Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians usually look for the origins of American political culture among English-speaking people and British constitutional and legal sources. Yet German immigrants to the colonies also contributed to - and developed for themselves - an American political consciousness. In Palatines, Liberty, and Property A.G. Roeber focuses on this neglected subject and explains why so many Germans, when they faced critical choices in 1776, became active supporters of the patriot cause. Employing a variety of German-language sources, Roeber explores German conceptions of personal and public property in the context of cultural and religious beliefs, village life, and family concerns. He follows all the major German migration streams, beginning with the Palatines in New York and including Germans who settled in Pennsylvania, Virginia, South Carolina, and Georgia. Roeber's study of German-American ideas about liberty and property provides a unique perspective within a growing historiography on the transfer of culture and beliefs from Europe and Africa to America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transition from the Soviet to the post–1991 Russian military is a fascinating story of decline and reinvention. The Soviet army suffered a slow demise, dissolving in 2000 and only gradually reforming based on radically different principles. The First Chechnya War (1994–1996) was the lowest point for the Soviet military but the Second Chechnya War (1999–2004) saw the initial stirrings of the new Russian army. The Five Day War with Georgia in August 2008 was its first major success and marked Russia’s return to world power status. Lively accounts and maps describe the actions of these wars, along with the Crimea operation of 2014, the separatist struggles in eastern Ukraine and the ongoing Russian intervention in Syria.

Book excerpt: A cheeky tale of campus folly! Things aren’t going well for James Duffy. The beleaguered communications director of Sir Richard Middling University is struggling to do the right thing while navigating the quirks and minefields of campus politics. The odds are against him and the challenges keep piling up: an ambitious polytechnical college is scheming to take over Sir Middling U; a furore erupts over a bigoted guest speaker; and activists want to tear down a statue of the university’s controversial namesake. While striving to defuse the various crises, Duffy encounters a cast of eccentric characters: a scholarly burlesque queen; an author of dreadful poetry; a hobby-horse-riding free-speech advocate; and a diaper-wearing basset hound. As things go from bad to worse, Duffy's flagging spirits are lifted—and his moral compass righted—by the girl of his dreams, the wise and loyal Sophie Munn.

Book excerpt: Marc Vitrac was born in Louisiana in the early 1960's, about the time the first interplanetary probes delivered the news that Mars and Venus were teeming with life—even human life. At that point, the "Space Race" became the central preoccupation of the great powers of the world. Now, in 1988, Marc has been assigned to Jamestown, the US-Commonwealth base on Venus, near the great Venusian city of Kartahown. Set in a countryside swarming with sabertooths and dinosaurs, Jamestown is home to a small band of American and allied scientist-adventurers. But there are flies in this ointment – and not only the Venusian dragonflies, with their yard-wide wings. The biologists studying Venus's life are puzzled by the way it not only resembles that on Earth, but is virtually identical to it. The EastBloc has its own base at Cosmograd, in the highlands to the south, and relations are frosty. And attractive young geologist Cynthia Whitlock seems impervious to Marc's Cajun charm. Meanwhile, at the western end of the continent, Teesa of the Cloud Mountain People leads her tribe in a conflict with the Neanderthal-like beastmen who have seized her folk's sacred caves. Then an EastBloc shuttle crashes nearby, and the beastmen acquire new knowledge... and AK47's. Jamestown sends its long-range blimp to rescue the downed EastBloc cosmonauts, little suspecting that the answer to the jungle planet's mysteries may lie there, among tribal conflicts and traces of a power that made Earth's vaunted science seem as primitive as the tribesfolk's blowguns. As if that weren't enough, there's an enemy agent on board the airship... Extravagant and effervescent, The Sky People is alternate-history SF adventure at its best. Book excerpt: Dealing with the everyday difficulty of living in a post war world is easier since the Event seven years ago when Terra and an army of friends and warriors traveled across the war-torn ruins of Earth where she stormed the gates of heaven to dethrone the imposter and recover the child. The thankful deity closed the portals used by the aliens and destroyed the giant ships responsible for releasing a plague of genetically altered dinosaurs to replace humans. She is deeply in love with Wolf, who rode at her side. Together they have helped build Phoenix, a compound offering security to her extended family and any seeking shelter. The removal of genetic barriers between humans, ‘saurians and angel has produced a race bearing both telekinetic and other talents. Since the Event the attacks by the ‘saurs and alien Hunter ships are few but a resurgence of genetically mutated saurians has everyone on guard. The evidence leads them to one of the giant mother ships and the emergence of one of mankind’s ancient godheads and a self-proclaimed priest and sorcerer that is causing widespread panic. Terra’s mission is to stop this sorcerer but this is a difficult time for her. Unable to conceive a child by Wolf, the only man she has ever loved, she is left behind in the compound when he storms off after a big fight. Feeling alone and desperate, she becomes prey to the stranger that has arrived in Wolf’s absence. Heartbroken, she fears that her and Wolf’s high percentage of Angel blood is the source of their discord. Her despondent mood has drawn this stranger’s attention.

This book was released on with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The widespread application of brain imaging to the study of psychiatric disorders has led to a revolution in our understanding of the neural basis of psychiatric illness. In particular, the advent of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has provided an unprecedented capacity for quantifying diverse aspects of brain structure and function in vivo, and has been used to identify brain changes associated with the full spectrum of psychopathology. With respect to major psychiatric disorders, it is now abundantly clear from this literature that focal brain dysfunction is rare. Rather, most disorders are associated with abnormalities in large-scale networks of spatially distributed and interconnected brain regions; i.e., they are disorders of brain connectivity. Such considerations highlight the need to understand brain dysfunction in psychiatric illness from a network-based perspective. This goal is starting to be realized through recent advances in the use of MRI to map the brain’s complex connectivity architecture. In this special edition, we invite contributions that address brain network dysfunction in psychiatric illnesses. Specifically, the work must be concerned with understanding interactions between brain regions, and how their alterations are affected by psychiatric disease. These interactions can be studied at the level of anatomy using diffusion-MRI or function using functional MRI (fMRI), with the full range of methods available (e.g., tractography, seed-based correlations, independent component analysis, graph analysis, dynamic causal modeling, etc.). Contributions can be either reviews of recent, relevant literature addressing brain network dysfunction in psychiatric disease, or experimental papers describing novel insights into brain network disturbances in such illnesses. Contributions will be invited covering a broad spectrum of psychiatric disease, including mood and anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, autism, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and neurodegenerative conditions. It is intended that this volume will provide important insights into how brain networks are perturbed by psychiatric disease, and allow identification of commonalities and differences across diagnostic categories.
