But Crawford was a multifaceted artist with a curiosity for the world beyond the United States, one whose work in various media continued to evolve, with his later, more abstract painting having a remarkable emotional dimension. This new book focuses on two series of works "Torn Signs" and "Semana Santa" that Crawford developed mostly over the course of the last 20 or so years of his life. Rick Kinsel considers how and why his travels to Europe, especially to Andalusia in Spain, were so inspiring to Crawford. Semana Santa, or Holy Week, is observed in Seville with public processions of penitential confraternities. Witnessing this event proved to be a moving experience for Crawford, and he revisited the subject of the penitents multiple times across a number of years.

The familiar story of America in the 'roaring Twenties' is that of 'The Great Gatsby', the Harlem Renaissance, and the Machine Age; while the 1930s are known as the Steinbeckian world marked by the Depression and the New Deal. This exhibition focuses on the artists who grappled with the experience of modern America with a cool, controlled detachment, almost completely eliminating people from their pictures. For some artists this treatment reflected an ambivalence and anxiety about the modern world. Factories without workers and streets without people. Factories without workers and streets without people could seem strange and empty places. George Ault (1891-1948) and Niles Spencer (1893-1952) painted eerie factories with darkened windows. Their precise, orderly painting style adds to the unsettling atmosphere of their work. In 'Manhattan Bridge Loop' (1928), Edward Hopper (1882-1967) captured the stilled, quiet mood of the city, including a solitary pedestrian. For others, this cool treatment of contemporary America was a positive more response - an expression of optimism and pride. Skyscrapers and bridges become studies in geometry; and cities are cleansed and ordered with no crowds and no chaos. Louis Lozowick's (1892-1973) prints capture the energy of the city in curving sprawls and buildings soaring into the sky; while Ralston Crawford (1906-78) and Charles Sheeler (1883-1965) depicted the architecture of industrial America - factories, grain elevators, water plants - as the country's new cathedrals, glorious in their scale and feats of engineering, yet oddly emptied of people. The detached, frozen appearance of the scenes creates an uncertain or ambiguous atmosphere.

Book excerpt: A representative collection of avant-garde American painting from the 1930s and '40s Conceived and funded by the State Department in 1946 as part of a new emphasis in international diplomacy, the exhibit of paintings called Advancing American Art was launched on what was enthusiastically projected as an extended goodwill tour of Europe and Latin America. But almost immediately the exhibit was attacked by conservative groups as "un-American" and "subversive" and its abstract paintings ridiculed in the national media, in Congress, and by no less a critic than President Truman. Following their recall by Secretary Marshall in 1947, the exhibit's paintings were quietly declared surplus property and sold under rather curious circumstances by the War Assets Administration. Most of the collection was acquired by a small number of public universities in what could be called the art bargain of the century, since works by such figures as Marin, O'Keefe, Shahn, Dove, Kuniyoshi, and Hartley were sold for $100 or less. The chronicle of this exhibit tells us something about America after the war, when the nation sought to reconcile its sacrificial experiences from the Depression and in World War II with its new role on the international scene.
