This measure was first introduced for the needs of quantum field theory and can be described informally as a probability measure on the space of connections modulo gauge transformations on a principal bundle. We consider the case of a bundle over a compact orientable surface. Our construction is based on the discrete Yang-Mills theory of which we give a full acount. We are able to take its continuum limit and to define a pathwise multiplicative process of random holonomy indexed by the class of piecewise embedded loops. We study in detail the links between this process and a white noise and prove a result of asymptotic independence in the case of a semi-simple structure group. We also investigate global Markovian properties of the measure related to the surgery of surfaces.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collecting together contributed lectures and mini-courses, this book details the research presented in a special semester titled “Geometric mechanics – variational and stochastic methods” run in the first half of 2015 at the Centre Interfacultaire Bernoulli (CIB) of the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne. The aim of the semester was to develop a common language needed to handle the wide variety of problems and phenomena occurring in stochastic geometric mechanics. It gathered mathematicians and scientists from several different areas of mathematics (from analysis, probability, numerical analysis and statistics, to algebra, geometry, topology, representation theory, and dynamical systems theory) and also areas of mathematical physics, control theory, robotics, and the life sciences, with the aim of developing the new research area in a concentrated joint effort, both from the theoretical and applied points of view. The lectures were given by leading specialists in different areas of mathematics and its applications, building bridges among the various communities involved and working jointly on developing the envisaged new interdisciplinary subject of stochastic geometric mechanics.

Book excerpt: Sergio Albeverio gave important contributions to many fields ranging from Physics to Mathematics, while creating new research areas from their interplay. Some of them are presented in this Volume that grew out of the Random Transformations and Invariance in Stochastic Dynamics Workshop held in Verona in 2019. To understand the theory of thermo- and fluid-dynamics, statistical mechanics, quantum mechanics and quantum field theory, Albeverio and his collaborators developed stochastic theories having strong interplays with operator theory and functional analysis. His contribution to the theory of (non Gaussian)-SPDEs, the related theory of (pseudo-)differential operators, and ergodic theory had several impacts to solve problems related, among other topics, to thermo- and fluid dynamics. His scientific works in the theory of interacting particles and its extension to configuration spaces lead, e.g., to the solution of open problems in statistical mechanics and quantum field theory. Together with Raphael Hoegh Krohn he introduced the theory of infinite dimensional Dirichlet forms, which nowadays is used in many different contexts, and new methods in the theory of Feynman path integration. He did not fear to further develop different methods in Mathematics, like, e.g., the theory of non-standard analysis and p-adic numbers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work presents a rigorous account of quantum gauge field theory for bundles (both trivial and non-trivial) over compact surfaces. The Euclidean quantum field measure describing this theory is constructed and loop expectation values for a broad class of Wilson loop configurations are computed explicitly. Both the topology of the surface and the topology of the bundle are encoded in these loop expectation values. The effect of well-behaved area - preserving homeomorphisms of the surface is to take these loop expectation values into those for the pullback bundle. The quantum gauge field measure is constructed by conditioning an infinite-dimensional Gaussian measure to satisfy constraints imposed by the topologies of the surface and of the bundle. Holonomies, in this setting, are defined by interpreting the usual parallel-transport equation as a stochastic differential equation.

Subjects discussed in this Work are those treated in the so-called Strasbourg–Zürich Meetings. These meetings occur twice yearly in each of the cities, Strasbourg and Zürich, venues of vibrant mathematical communication and worldwide gatherings. The topical scope of the book includes the study of monochromatic random waves defined for general Riemannian manifolds, notions of entropy related to a compact manifold of negative curvature, interacting electrons in a random background, lp-cohomology (in degree one) of a graph and its connections with other topics, limit operators for circular ensembles, polyharmonic functions for finite graphs and Markov chains, the ETH-Approach to Quantum Mechanics, 2-dimensional quantum Yang–Mills theory, Gibbs measures of nonlinear Schrödinger equations, interfaces in spectral asymptotics and nodal sets. Contributions in this Work are composed by experts from the international community, who have presented the state-of-the-art research in the corresponding problems treated. This volume is expected to be a valuable resource to both graduate students and research mathematicians working in analysis, probability as well as their interconnections and applications.

Book excerpt: In 1989, Edward Witten discovered a deep relationship between quantum field theory and knot theory, and this beautiful discovery created a new field of research called Chern-Simons theory. This field has the remarkable feature of intertwining a large number of diverse branches of research in mathematics and physics, among them low-dimensional topology, differential geometry, quantum algebra, functional and stochastic analysis, quantum gravity, and string theory. The 20-year anniversary of Witten's discovery provided an opportunity to bring together researchers working in Chern-Simons theory for a meeting, and the resulting conference, which took place during the summer of 2009 at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn, included many of the leading experts in the field. This volume documents the activities of the conference and presents several original research articles, including another monumental paper by Witten that is sure to stimulate further activity in this and related fields. This collection will provide an excellent overview of the current research directions and recent progress in Chern-Simons gauge theory.

Book excerpt: Stochastic Integrals discusses one area of diffusion processes: the differential and integral calculus based upon the Brownian motion. The book reviews Gaussian families, construction of the Brownian motion, the simplest properties of the Brownian motion, Martingale inequality, and the law of the iterated logarithm. It also discusses the definition of the stochastic integral by Wiener and by Ito, the simplest properties of the stochastic integral according to Ito, and the solution of the simplest stochastic differential equation. The book explains diffusion, Lamperti's method, forward equation, Feller's test for the explosions, Cameron-Martin's formula, the Brownian local time, and the solution of dx=e(x) db + f(x) dt for coefficients with bounded slope. It also tackles Weyl's lemma, diffusions on a manifold, Hasminski's test for explosions, covering Brownian motions, Brownian motions on a Lie group, and Brownian motion of symmetric matrices. The book gives as example of a diffusion on a manifold with boundary the Brownian motion with oblique reflection on the closed unit disk of R squared. The text is suitable for economists, scientists, or researchers involved in probabilistic models and applied mathematics.
