Download or read book Word by Word written by Kory Stamper and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “We think of English as a fortress to be defended, but a better analogy is to think of English as a child. We love and nurture it into being, and once it gains gross motor skills, it starts going exactly where we don’t want it to go: it heads right for the goddamned electrical sockets.” With wit and irreverence, lexicographer Kory Stamper cracks open the obsessive world of dictionary writing, from the agonizing decisions about what to define and how to do it to the knotty questions of ever-changing word usage. Filled with fun facts—for example, the first documented usage of “OMG” was in a letter to Winston Churchill—and Stamper’s own stories from the linguistic front lines (including how she became America’s foremost “irregardless” apologist, despite loathing the word), Word by Word is an endlessly entertaining look at the wonderful complexities and eccentricities of the English language.

Book Synopsis On the Definition of Word by : Anne-Marie Di Sciullo
Download or read book On the Definition of Word written by Anne-Marie Di Sciullo and published by MIT Press (MA). This book was released on 1987-01 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On The Definition of Word develops a consistent and coherent approach to central questions about morphology and its relation to syntax. In sorting out the various senses in which the word word is used, it asserts that three concepts which have often been identified with each other are in fact distinct and not coextensive: listemes (linguistic objects permanently stored by the speaker); morphological objects (objects whose shape can be characterized in morphological terms of affixation and compounding); and syntactic atoms (objects that are unanalyzable units with respect to syntax). The first chapter defends the idea that listemes are distinct from the other two notions, and that all one can and should say about them is that they exist. A theory of morphological objects is developed in chapter two. Chapter three defends the claim that the morphological objects are a proper subset of the syntactic atoms, presenting the authors' reconstruction of the important and much-debated Lexical Integrity Hypothesis. A final chapter shows that there are syntactic atoms which are not morphological objects. Anne Marie Di Sciullo is in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Quebec. Edwin Williams is in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Massachusetts. On The Definition of Word is Linguistic Inquiry Monograph 14.

Book Synopsis Searchlights from the Word by : G. Campbell Morgan
Download or read book Searchlights from the Word written by G. Campbell Morgan and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1188 sermon suggestions -- One from every chapter in the Bible. Morgan's expositions sparkle as they enhance Bible texts from every chapter in the Bible. Concise and delightfully free of redundancy, these selections reveal the master expositor's keen, analytical insight into God's Word. To encourage preachers and Bible teachers to develop their own sermon and lesson themes creatively, the author mentions that these are sermon suggestions -- not sermons or sermon outlines. He intentionally left the notes untitled, "preferring to let the text of Scripture be their only caption." These penetrating truths, firmly anchored in Scripture, are best described by G. Campbell Morgan himself: On every page of...the "God-breathed Writings" there are many thoughts which stretch out like long, clear arms of light across the darkness, discovering things which otherwise were hidden, and often illuminating wider areas than those of the immediate context. They are searchlights. From the multitude of these, I have selected one in each chapter of the Bible. Perhaps the work will also serve to illustrate a method of showing how focal points of radiating light gather their radiance from the context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Gods mouth to the hearts of his people - this is the function of the Bible and is the reason it is called the Word of God. The Bible applied to the heart by the Holy Spirit is the chief means by which men are built up and established in the faith, after their conversion. It is able to cleanse them, sanctify them, to instruct them in righteousness, and to furnish them thoroughly for all good works (2 Tim. 3:1617) (J. C. Ryle. After many years of anger against God, the author was wonderfully restored by the Lord to himself and laid the burden of this ministry on his heart. Every week for the past fourteen years, TFTWs (Thoughts from the Word) have been sent via the Internet to Gods people throughout the world. Book Synopsis You Have Victory in the Word by : Rufus McDowell, D. Min.
Download or read book You Have Victory in the Word written by Rufus McDowell, D. Min. and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-02-22 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ" (1 Corinthians 15:57). The call and urgency for people to accept Jesus Christ as Lord is paramount for a victorious and abundant lifestyle. This book is designed to provide you with information that will be helpful and insightful in your intimacy and walk with Christ. From my own encounters through adversities, I have realized that it is utmost meaningful and significant to study the Bible and apply its truths in every situation and circumstance regarding mundane events of daily life. During my Christian journey, I grasped how much believers need an example and ministerial help when undergoing trials and difficulty. Resultant from years of conducting pastoral ministry and counseling others, I determined that many do not know the Word of God nor the promises that are available to them. Thus, I began to preach and teach "You Have Victory in the Word." The Spirit gave me revelation that all of life's issues are addressed in the Bible. Simply put, I discovered that the Holy Spirit is not constricted to the pages of scriptures, but He wants to provide every believer with principles that will aid them to be successful in spite of the storms of life. This book will help you navigate the torrential and hammering degrees of life's challenging moments. Finally, the Bible describes in clear and unmistakable language how we should react to the Word of God in all its different forms. We must eagerly hear God's Word and let it be our joy and delight. We must accept what the Word of God says, hide it deep within our hearts, trust in it, and put our hope in its promises.

