. While Christian fundamentalists attack evolution and related palaeontological findings as well as the geological evidence of the age of the Earth, mainstream theologians strive for a fruitful dialogue between science and religion. Much of what is written and discussed today can only be understood, when the historical perspective is added. This book considers the following topics: the development of geology from mythological approaches towards the European Enlightenment, Biblical or Geological Flood and the age of the Earth, geology within 'religious' organizations, biographical case studies of geological clerics and religious geologists, religion and evolution, historical aspects of creationism and its motives.

Book excerpt: The development of Chinese Christian thought in history is based on actual historical events and forsaking the slavish aspect of humanity (the theory of the superiority of Western culture when Western Christianity was introduced to China from the beginning) while this dialectical relationship occurred in the interactive relationship between different events in history and is organically linked. Therefore, this research is an interdisciplinary study including theology, religious thought, comparative theology, history, culture, hermeneutics, philosophy, politics, economics and international relations. As Marx once suggested, there is a kind of national spirit performing in different fields, and this national spirit follows each nation as it enters the stage in history. We will see similar phenomena in the study of Chinese Christianity. It is like the interpretation of the gospel by the Greek culture of the past, the European culture to today's American culture also give an interpretation of the gospel. At the present time, the Chinese people are trying to interpret the gospel from their own culture as well. It, of course, involves the process by which the Chinese find their own role in the gospel of Christ. This is a discovery and in effective action to their own role by the Chinese Christian groups, and becomes an interpretation of Chinese Christianity. This relates to a diachronic trait of human experience, the continuous reflection on the gospel, that correlates episodic and configurative. The fragments of sages from various periods, such as Gützlaff, James Legge, Jing Dianying, Watchman Nee, Francis Wei and T.C. Chao, have become intertextuality in the process. Of course, this is also a configurative and re-configurative. Through the process of time, the trial in the diachronic integrates into a testable interpretation. This interpretation enables Chinese Christian theology to find its identity and its contribution through this status. It also breaks the idol of the superiority of Western culture and subverts the idol of the feudal system in Chinese culture as testimony.

Book excerpt: "Has science made religion intellectually implausible? Does it rule out the existence of a personal God? In an age of science can we really believe that the universe has a "purpose"? And, finally, doesn't religion hold much of the blame for the present ecological crisis?" "These questions form the nucleus of today's debate between science and religion. This book is a guide for that debate, identifying the questions, isolating the issues and pointing to ways the questions can be resolved." "There are four possible ways, says John F. Haught, that we can view the relationship between religion and science. First, they can stand in complete opposition - the conflict position. Or, we can believe they are so different that conflict is impossible - the contrast position. A third approach holds that while science and religion are distinct, each has important implications for the other. A fourth way views them as different but mutually supportive."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved

Book excerpt: Study the life, ministry, and teaching of Jesus Christ in harmony—with all the relevant material from the Gospels placed side by side on the page and in chronological sequence. The goal of this volume by author and teacher J. Dwight Pentecost is to help you know Jesus better by getting a clearer picture of him through the four Gospels—the books that directly depict his life, his ministry, and his heart. To show the harmony of the gospels, passages are arranged in parallel columns when more than one is cited so that you can easily see the accounts beside one another. This simple, logical presentation of the complete parallel text with the outline greatly simplifies your study of Christ's life. A Harmony of the Words and Works of Jesus Christ is ideal for use with its companion volume, The Words and Works of Jesus Christ, a comprehensive study of the life of Christ. A Harmony of the Words and Works of Jesus Christ also makes an outstanding parallel Scripture text for any study of the gospels or the life of Christ. All Scripture is in the New International Version (NIV).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current discussions in the West on the relation of science and religion focus mainly on science''s uneasy relationship with the traditional Judeo-Christian view of life. But a parallel controversy exists in the Muslim world regarding ways to integrate science with Islam. As physicist Taner Edis shows in this fascinating glimpse into contemporary Muslim culture, a good deal of popular writing in Muslim societies attempts to address such perplexing questions as: - Is Islam a "scientific religion"? - Were the discoveries of modern science foreshadowed in the Quran? - Are intelligent design conjectures more appealing to the Muslim perspective than Darwinian explanations? Edis examines the range of Muslim thinking about science and Islam, from blatantly pseudoscientific fantasies to comparatively sophisticated efforts to "Islamize science." From the world''s strongest creationist movements to bizarre science-in-the-Quran apologetics, popular Muslim approaches promote a view of natural science as a mere fact-collecting activity that coexists in near-perfect harmony with literal-minded faith. Since Muslims are keenly aware that science and technology have been the keys to Western success, they are eager to harness technology to achieve a Muslim version of modernity. Yet at the same time, they are reluctant to allow science to become independent of religion and are suspicious of Western secularization. Edis examines all of these conflicting trends, revealing the difficulties facing Muslim societies trying to adapt to the modern technological world. His discussions of both the parallels and the differences between Western and Muslim attempts to harmonize science and religion make for a unique and intriguing contribution to this continuing debate.
