Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the refereed proceedings of the Second Scandinavian Conference on Information Systems (SCIS), held in Turku, Finland, in August 2011. Inspired by the fact that Turku is the cultural capital of Europe in 2011, SCIS invited contributions that address the cultural impact of the latest technologies, e.g., social software, or that target cross-cultural issues of the IT profession itself. The resulting selection of papers in this volume reflects these topics. The 10 papers accepted were presented in one single track and cover topics such as the usage of social media platforms, the socio-economic consequences of novel technologies in application areas like healthcare or energy industries, and cultural differences in software development and maintenance.

Book excerpt: The Media Welfare State: Nordic Media in the Digital Era comprehensively addresses the central dynamics of the digitalization of the media industry in the Nordic countries—Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland—and the ways media organizations there are transforming to address the new digital environment. Taking a comparative approach, the authors provide an overview of media institutions, content, use, and policy throughout the region, focusing on the impact of information and communication technology/internet and digitalization on the Nordic media sector. Illustrating the shifting media landscape the authors draw on a wide range of cases, including developments in the press, television, the public service media institutions, and telecommunication.

Book excerpt: The home is under siege both because it is an enormous potential market and because of changing human behaviours. It is also interesting as a platform for new technology and for analysis of everyday life, as in this essay. We will describe the home as a context where the interactors are humans (inhabitants), things (artefacts in the home), and information. The interactions at home are activities and routines. This essay presents and structures thoughts on the organization, use and decoration of the home, discussing a particular home. The text continues the exploration of interior design started in “InTerior design – Konvolute” (Gulliksson web). It is also yet another piece in a puzzle to understand information technology in the future everyday life. The next chapters will introduce the floor plan of the ground floor @Lummerstigen 12 which will be our reference in the discussions that follows. The point of view is limited to western middle class and much of the discussion will be further constrained by a typical family house @Lummerstigen 12 in Sweden where a pair of middle aged parents live with 3 children in their late teens. Further characterization will be described where it applies in the discussions. After the floor plan has been introduced we will examine some already existing pervasive environments in the home: climate, wiring, lighting and soundscape. We work our way through the hallway, living room and the kitchen. This will in other words be yet another tour of a home and the structure of it will roughly follow the one used by Abercombie, i.e. discussing rooms, enclosings, furniture, decoration and artifacts including technical appliances. Along the tour references to the literature and ideas from research will be given.

Book excerpt: Journalism in Context is an accessible introduction to the theory and practice of journalism in a changing world. The book looks at the way in which power flows through media organisations influencing not only what journalists choose to present to their audiences but how they present it and then in turn what their audiences do with it. Using examples from across the world, as well as from her own research, Angela Phillips uses them to explain complex theoretical concepts. She invites readers to consider how news is influenced by the culture from which it emerges, as well as the way it is paid for and how different countries have approached the problem of ensuring that democracy is served by its media, rather than being undermined by it. Journalism has always been an early adopter of new technologies and the most recent changes are examined in the light of a history in which, although platforms keep on changing, journalism always survives. The questions raised here are important for all students of journalism and all those who believe that journalism matters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Approaching Dialogue" has its primary focus on the theoretical understanding and empirical analysis of talk-in-interaction. It deals with conversation in general as well as talk within institutions against a backdrop of Conversation Analysis, context-based discourse analysis, social pragmatics, socio-cultural theory and interdisciplinary dialogue analysis.People s communicative projects, and the structures and functions of talk-in-interaction, are analyzed from the most local sequences to the comprehensive communicative activity types and genres. A second aim of the book is to explore the possibilities and limitations of dialogism as a general epistemology for cognition and communication. On this point, it portrays the dialogical approach as a major alternative to the mainstream theories of cognition as individually-based information processing, communication as information transfer, and language as a code. Stressing aspects of interaction, joint construction and cultural embeddedness, and drawing upon extensive theoretical and empirical research carried out in different traditions, this book aims at an integrating synthesis. It is largely interdisciplinary in nature, and has been written in such a way that it can be used at advanced undergraduate courses in linguistics, sociopragmatics of language, communication studies, sociology, social psychology and cognitive science.About the author: Per Linell holds a Ph.D. in linguistics and has been professor within the interdisciplinary graduate program of Communication Studies at the University of Linkoping, Sweden, since 1981. He has published widely in the fields of discourse studies and social pragmatics of language.