Terry Brooks is one of a handful of fantasy writers whose work consistently meets the highest literary standards.”—Rocky Mountain News Eight centuries ago the first Knight of the Word was commissioned to combat the demonic evil of the Void. Now that daunting legacy has passed to John Ross—along with powerful magic and the knowledge that his actions are all that stand between a living hell and humanity's future. Then, after decades of service to the Word, an unspeakable act of violence shatters John Ross's weary faith. Haunted by guilt, he turns his back on his dread gift, settling down to build a normal life, untroubled by demons and nightmares. But a fallen Knight makes a tempting prize for the Void, which could bend the Knight's magic to its own evil ends. And once the demons on Ross's trail track him to Seattle, neither he nor anyone close to him will be safe. His only hope is Nest Freemark, a college student who wields an extraordinary magic all her own. Five years earlier, Ross had aided Nest when the future of humanity rested upon her choice between Word and Void. Now Nest must return the favor. She must restore Ross's faith, or his life—and hers—will be forfeit . . . “[An] urban dark fantasy . . . Sharp and satisfying.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)
Book Synopsis Correctly Handling the Word of Truth by : Mees te Velde
Download or read book Correctly Handling the Word of Truth written by Mees te Velde and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-10-24 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How should the Word of God be interpreted and applied today? Does our modern culture affect how we read the Bible? Can certain passages be interpreted in different contexts and in different ways, all the while acknowledging that God speaks with a clear and consistent voice? These are the enduring challenges of hermeneutics. In this volume, no less than sixteen Reformed scholars from four different countries join together to tackle the hard questions that often arise when we busy ourselves with the weighty responsibility of interpreting Holy Scripture. As iron sharpens iron, so also these Reformed scholars challenge each other and their readers to ask not only how hermeneutics can be done, but ultimately, how it should be done so that God's Word of Truth may be handled correctly (2 Tim 2:15).
Book Synopsis Fire of Mercy, Heart of the Word, Vol 2 by : Erasmo Leiva-Merikakis
Download or read book Fire of Mercy, Heart of the Word, Vol 2 written by Erasmo Leiva-Merikakis and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To the unstudied eye, St. Matthew's gospel can seem a terse narrative, almost a historical document and not the tremendously spiritual (and doctrinal) storehouse that it is. In his third volume of meditations on Matthew (chapters 19-25), Erasmo Leiva continues to show Matthew's prose to be not terse so much as economical--astoundingly so given its depth. The lay reader can derive great profit from reading this. Each short meditation comments on a verse or two, pointing to some facet of the text not immediately apparent, but rich with meaning. Leiva's work is scholarly but eminently approachable by the lay reader. The tone is very much of "taste and see how good the Lord is" and an invitation of "friend, come up higher!." The goal of the book is to help the reader experience the heat of the divine heart and the light of the divine Word. Leiva comments on the Greek text, demonstrating nuances in the text that defy translation. He uses numerous quotes from the Fathers and the Liturgy of the Church to demonstrate the way the Tradition has lived and read the Word of God. His theological reflection vivifies doctrine by seeking its roots in the words and actions of Jesus.
Book Synopsis IS THE QURAN THE WORD OF GOD? by : Edward D. Andrews
Download or read book IS THE QURAN THE WORD OF GOD? written by Edward D. Andrews and published by Christian Publishing House. This book was released on 2017-06-27 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IS THE QURAN THE WORD OF GOD? Is Islam the One True Faith? This book covers the worldview, practices, and history of Islam and the Quran. This book is designed as an apologetic evangelistic tool for Christians, as they come across Muslims in their daily lives, as well as to inform them, as a protection again the misleading media. The non-Muslims need to hear these truths about Islam and the Quran so they can have an accurate understanding of the Muslim mindset that leads to their actions. Islam is the second largest religion in the world. Radical Islam has taken the world by storm, and the “fake media” has genuinely misled their audience for the sake of political correctness. This book is not a dogmatic attack on Islam and the Quran but rather an uncovering of the lies and describing of the truths. The reader will be introduced to the most helpful way of viewing the evidence objectively. We will answer the question of whether the Quran is a literary miracle, as well as is there evidence that the Quran is inspired by God, along with is the Quran harmonious and consistent, and is the Quran from God or man? We will also examine Islamic teachings, discuss the need to search for the truth, as well as identify the book of truth. We will look at how Islam views the Bible. Finally, we will take up the subjects of Shariah Law, the rise of radical Islam, Islamic eschatology, and how to effectively witness to Muslims.
