Book excerpt: A weekday devotional to help Christians connect the gospel to their vocation and appreciate the eternal significance of their work—no matter what it is—from the entrepreneur, thought leader, and bestselling author of Redeeming Your Time. Perhaps you feel as if the work you do carries less eternal impact than the work of a pastor or missionary. But that’s not how God sees it. Whatever it looks like day to day, your work is ministry and central to God’s plans to restore fallen creation. As the days of creation reveal, God is quite familiar with work himself. He created humans with unique giftings and interests, specifically so we can pursue his redemptive work in partnership with him. The Word Before Work features 260 readings—one for every workday of the year—to help you see how your work connects to God’s work in the world. The first four weeks set the foundation by exploring: • what work means in light of the biblical narrative • why our work matters • five ways these truths inform how we should work today The rest of this one-year devotional takes you on a journey through Scripture to explore God’s perspective on the work he has called you to do. Whether you’re an entrepreneur, barista, stay-at-home parent, CEO, or coach, The Word Before Work affirms how God created you for work, why it matters, and the ways it holds significance both now and for eternity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Word, Work and the World begins with the assumption that people are interested in the world around them. The book is written with the intent of drawing in lay and specialised readers into the interdisciplinary world of Sociology/Social Anthropology. The methods of both, since the 1960s, has been seen as combined for the reasons that the dichotomy of tribal/ peasant in relation to urban conglomerations is thought to be immensely interesting to the reading public. Migration for work is so significant, whether within the country or outside, that the dilemmas and concerns of the diaspora are always interesting data. Put simply, the book tries to bring forward the living practices of communities which are interlocked in time and space, where work and their cultures become intermeshed in different ways. Of course cyberspace becomes the common denominator in understanding that people are interested in one another, families and friends become interactive over spans of time which allow a certain intimacy of acknowledgement. Economic practices are also embedded in the hinterland of communication. As the world becomes increasingly vulnerable to climate change, organic farming, the search for water, the protection of lands and people from floods, are all real indexes of how urgent the task of recording people's life worlds has become. Narrative production, and its interpretation draws us into the complexities of the ethnographic present, which as a type of documentation provides resource materials to historians. Since the world is now so encompassable, the book explores how human being remember the past, while creating new niches for the survival of their families and communities. Hybridization of cultures also involves familiarity with world literature, because people enjoy the expanse of imagination into which they are released by reading time honoured texts, whether of the ancient past, or of contemporary time. The time of legend, of fable, of coercive patterns of existence arising out of natural or political calamities, makes them ever more respectful of traditions and the hope for survival. Out of war and loss arise both science and poetry, not necessarily opposed to one another. This book tries to bring to the reader the pleasures of many cultures in conversation with one another, where dissonances may be accommodated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The crucial challenge for theology is that when it is read the reader thinks, "This is true." Recognizing claims that are "true" enables readers to identify an honest expression of life's complexities. The trick is to show that theological claims--the words that must be used to speak of God--are necessary if the theologian is to speak honestly of the complexities of life. The worst betrayal of the task of theology comes when the theologian fears that the words he or she must use are not necessary. This new collection of essays, lectures, and sermons by Stanley Hauerwas is focused on the central challenge, risk, and difficulty of this necessity--working with words about God. The task of theology is to help us do things with words. "God" is not a word peculiar to theology, but if "God" is a word to be properly used by Christians, the word must be disciplined by Christian practice. It should, therefore, not be surprising that, like any word, we must learn how to say "God."

It may sound seemingly unrealistic, but if any part of the body of Christ speaks with His authority...

Book excerpt: Too many parents, and teachers for that matter, struggle to get their requests heard, understood and taken seriously – kids just don’t seem to be able to do as they’re told nowadays. In Words that Work: How to Get Kids to Do Almost Anything, author Alicia Eaton, a leading Harley Street Hypnotherapist & Advanced NLP Practitioner, explains how much easier it is to get children to co-operate, simply by changing the vocabulary and structure of your sentences. She shows how powerful words are if you know about the NLP ‘language of persuasion and influence’. And also shares the secret to slipping ‘hypnotic influence’ into day-to-day conversations. Originally a Montessori teacher and a mother to three, now grown-up children, Alicia’s combined all her skills, knowledge and expert training to create this unique parenting system that really works. So whether the issue is mealtime arguments over fussy eating or junk food cravings; an anxiety or phobia about dogs, spiders, going to school or exams; a lack of confidence; bad habits such as nail-biting, thumbsucking or bedwetting, you’ll quickly learn what to say and what not to say. You’ll be able to put an end to the nagging and yelling that gets you nowhere and wears you out; reward systems and star charts that quickly lose their appeal; bribery and punishments that achieve nothing and make everyone feel bad. Parents who appear to have well-behaved, happy, high achieving kids are not just plain ‘lucky’ - quite simply, they’re handling things differently and with a bit of inside knowledge, you can too.

Ever fallen asleep during a bullet-point presentation? Ever watched the news and ended up knowing less? Welcome to the land of Blah, Blah, Blah, in which talk and words prevent us from thinking. As powerful as words are, we fool ourselves when we think our words alone can detect, describe and defuse the multifaceted problems of today. This book offers a way out of Blah, Blah, Blah. It’s called “Vivid Thinking”, which combines our verbal and visual minds so that we can think and learn more quickly, teach and inspire our colleagues, and enjoy and share ideas in a new and more effective way. Through Vivid Thinking, we can make the most complicated subjects suddenly crystal clear – something which is proving increasingly valuable in this complex world of ours
