Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over more than two millennia, the world's leading religious traditions have provided the guidance in questions of when war can be justified, and of what methods and targets are permissible in war. Linking deep historical analysis to contemporary issues, this volume provides insight to the understanding of the role and influence of religion in the state politics. The book examines the norms of war in Hinduism, in Theravada Buddhism, in Japanese religion, in Judaism, in Roman Catholic Christianity, in Eastern Orthodox Christianity, in Protestant Christianity, in Shia Islam and in Sunni Islam, and discusses norms of war in cross-religious perspective.--Publisher's description.

Book Synopsis Preaching and Preachers by : D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones
Download or read book Preaching and Preachers written by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2012-01-24 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Some may object to my dogmatic assertions; but I do not apologize for them. Every preacher should believe strongly in his own method; and if I cannot persuade all of the rightness of mine, I can at least stimulate them to think and to consider other possibilities. I can say quite honestly that I would not cross the road to listen to myself preaching, and the preachers whom I have enjoyed most have been very different indeed in their method and style. But my business is not to describe them but to state what I believe to be right, however imperfectly I have put my own precepts into practice. I can only hope that the result will be of some help, and especially to young preachers called to this greatest of all tasks, and especially in these sad and evil times. With many others I pray that 'The Lord of the harvest may thrust forth' many mighty preachers to proclaim 'the unsearchable riches of Christ!'"

Book excerpt: Ground-breaking book that has shaken the foundations of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. "Ellen Gould White in the mid 1800s began a career that led to her becoming the acknowledged "personage" of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. A century and a quarter afterward, in the mid-1970s, one of her longtime devotees began to disclose evidence from his research that raised sobering questions as to the official church position on Ellen White.... This book grew out of the author's own quest for answers to compelling questions concerning this woman.... The White Lie reveals a portion of Walter Rea's evidence that much of what several generations have been taught concerning Ellen White's writings simply is not true -- or at the minimum, it is enormously overstated. The books of numerous writers of her time, and earlier, are known to have been accessible to her. The large number of them that were in personal collection at her death in 1915 were inventoried and have been available to the White Estate staff.
Book Synopsis The Tree and the Canoe by : Joël Bonnemaison
Download or read book The Tree and the Canoe written by Joël Bonnemaison and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This personal observation of Tanna, an island in the southern part of the Vanuatu archipelago, presents an extraordinary case study of cultural resistance. Based on interviews, myths and stories collected in the field, and archival research, The Tree and the Canoe analyzes the resilience of the people of Tanna, who, when faced with an intense form of cultural contact that threatened to engulf them, liberated themselves by re-creating, and sometimes reinventing, their own kastom. Following a lengthy history of Tanna from European contact, the author discusses in detail original creation myths and how Tanna people revived them in response to changes brought by missionaries and foreign governments. The final chapters of the book deal with the violent opposition of part of the island population to the newly established National Unity government.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the present day, when there is renewed interest in the concept of human rights and in the application of this concept to the problems of government,! it may be instructive to review an eighteenth-century dispute which was concerned precisely with these themes. Nor should the investigation be any less interesting because the disputants were Edmund Burke and Thomas Paine: both these men have also been the object of renewed attention and study in recent years. Critical work on the biography and bibliography of Paine is being done by Professor Aldridge and Col. Richard Gimbel respectively;2 while Burke is being well looked after, not only by the able team of experts who, under the leadership of Professor Copeland, are engaged in producing the critical edition of his Correspondence, but also by such individual scholars as D. C. Bryant, C. B. Cone, T. H. D. Mahoney, 3 P. J. Stanlis, C. Parkin, F. Canavan, and A. Cobban. But though Burke and Paine are being studied separately, little work appears to have been done on the relationship between them, apart from an 4 essay by Professor Copeland published more than twelve years ago. It is hoped that the present study, while it does not claim to add anything to the facts about Burke and Paine already known to his- 1 See Nehemiah Robinson, The Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
