Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the near future, many parts of the world will suffer from a shortage of freshwater. Effective use of seawater in concrete production could therefore become a crucial technology. Seawater in Concrete Mix provides a detailed overview of the fundamental knowledge of concrete engineering that is essential for the usage of seawater-mixed concrete. According to the worldwide standard for reinforced concrete (RC), freshwater is typically used in concrete mixing rather than seawater. Yet a potential exists for the extensive use of seawater in concrete, especially with the addition of ground granulated blast-furnace slag, fly ash, or other mineral admixtures. The recent trend toward performance-based design makes this alternative more viable. The text is ideal for graduate students, researchers, concrete engineers, and all civil engineers who deal with concrete for infrastructure. Hidenori Hamada is Professor of Kyushu University, Japan. Nobuaki Otsuki is Professor Emeritus of Tokyo Institute of Technology and was Chairman of the JCI Technical Committee on the use of seawater in concrete. Takahiro Nishida is Senior Researcher of the Japanese National Institute of Maritime, Port and Aviation Technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concrete has clearly emerged as the most economical and durable material for the building of the vast majority of marine structures. Reinforced concrete too has overcome the technological problems making it a suitable material for the construction of advanced marine structures such as offshore drilling platforms, superspan bridges and undersea tunnels. As the world becomes increasingly ocean-oriented for energy and other resources it is predicted that construction activities during the 21st century will be dominated by concrete sea structures. The performance of concrete in the marine environment is presented here in a logical manner giving state-of-the-art reviews of the nature of the marine environment, the composition and properties of concrete, history of concrete performance in seawater, major causes of deterioration of concrete in the marine environment, selection of materials and mix proportioning for durable concrete, recommended concrete practice and repair of deteriorated marine structures. It is of value to any design or construction engineer responsible for marine structures.

Book excerpt: This book presents an in-depth approach to concrete ingredients and their relationships to concrete by discussing their properties, pertinent test methods, specifications, proper use and selection, and solutions to problems in practice. The approach is practice oriented, and the book assists in the improved application of concrete through a thorough understanding of its ingredients. This is aided by the discussion of certain fundamental aspects and relationships in quantitative forms, and by also presenting the interpretation of research and experience. An extensive bibliography is included. The book is a current, organized summary of knowledge concerning concrete-making materials, which will enable the engineer/user to make the best possible product using these materials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Core specimens were obtained from six concrete blocks submerged partly or totally in seawater for 67-years off the Los Angeles Harbor breakwater. The compressive strengths of the concrete were compared with strengths of 40 years earlier. It was found that two blocks increased in strength, three remained the same and one decreased. The blocks still showed fairly sharp edges and original form marks. Rock boring mollusks were found on the surface of the blocks but they did not damage the concrete. (Author).
