Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Heritage List was created in January 2004 to recognise, celebrate and protect places of outstanding heritage value to the nation. National heritage encompasses those places that reveal the richness of Australia's extraordinarily diverse natural, historic and Indigenous heritage. One aspect of natural heritage that has been little explored is Australia’s wealth of exceptional fossil sites. While a small number of fossil sites have risen to public prominence, there are many lesser-known sites that have important heritage values. The Australian Heritage Council engaged palaeontologists from state museums and the Northern Territory Museum and Art Gallery to compile lists of outstanding fossil sites and to document their characteristics and relative importance against a range of categories, with a view to further our understanding about Australia’s important fossil heritage. Sites that were listed for National or World Heritage values were not included in the places for consideration, with the focus being on lesser-known but still important sites. This book is an account of the palaeontologists’ findings. Some of the sites that were included in the initial lists have since been recognised through listing on the National Heritage List or the World Heritage List. Australia's Fossil Heritage provides a useful reference to the outstanding fossil sites it catalogues, and gives a clearer understanding of the heritage values of such sites. More generally, it contributes to a greater appreciation of Australia’s geological and fossil diversity and enables readers to learn more about Australia's prehistory.

Book excerpt: Ninety-five million years ago, in what is now Central West Queensland, hundreds of small dinosaurscongregated by the edge of a lake. All of a sudden, they were interrupted by a large, meat-eating theropod dinosaur. With the lake blocking their escape, the panicking small dinosaurs ran madlyaway from the lake, past the theropod, and up a drainage channel to safety. We know that this amazing chain of events happened95 million years ago thanks to an amazing fossil site 110km south of the town of Winton. No dinosaur bones are preserved there, but fossil footprints are:more than 3,000 in all. These fossil footprints capture an amazing prehistoric moment in stone: a dinosaurstampede. Now fittingly known as Dinosaur Stampede National Monument at Lark Quarry Conservation Park, this remarkable fossil site is of international significance. It is the only dinosaur stampede everfound anywhere in the world. Come and explore the discovery, excavation, interpretation, andconservation of this wondrous fossil site, and step back in time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Queensland, in northeast Australia, lies one of the most significant fossil deposits in the world—Riversleigh. Here, the remains of many thousands of weird and wonderful prehistoric animals have been superbly preserved in the limestone outcrops. There are marsupial lions, carnivorous kangaroos, 23-foot long pythons, primitive platypuses, and early ancestors of the now extinct Tasmanian tiger. So important is this site to our understanding of what has happened to Australia and its living cargo over the last 25 million years that Riversleigh has been inscribed on the World Heritage List. Michael Archer, Suzanne J. Hand, and Henk Godthelp, the principal scientists on a remarkable excavation since 1976, explain the vast environmental and geographic changes that have occurred in this area since Australia broke away from the supercontinent of Gondwana, and how the animals on board this continental raft evolved through the ages. Photographs and evocative artwork bring to life the teeming tropical world that once existed in the now arid wastes of Riversleigh, and the authors discuss some of the unusual techniques used on a dig. They describe how to recognize fossils, how to date them, and how to reconstruct extinct animals from them. Originally published as Riversleigh: The Story of Animals in Ancient Rainforests of Inland Australia, this award-winning book is being issued for the first time in the United States.

Book excerpt: Become a dinosaur expert with this beautiful coffee-table book that features breathtaking paleoart paired with the author’s research and expert insights. Dinosaurs have filled us with wonder, amazement, and excitement for thousands of years. Ever since the first monstrous bones were pulled from the earth, we’ve constructed myths and legends and stories to explain them. These creatures were first dubbed “terrible lizards,” but in recent years, science has made remarkable strides, analyzing dinosaurs to gain a better understanding of how they functioned. No amount of research can tell us how dinosaurs behaved or how they interacted with their environments or with the other animals in their ecosystems. For that, we need our imaginations. The Amazing World of Dinosaurs is a guided tour of the Age of Reptiles. James Kuether’s breathtaking, incredibly lifelike paleoart conveys the power and majesty of these animals, while his fascinating text guides us through the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods with the latest information in dinosaur science. Get to know familiar favorites, such as Tyrannosaurus and Stegosaurus, as well as wild new finds like Dracoraptor, Cryolophosaurus, and Medusaceratops. Book Features: Gorgeous paleoart—digital reconstructions of extinct animals Chronological information, from early life to the K-Pg Extinction Introductions to more than 150 species of dinosaurs and non-dinosaurs For over 150 years, dinosaurs and the other prehistoric creatures have sparked the imaginations of children and adults everywhere. The Amazing World of Dinosaurs is the book that dinosaur lovers of all ages—from armchair paleontologists to experts—will want on their coffee table or bookshelf.
