Download or read book Fair Pay written by David Buckmaster and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2021-06-29 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Longlisted for the 2021 Porchlight Business Book Awards, Management & Workplace Culture An expert takes on the crisis of income inequality, addressing the problems with our current compensation model, demystifying pay practices, and providing practical information employees can use when negotiating their salaries and discussing how we can close the gender and racial pay gap. American workers are suffering economically and fewer are earning a living wage. The situation is only worsening. We do not have a common language to talk about pay, how it works at most companies, or a cohesive set of practical solutions for making pay more fair. Most blame the greed of America’s executive class, the ineptitude of government, or a general lack of personal motivation. But the negative effects of income inequality are a problem that can be solved. We don’t have to choose between effective government policy and the free market, between the working class and the job creators, or between socialism and capitalism, David Buckmaster, the Director of Global Compensation for Nike, argues. We do not have to give up on fixing what people are paid. Ideas like Universal Basic Income will not be enough to avoid the severe cultural disruption coming our way. Buckmaster examines income inequality through the design and distribution of income itself. He explains why businesses are producing no meaningful wage growth, regardless of the unemployment rate and despite sitting on record piles of cash and the lowest tax rates[0] in a generation . He pulls back the curtain on how corporations make decisions about wages and provides practical solutions—as well as the corporate language—workers need to get the best results when talking about money with a boss. The way pay works now will not overcome our most persistent pay challenges, including low and stagnant wages, unequal pay by race and gender, and executive pay levels untethered from the realities of the average worker. The compensation system is working as designed, but that system is broken. Fair Pay opens the corporate black box of pay decisions to show why businesses pay what they pay and how to make them pay more.

Book Synopsis Non-native English-speaking Engineers’ Writing at the Workplace by : Juan Du
Download or read book Non-native English-speaking Engineers’ Writing at the Workplace written by Juan Du and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-12-10 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on 55 semi-structured in-depth interviews, this book investigates 15 high-tech engineering co-op professionals’ writing experience in the workplace. It shows how the digital age has had a marked impact on the engineers’ methods of communication at work, and how on-the -job writing has affected engineers’ technical competence, shaped their professional identities, challenged their views on Chinese and English writing, and hindered their success in the workplace. The book identifies three aspects of writing practice: engineers’ linguistic and literacy challenges, the reasons behind these challenges, and coping strategies, which suggest that engineers are underprepared and lack necessary support in the workplace. Lastly, the study shows that engineers need to engage in technical literacy through on-the-job writing so that they can fully deal with workplace discourse and socialize with diverse professional groups. Since the sample group interviewed in this book is engineers who studied at universities in the United States and have a foot in the world of school and work as well as knowledge of both Eastern and Western cultures, the book appeals to teachers, students, engineers and scientists who are interested in scientific and technological writing. It is also valuable for educators who prepare scientists, engineers, and technical communicators for professional roles, as well as for communication practitioners who work with engineers. /div

Book Synopsis Writing Workplace Cultures by : Jim Henry
Download or read book Writing Workplace Cultures written by Jim Henry and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Writing Workplace Cultures: An Archaeology of Professional Writing, Jim Henry analyzes eighty-three workplace writing ethnographies composed over seven years in a variety of organizations. He views the findings as so many shards in an archaeology on professional writing at the beginning of the twenty-first century. These ethnographies were composed by either practicing or aspiring writers participating in a Master’s program in professional writing and editing. Henry solicited the writers' participation in "informed intersubjective research" focused on issues and questions of their own determination. Most writers studied their own workplace, composing "auto-ethnographies" that problematize these workplaces' local cultures even as they depict writing practices within them. Henry establishes links between current professional writing practices and composition instruction as both were shaped by national economic development and local postsecondary reorganization throughout the twentieth century. He insists that if we accept basic principles of social constructionism, the text demonstrates ways in which writers "write" workplace cultures to produce goods and services whose effects go far beyond the immediate needs of its clients.
Book Synopsis The Write Direction by : Fred S. Wolff
Download or read book The Write Direction written by Fred S. Wolff and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Write Direction is an innovative book that guides teachers on how to teach writing, including the connection to the writing students will encounter once they leave school. The book examines the importance of teacher as writer, classroom environment, writing process, and six traits of writing and how teachers can implement these concepts. The Write Direction connects classroom writing instruction to the world students will face once they leave school and enter the workplace. The authors believe that students need to explore and practice writing assignments that better prepare them for the writing they will undertake once they leave school. Unfortunately, many teachers do not know what types of writing employers in the business world expect their employees to be able to produce. Therefore, every chapter provides specific activities for teachers to undertake as they work to improve their writing instruction. Suggestions for incorporating appropriate writing assignments that connect to workplace writing are also included. The book also provides suggestions for managing the crucial issues facing new teachers in today's classroom: testing, grading, and long-range planning.
